Shortly after my fourth birthday, my parents and I arrived from China in Sydney, Australia. It was 1991 and my mother had left behind everything she knew- family, friends and career.

Yet within two years, my parents3 marriage had broken down. After one particularly unpleasant fight, my mother left my father, taking me with her. With no family or friends, and in a country where she couldn't even communicate with people, she took me to Chinatown, the only area of Sydney she was familiar with. That night she laid me on a bench in Dixon Street, packing suitcases around us for security (安全) I will never forget the despair in her face at that time.

At around 4 am, a group of four young Chinese men noisily exited a club nearby. I remember them falling silent as they saw us. They approached and asked my mother why she was sleeping on the street with such a young child. My mother burst into tears as she told them our story-Without hesitating, they warmed me up, took our suitcases, and drove us to their studentshousing.

In the weeks that followed, the men looked after us with a youthful enthusiasm. Being poor

students living on their own for the first time, they simply knew how to cook in a stupid way.

However, they insisted that a child should have homemade meals. They quickly adjusted their

lives around us, buying fresh food, cooking, teasing me to make me laugh, and advising my

mother on how to sort out her life.

Eventually, my mother reconciled (和解) with my father and we moved back in with him,

although they continued to split and make up several times.

Gradually we lost touch with the men as we all moved on. But at every milestone of my

Life-graduations, entering university, getting a good job- I never forget that all of this was made

possible because 22 years ago, a group of complete strangers took us in and shared everything

they had to save us from life on the street.

    4. Why did my mother and I stay in Dixon Street that night?

    A. We had no other place to go.

    B. It was safe to stay there for night.

    C. We were waiting for the Chinese men.

    D. Mom was unfamiliar with Australia at all.

    5. How did the students feel the moment they saw us in the street?

    A. Ashamed.  B. Shocked.   C. Amused.  D. Nervous.

    6. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

    A. The local police.

    B. The native people.

    C. The young Chinese students.

    D. The officials of the government.

    7. What message is conveyed in the passage?

    A. There is no perfect husband or wife in marriage.

    B. It's the timely help to someone in need that matters.

    C. It's a great challenge for the Chinese to study abroad.

    D. Childhood memory contributes to guiding present behavior.

    C

For years the Italian city of Venice has been struggling with a few concerns. Saint Mark's

Square is often flooded. Venice' s waterways require repairs. But, by far, the biggest problem is

the rapidly growing number of visitors to the city.

So city officials have decided to require all visitors to pay a fee to enter Venice. The money

will help to pay for cleaning and other services that help to keep the city beautiful.

Venice's Mayor Luigi Brugnaro explained the decision to international media during a visit to

Rome last week. “Venice is a wonder of the world and only in this way can it be saved," the mayor

said. “The fee process will be experimental at first," he added.

A one-day visit will cost about $7. City officials have yet to decide when the fee collection

will begin. The money will be collected by transport companies that bring the tourists to Venice.

The city will set up cameras for those arriving in private cars. And there will be fines for those

who do not pay the fee. Students, some workers and children under the age of six will not have to

pay. Naturally, anyone born or living in Venice is exempt.

City officials hope this will prevent the overcrowding that often comes with large numbers of

tourists. Some people living in Venice say they do not believe the fee plan will work. Lawyer

Roberta Pierabon says it will be impossible to collect the money from everyone who visits the city. Visitors arrive from all sides. She does not believe tourists can be controlled and added that she disapproved of the plan. Other Venetians like the idea. They say it will make tourism less

aggressive. Venetians love their city and know it will never stop appealing to visitors. Venice is so

special, they say, that it belongs to the whole of humanity.

    8. What is the biggest problem that arises in Venice?

    A. The visitor boom.

    B. The frequent flood.

    C. The poor city service.

    D. The waterway repair.

    9. How will city officials deal with the big problem?

    A. By educating citizens.

    B. By doing experiments.

    C. By charging fees.

    D. By turning to media.

    10. What does the underlined word “exempt" probably mean in Paragraph 4?

    A. Asked to stay.

    B. Permitted to settle.

    C. Required not to enter.

    D. Allowed not to pay.

    D

Australian adults want to seelife skills" introduced into school curriculums, including

money management, job preparation and domestic tasks. New research from Monash University

showed Aussie adults also widely supported the inclusion of technology, coding and artificial

intelligence subjects to student curriculums to prepare them for future jobs.

Co-author Professor Neil Selwyn, from Monash's new Education Futures, said the survey

results of more than 2,000 Australians had taken himself and Dr Deana Leahy by surprise. “The

life skills- -I wasn't expecting that at all," he said. Those quizzed were asked to rate the value of a

list of subjects already in the curriculum, but were also given an open space to write what they

think should be included. Professor Selwyn said people called for schools to teach financial skills,

budgeting, cooking and doing taxes. “You could argue that these are things people should be

learning themselves, or learning from their families," Professor Selwyn said “But we've got to be

thinking forward in terms of the skills people will need for jobs and their ways of living"

One respondent said schools should introduce a “contemporary life skills" subject: “A

compulsory l-hour a week class on skills needed that parents seem continually unable to teach

their kids." Suggestions for the class included resume writing, filing tax returns and health claims.

Another respondent called for students to be taught general life skills as unfortunately not enough

kids will have parents to actually be bothered to educate them or simply parents don't know

    themselves.

Of the subjects, maths was the highest ranked (75.5 percent), followed closely by English

(74.8 percent). And while science was the third highest ranked subject (46.2 percent), it was more

strongly supported by those who earned higher wages and were university educated compared to

    lower income earners.

Aspects of school life considered least important were students having fun, learning about

things that interested them and being given the opportunity to be creative.

    12. Why did the adults suggest adding “life skills" to school curriculums?

    A. To vary school curriculums.

    B. To enrich students' school life.

    C. To prepare students for future work and life.

    D. To save parents the trouble of educating kids.

    13. What did Professor Selwyn think of the adults' suggestions?

    A. Reasonable.

    B. Ridiculous.

    C. Interesting.

    D. Impractical.

    14. What does Paragraph 3 focus on?

    A. Opinions from the surveyed.

    B. Differences of school subjects.

    C. Reasons for the school survey.

    D. Investigations of the respondents.

    15. What can we know from the passage?

    A. The present curriculums are to adults' taste.

    B. Students' interests have been greatly promoted.

    C. The parents quizzed think highly of school life.

    D. Contemporary life skills involve resume writing.

Four ways to save money at airports

Going on holiday can be an expensive business, so the last thing you want to do is spend a

fortune at the airport. Here are some ideas for saving money before you fly.

      Book a first-class lounge (休息室).

It might sound strange, but paying for a first-class lounge may well save you money in the

long run. Prices vary between airports, but for adults it is usually £20 or under, £15 or under for

children and free for babies. This covers the cost of a comfortable room to wait in as well as food

    and drinks. __16___

    Take an empty water bottle.

This is a really simple way to save money. Take an empty water bottle with you and fill it up

at a water fountain in the airport. __17___

You can get collapsible ( 可折叠的) water bottles that can be used over and again and fit

neatly in your bag. Plus it's a great way to cut down water bottle waste.

    __18___

Many airports have special offers and deals on products and meals, so remember to check the

website of the airport you are travelling with to see what is available.

    Get yourself prepared.

If you are going to a foreign airport, find out where everything is before you arrive. __19___

Look up your airport's website and see what information it has about the buildings, shops and

    transport. __20___

    A. Book ahead for parking.

    B. Take advantage of airport discount codes.

    C. This way you can save your cash on pricey drinks.

    D. Find a taxi that will take you where you need to go.

    E. Locate the water fountains and find the cheap places to eat.

    F. If you were planning on eating at the airport, this way could work out cheaper.

    G. The more prepared you are, the less likely you'll need to spend money unnecessarily.

    第二部分语言知识运用 (共两节,满分30)

    第一(15小题;每小题1分,满分15)

Endangered languages can be found throughout the world. Many languages now have fewer

than 100 or even fewer than 10 speakers. The crisis is not limited to remote regions of the

world. When Europeans first arrived in North America, 312 different languages were_21__of

which 123 are now known to be extinct. Of the_22__ languages, most speakers are grandparents

    and great- grandparents.

Different researchers offer different definitions of “endangered”. The system of_23__ used

by the Catalogue of Endangered Languages evaluates languages in four areas: the_24__ of all the

speakers, how often the language is conveyed to the next_25__, the rate at which it is losing

speakers and the_26__in which it is used. Based on this data, languages are ranked on a six-point scale from “safe” to “severely endangered". The midpoint, “endangered” refers to a language with between 100 and 1, 000 speakers who represent about half of the language's community or ethnic group. The language is spoken only by some parents, of whom very few teach it to their children. It is_27__ used at home and is not taught in schools or used for government business.

Languages become endangered due to a number of__28__ factors including globalization,

economics, technology, education policy, and changes in_29__attitudes. As the forces of

globalization make the world more interconnected, previously_ 30 language communities come

under pressure to participate in a larger economy, which means learning the area's majority

language. _31__ local schools often begin to teach the majority language instead of the local

tongue. Local languages also_32__ as communities adopt mobile phones and computers, most of

which run on software that has been translated into only a handful of languages. This trend_33__ as these devices connect users to the Internet. At this point, many communities undergo a cultural

_34__in which parents no longer value the language enough to teach it to their children.

Initiatives to_34__ endangered languages have become more numerous in recent years.

These efforts tend to focus on two main areas: the documentation of endangered languages, and

efforts to increase the use of endangered languages among younger speakers and in the

    community at large.

    第二节读后续写(满分 25)

    阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。续写的词数应为150左右。

He met her at a party. She was so outstanding. with many boys around her, while he was so

ordinary, with nobody paying attention to him.

At the end of the party, he invited her to have coffee with him. She was surprised, but out of

    politeness, she agreed.

They sat in a nice coffee shop. He was too nervous to say anything, and she felt

uncomfortable, thinking, “Please let me go home.”

Suddenly he asked the waiter, “Would you please give me some salt? I'd like to put it in my

    coffee."

Everybody stared at him. So strange! His face turned red, but, still, he put the salt in his

    coffee and drank it.

She asked him curiously, “Why do you have this hobby?”

He replied, “When I was a little boy, I was living near the sea. I liked playing in the sea, and I

could fee1 the taste of the sea, just like the taste of the salty coffee. Now every time I have the salty coffee, I always think of my childhood. I miss so much my hometown and my parents who are still living there."

While saying that he couldn't hold back his tears. She was deeply touched. That's his true

feeling, from the bottom of his heart. A man who can speak out his homesickness must be a man

who loves home, cares about home, and has responsibility for his family.

Then she also started to speak about her faraway hometown, her childhood, and her family.

That was a really nice talk, also a beautiful beginning of their story.

They continued to date. She found that actually he was a man who met all her demands: he

was kind -hearted, warm and careful. He was such a good person but she almost missed him!

Thanks to his salty coffee! Then the story went on just like every beautiful love story: the

princess married the prince, and then they were living in happiness... And, every time she made

coffee for him, she put some salt in the coffee.
