Flying down a 488-meter-long slide provides plenty of excitement for most people. But for those who like more extreme adventures, Nicaragua offers an even more exciting slide experience. The thought of racing down an active volcano with only a board is enough to get most people hot under the collar. But for thrill-seeking sports fanatics, boarding down a 2,380-foot-high volcano at the speed of 80 km/h is the coolest sport around.

Thousands of travelers are heading to the foothills of Nicaragua’s Cerro Negro to take part in the new sporting craze (狂热). Surfers, dressed in protective jump suits, knee-pads and helmets, receive brief instructions and then try sliding down a short slope(斜坡). After that, it’s time for the real thing. Sitting on their specially-constructed boards, surfers push off and fly straight down a 488-meter-long slope. The black volcanic ash provides a dusty, dirty ride. But boarders usually arrive at the bottom with smiles on their faces.

Phillip Southan, owner and manager of Bigfoot Hostel and Green Pathways Tours, said, "We started offering this trip in 2005 and it has become so popular. This is a unique tour as nowhere else in the world can you board down an active volcano."

"What we offer is a tour for everyone with absolutely no experience. One of the greatest attractions of the tour is that you get a bit of everything. Since 2005, more than 10,000 people have traveled to Cerro Negro to give it a try."

"When you are on the top you will have the opportunity to stand near the crater(火山口) and see a smoking volcano. But the biggest risk is that you will take the chance of getting some scratches if you fall over."

"Many years of experience has taken this tour to a level where it is safe but still fun and for some people a little frightening. We are always working on ways to continue improving it for the future."

24.Which words can best describe the slide in Cerro Negro?

    A. Secure but tiring.       B. Enjoyable but risky.

    C. Popular but demanding.      D. Worthwhile but painful.

25.What does the underlined words "the real thing" refer to?

    A. Sliding down the volcanic slope.          B. Escaping the black volcanic ash.

    C. Heading to the mountaintop alone.        D. Receiving professional slide instructions

26.In what way is the slide in Cerro Negro special?

    A. It is available to everyone.          B. It has the longest slope worldwide.

    C. It is based on an active volcano.     D. It offers specially-constructed boards.

27.What makes the slide in Cerro Negro relatively safe according to Phillip Southan?

    A. High-tech safety facilities.      B. Knowledge and skills from practice.

    C. Advanced training guidance on the slide.   D. Staff’s familiarity with the surroundings.

Among astronomers, women of color face more harassment than any other group, according to a new study published on Monday.

The online survey of 474 astronomers and planetary scientists found that 28% of the women of color who responded reported feeling unsafe in their workplace due to their race, and that about 40% reported feeling unsafe because of their gender(性别). It also showed that 18% of women of color — as well as 12% of white women — said they’d skipped at least one class, meeting, fieldwork opportunity, or professional event because they were worried about their safety.

"This isn’t something anyone can point to and say," Kathryn Clancy, lead author of the paper, told BuzzFeed News. "These are all current issues that women of color are facing right now. They’re feeling unsafe today. They’re skipping professional events today."

"The study really reinforces(使更强烈) a lot of what the literature already tells us — that women of color are more likely to experience multiple forms of harassment and feel more strongly the impact of a very unfriendly or aggressive work environment in science," Zuleyka Zevallos, a sociologist at Swinburne University of Technology in Australia, told BuzzFeed News.

The study also outlined several approaches to addressing the problem, including creating a set of standards of behavior, diversity and cultural awareness training, and hiring many more women of color.

Clancy also stressed that while professional societies could do a lot to foster culture change and make demands on their memberships, universities need to have swifter consequences for discrimination, and make it easier for victims to discuss these issues both formally and informally. "It’s upsetting to me in a lot of ways that so many women of color haven’t been listened to in the last several decades," Clancy said. "We think the science is going to be different than other workplaces — we just have to stop living in that fantasy."

28.What makes some women of color miss the fieldwork opportunity?

    A. Their resistance to culture change.    B. The unfriendly work environment.

    C. Their lack of professional skills.     D. Their concern about safety.

29.What can be done to reduce harassment women of color face?

    A. Offering them more job opportunities.

    B. Introducing relative laws to protect their rights.

    C. Developing their cultural awareness in the workplace.

    D. Making people realize the importance of cultural diversity.

30.What message is conveyed in the last paragraph?

    A. People need to treat things with reason.

    B. Women of color have no advantage in science.

    C. Universities should treat women of color equally.

    D. Gender discrimination is very common in society.

31.What is the passage mainly about?

    A. How societies continue to fail women of color.

    B. Many women of color feel unsafe working in science.

    C. Diverse data shows people need to focus on women of color.

    D. Why women of color in science are few and far between.

    D

For environmental reasons, Britain will ban all new petrol- and diesel-(柴油)powered vehicles from its roads beginning in 23 years, a government report says.

The plan, expected Wednesday, aims to start removing petrol and diesel engines in 2040. It follows a similar official statement in France and comes after the British government was ordered by the High Court to develop new plans to reduce NO2 in the air. Judges ruled that previous clean-air plans were not enough to meet European Union pollution limits in the coming years.

Britain’s government has said the poor air quality has an unnecessary and avoidable negative effect on citizens’ health, and costs up to $3.5 billion in annual lost productivity.

Part of the new plan involves an offer of $260 million to local governments to change rules where vehicle emissions(排放物)are over EU standards. Ideas so far include changing road layouts, reprogramming traffic lights and charging a fee for the oldest and most polluting cars on the road.

The plan also includes $1.3 billion for government purchase of extreme-low-emission vehicles, nearly $130 million to improve infrastructure for electric vehicle charging stations and $378 million for remodeling existing vehicles.

Climate change is also a reason for the plan to get these vehicles off the road. "We can’t carry on with diesel and petrol cars," Environment Secretary Michael Gove said. "It’s important we all prepare for a significant change which deals not just with the problems of health caused by emissions, but the broader problems caused in terms of accelerating climate change."

Gove added that local communities are partly responsible for coming up with ways to limit emissions, including possible limitations on commuters(上下班往返的人) and the addition of cleaner mass transportation options. Local leaders are called on to draw up "appropriate plans" to deal with climate challenges related to emissions, he said.

32.Why does the British government decide on this ban?

    A. To focus on its citizens’ health.     B. To follow in France’s footsteps.

    C. To respond to the court’s request.     D. To promote solar energy in transport.

33.Which measure may the British government take to achieve its plan?

    A. Limiting the number of traffic lights.

    B. Changing the way roads are arranged.

    C. Removing old and high-emission vehicles.

    D. Investing in companies with electric vehicles.

34.What can be inferred from Gove’s words?

    A. United efforts are needed to fulfill the plan.

    B. Convenient public transportation is badly needed.

    C. Vehicle emissions are the key factor in climate change.

    D. Petrol and diesel cars may hold back economic progress.

35.What is the best title for this passage?

    A. Practical ways to reduce vehicle emissions

    B. The EU forces Britain to improve the poor air quality

    C. Britain plans to take petrol and diesel engines off roads

    D. Relationship between vehicle emissions and climate change
