Summer is fleeting, just like the youth. But the books we read stay with us for the lifetime. Our editors independently research and recommend the following for teens to enjoy!
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
In Nazi Germany, 11-year-old Liesel Meminger is living outside of Munich when she discovers a book in the snow and it changes her life forever. She begins stealing books from Nazi and the mayor’s library. As she becomes fascinated with words, she begins writing about her life during this dangerous time. Beautifully-written and deeply moving, this novel stands out in the crowded field of Holocaust (大屠杀) literature. Despite the tragic and disturbing storyline, The Book Thief is filled with warmth, humor, and hope.
    OCDaniel by Wesley King
This first-person narrative is told from the perspective of Daniel, a 13-year-old who tries to hide
his obsessive compulsive disorder (强迫症) as he struggles to fit into the cruel world of middle school. Then he gets a note that puts him in the middle of a mystery. The plot revolves around the mystery, so
it’s not too clinical and focused on OCD. Full of heartbreak and joy, as well as important lessons,
OCDaniel is a thrilling novel that will definitely have you supporting Daniel and eagerly turning the pages.
Courage to Soar: A Body in Motion, A Life in Balance by Simone Biles
American Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles shares her inspiring and fascinating journey from
her early childhood in foster care to the Olympic podium (领奖台). In her own words, Biles describes all hardships that she experienced along the way. Her attractive stories give insight into her determined spirit and positive attitude, even when under pressure. When reading Biles’ words, it’s difficult not to be motivated and encouraged to dream big and work hard.
A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket

to reveal the mysteries of their family. Filled with many plot twists, appealing mysteries, and exciting adventures, this series manages to keep you hooked all the way through the last book. Lemony Snicket’s entertaining writing style and dark sense of humor make them fun reads.

Grandma Pugh sized up the baby like a pig at the farmers’ market. There was a pause and then she pronounced. “He’s got nice long legs.” She clapped her hands once in approval. But then she frowned and leaned forward. Everyone waited anxiously. The baby had opened his eyes and was staring up. “But those cross eyes won’t do,” she declared firmly, shaking her head in disappointment.
That had been Freddie Pilcher’s first meeting with Grandma Pugh. Since then, ten years had
passed. Much to his grandmother’s satisfaction, she’d been proven right about the boy’s legs. He was a regular beanpole. Grandma Pugh had also been correct about his eyes. Freddie had been wearing glasses to correct his vision since he was two years old. His current pair was thick, and cheap-looking, but at least he could see.
Freddie not only had poor eyesight, but he was also clumsy. He wasn’t good at schoolwork either.
But there was one thing that the boy was good at and it was all on account of the length of his legs. He could jump.
Freddie was the best jumper in school. Not only could he leap the furthest but also the highest. At
breaktimes, he entertained the little ones by leaping over the school wall into Mrs Hobson’s garden and then rapidly jumping back. She had been up to see the head teacher several times because somebody had been crushing her vegetables.
It was badgers (獾), Freddie suggested, when quizzed by Miss Harpy — definitely badgers; no
doubt about it. His dad had terrible problems with badgers. Only last week he had lost two rows of carrots. Freddie had woken one night and heard them tearing through the garden, a whole herd of them. They rooted up the lawn and dug up the vegetables. Terrible things, badgers. All the other children
nodded their heads wisely. There was a moment’s pause in Class Three as everyone thought about the
dreadful damage that badgers could do.
    24. What do we know about Grandma Pugh?
    A. She was present at the birth of baby Freddie.
    B. She was unwilling to listen to the ideas of others.
    C. She was a figure of great importance in the family.
    D. She valued physical appearance over all other things.
    25. Why did Freddie jump over the school wall?
    A. To annoy his teacher. B. To escape from school.
    C. To amuse his schoolmates. D. To damage Mrs Hobson’s vegetables.
    26. Which of the following best describes Freddie’s physical appearance?
    2020年2月第三次测验英语试题 第 2 页 共 8页
    A. B. C. D.
    27. Why does Freddie talk about badgers in the final paragraph?
    A. To explain the cause of the damage.
    B. To warn the class about their danger.
    C. To describe what happened to his father’s garden.
    D. To make up an excuse for the cause of the damage.
    C
Punks, Ravers, Mods and Teddy Boys. No, these aren’t some hot new bands, but the names of a number of British youth subcultures from the last 70 years. Youth Club, a UK non-profit organization, released a book earlier this year celebrating many different subcultures from throughout Britain’s recent history.
“A catalyst (催化剂) for creativity on the worldwide stage, British youth culture movements from
the Teddy Boys of the 1950s to the Grime Scene of the 2000s continue to play a pioneering role in music, fashion and creativity across the globe,” it wrote on its website.
These subcultures were traditionally a way for young people to show their personalities to others.
Walking around London in the 1970s would have meant seeing dozens of young “punks”—people
dressed in ripped denim, leather jackets, body piercings and with brightly-dyed hair on the streets. And in the 90s, “ravers” were young people who threw all-night parties in abandoned buildings or car parks.
So, what was the reason behind these subcultures?
“On both sides of the Atlantic, more and more young disappointed teenagers were looking for an escape from the boredom and restrictions of society,” wrote Ian Youngs, BBC entertainment reporter. “Unemployment, racial tensions and social changes added fuel to their fires.”
Youth subcultures have almost disappeared in the West. Some experts believe the reason for this is
the instant and low-priced availability of music and clothing in the Internet age. “Fashion and music, they’re much cheaper and they’re much faster today, ” Ruth Adams, a culture lecturer at King’s College London told The Guardian.
“When I was a teenager, you had to stick to one type of music or fashion, because otherwise it
cost more money. Now, it’s all a bit vaguer,” she said, believing that it’s harder to figure out someone’s personality or music tastes nowadays just by looking at them.
Despite this, Adams believes that today’s young people are still finding their own way to express
themselves, but in a more modern way. “It’s certainly happening online,” she said. “It’s a lot easier to use personas (伪装) online just by showcasing certain types of mysterious knowledge. ”

Every year migratory (迁徙的) bats travel from Mexico to Bracken Cave, where they spend the summer consuming insects that would otherwise hungrily eat common food crops. But the bats have
been showing up far earlier than they did two decades ago.
In a study, scientists at Rothamsted Research, an agricultural laboratory in England, used radar
data from 160 U.S. weather stations to analyze activity in the Texas bat colony from 1995 through 2017. They discovered the creatures were leaving their winter quarters in Mexico earlier and reproducing sooner. They were also astonished to find increasing numbers of bats overwintering (过冬) at Bracken
Cave instead of heading back to their cold weather quarters in Mexico. Overwintering is a sign that warmer temperatures change the bats’ annual rhythms, Rothamsted biologist Phillip Stepanian says.
A separate study of migratory bats in Indiana, published last year, found that temperature
variations affected arrival and departure times—likewise hinting at the potential influence of climate change. Joy O’Keefe, a biology professor at Indiana State University and co-author of that study, says early arrival at their summer habitats could expose these bats to cold snaps (寒流), and they could
    freeze to death.
Joy O’Keefe and her colleagues also found that changing bat migration times can also clash with rainfall patterns. Many insects that bats eat breed in seasonal lakes and puddles. If the bats arrive too early to benefit from summer rainfall and the resulting abundance of insects, they may struggle to feed their pups (幼崽) or skip reproduction altogether, O’Keefe says. She fears this shift could cause
Midwestern bats to decrease toward extinction, which would be bad news for humans. “Declines in bat
populations could have severe effects for crop success,” she says, adding that bats also “control significant disease vectors, such as mosquitoes.”
However, scientists are not certain that climate change alone is causing the Bracken Cave bat
colony to migrate earlier. They have found a direct link between seasonal temperatures and bird migration, but bats are also influenced by factors such as changes in wind speed and direction. And
there are other complications. “Bats are mysterious little animals that move mostly at night and are
    2020年2月第三次测验英语试题 第 4 页 共 8页
difficult to observe and track,” Stepanian says. “We have this conceptual picture of what might be happening, but really tying it to the cause is the next step.”
    32. Scientists at Rothamsted Research found that _________.
    A. bats prefer colder weather
    B. bats delay their reproduction
    C. warming affects bat migration
    D. radar can be used to observe bats
    33. Joy O’Keefe discovered that _________.
    A. bats are used to living in rainfall seasons
    B. bats’ earlier migration might harm farming
    C. insects’ reproduction helps to spread disease
    D. insects shortage makes bats reproduce earlier
    34. What does the last paragraph want to tell us?
    A. Wind speed and direction affect bats.
    B. It is difficult to observe and track bats.
    C. Climate change makes bats migrate earlier.
    D. Further research on the cause is necessary.
    35. What is the best title for the passage?
    A. Bats’ habitats B. Endangered bats
    C. Bats’ schedule D. Bats, our good friends
    第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Researchers define self-control or self-discipline as “ability to control or change one’s inner
responses”. 36 However, some people think that as an immediate consequence of leading
lives of constant self-control, they aren’t likely to gain a lot of pleasure from life.
37 To start, 414 adults completed an online survey. In the survey, they rated their
self-control by indicating how much they agreed with 14 statements, such as “I indeed do certain things that are bad for me, if they are fun.”
In their study, 205 adults were given smart phones and required to report their emotions at random
moments throughout the week. 38 If so, they had to report how hard they tried to resist them,
and whether they eventually ended up acting on them. 来源:学|科|网Z|X|X|K]
The researchers found that the more self-control people had, the more satisfied they were with
their lives in the long run. 39 In fact, such people’s increased happiness to a large extent
accounted for the increased life satisfaction.
These researchers also figured out that people high in self-control are simply less likely to find themselves in situations where that’s even an issue. They don’t waste time fighting inner battles over
whether or not to eat a second piece of cake. 40 And that, it would seem, makes them
happier ... even if occasionally a little bit sad.
    A. In a word, they are not bothered about such little desires.
    B. Researchers checked these general ideas through a survey and study.
    C. But they are still uncertain why some people are more able to control their inner responses.
    D. Meanwhile, they were also asked to report whether they were experiencing any desires.
    E. However, people with more self -control were also more likely to be happy in the short run.
    2020年2月第三次测验英语试题 第 5 页 共 8页
    F. It is generally believed that in the long run self-control can make people happier.
    G. Most adults reported they failed to control their desire to play video games before an exam.

The Dutch are used to living in a country 61 (expose) frequently to dangers of deadly
floods. A country with half of 62 land below sea level cannot afford to ignore the problem of
rising sea level, and Holland, which has already spent about $2.5 trillion on flood 63 (prevent),
plans to invest more over the next century.
Life in these challenging circumstances has inspired the Dutch to develop many excellent methods
of fighting floods. Thanks to 64 skills of Dutch engineers, flooding in Holland is rarely
widespread, and is instead limited 65 certain areas of the country. Two such areas are the
valleys of the Rhine and the Meuse Rivers. Even with large flood walls, these rivers regularly flood the
