Street art is visual art created in public places, usually outside of traditional art venues. The term became popular during the graffiti(涂鸦)art boom of the early 1980s. The average person on the street would associate street art with run-down urban centers and New York's graffiti explosion of the 1970s and 1980s. During that period, graffiti artists often painted subways, benches, and other urban surfaces. But artists who choose the streets as their gallery often do so because they prefer to communicate directly with the public at large and be free from the confinement of the formal art world. Therefore, most major cities now have what is called a "wall of fame"-a public space where street artists come to paint, compete, and connect with other artists

Located near Dubai International Airport, Dubai Festival City, for example, was host to street art from 2007 to 2011. At an event sponsored by Montana, a popular spray paint brand, a wall was designated as a canvas for international artists to work on. After the event, officials allowed the wall to remain, and creative art workers would get together there every weekend. Since then, Dubai has made a name for itself in the art world. It has a respected annual art fair called Art Dubai, which, having celebrated its thirteenth year in March 2019, is widely regarded as one of the highlights of the Middle East's art calendar.

The street art scene in Dubai operates with the approval of the authorities. Planned works on buildings or murals painted on wood panels are beginning to pop up on blank walls and at art events all over the city, thanks largely to the support of art galleries and institutions. Corporate collaborations, though frowned(皱眉)upon by some artists, are also helping to make street art more visible in Dubai.

    24. Why would artists choose the streets over traditional art galleries to exhibit their work?

    A. It is very expensive to have their work displayed in art galleries.

    B. They can talk to other artists from around the world on the streets.

    C. They can more freely express their concepts of art through street art.

    D. It is more fun to paint on surfaces like park benches and blank walls.

    25. What does "Corporate collaborations, though frowned upon by some artists" mean in the last paragraph?

    A. Some artists think corporate collaborations make street art visible.

    B. Some artists regard corporate collaborations as a promotional activity.

    C. Some artists don't approve of the idea of collaborating with corporations.

    D. Some artists don't like those art galleries that are supported by corporations.

    26. Why is Dubai mentioned in the passage?

    A. To introduce a new art form.            C. To explain how to do street art.

    B. To promote the Dubai Festival City.      D. To illustrate a recent trend in street art

    27. What is the author's attitude toward street art?

    A. Doubtful.       B. Reserved.      C. Welcoming.      D. Disapproving.

    C

West Nile is a tropical disease that begins in birds, which pass it on to mosquitoes that then go on to infect human beings with a bite. Most people who contract West Nile do not experience any symptoms at all, but, if they do, symptoms typically develop between 3 to 14 days after a mosquito bite. About 1 in 5 persons suffers fever, headaches, and body aches, usually lasting a week or so. A far less lucky 1 in 150 experiences high fever, tremors, paralysis, and coma. Some-especially the elderly and those with weak immune systems-die.

That is what made the major outbreaks of West Nile in the U.S. in the summer of 2012 so scary. The situation was particularly bad in Dallas, Texas, where the West Nile virus killed 10 people and sickened more than 200. The city declared a state of emergency and began aerial spraying of a pesticide to kill the mosquitoes, even though residents argued that the pesticide could be more dangerous than the disease.

Why was the summer of 2012 so hospitable to the West Nile virus and the mosquitoes that carry it? Blame the weather. An extremely mild winter allowed more mosquitoes than usual to survive, while the unusually high temperatures in that scorching summer further increased their number by speeding up their life cycle. The economic crisis may have also played a role: Homeowners who were not able to pay their bank loans were forced to abandon their properties, sometimes leaving behind pools that made excellent mosquito breeding grounds.

The severity of tropical diseases is also a matter of whether governments are capable-and willing-to defend their populations against infections. Dallas County was not doing some of the key things to slow the spread of West Nile, such as testing dead birds and setting mosquito traps to test for the presence of the disease. Tropical infections are thus as much related to government inaction as they are to climate.

    28. What is this passage mainly about?

    A. West Nile and methods to fight it.

    B. West Nile and governmental efficiency.

    C. West Nile and its relation to tropical diseases.

    D. West Nile and the conditions its virus spreads rapidly in.

    29. Which of the following statements is true about West Nile?

    A. Its symptoms usually appear within two weeks.

    B. It is spread through air and water in tropical areas.

    C. Over 20% of people who contract it will suffer severe symptoms.

    D. It comes from direct human contact with birds infected with the virus.

    30. What did Dallas County do to fight off West Nile?

    A. They asked citizens to stay away from dead birds.

    B. They drained the swimming pools in the county.

    C. They encouraged citizens to get vaccinations.

    D. They sprayed pesticide from the air.

    31. Which of the following is a reason why Dallas was hit most seriously in the U.S. in 2012?

    A. The weather of the previous winter was not as cold as usual.

    B. The residents worried about the county's decision and action.

    C. The government did not issue a warning about the disease in time.

    D. The increasing population in Texas raised the risk of contracting the disease.

    D

Fancy your own satellite? Arizona State University is working towards making this a reality with its SunCube FemtoSat project. Smaller than a standard CubeSat, the low-cast student-designed spacecraft is aimed at providing greater access to space for scientists and hobbyists alike.

Assistant professor Jekan Thanga and a team of students have been developing the SunCube

FemtoSat for the past two years. The small 3×3×3cm cube weighs in at just 35g and a longer (3×3×9cm, 100g) model has also been designed, which includes storage space.

Each SunCube FemtoSat has its own communication, data collection and propulsion(推进) systems and is powered by solar panels. It is made of off-the-shelf parts that are available in shops, and the energy-efficient solar panels arc cut from scrap(碎片), which makes it save energy, sold at a discount by manufacturers. "With a spacecraft of this size, any university can do it," says Thanga. "That's part of our major goal-space discovery for everybody."

The team says that while launching your own satellite would usually cost between US $60,000-70,000 per kilo, it would only cost$1,000 to send a SunCube FemtoSat to the International Space Station, and S 3,000 to send it into low earth orbit. Leaving the earth's gravity would cost an estimated $ 27,000.

The FemtoSat would be packed with a "jack in the box" style system that matches standard CubeSat sizes (around 10 cubic cm), simplifying the process of getting the tiny satellite into orbit. NASA has sent 30 CubeSats into space over the last years, with another 50 awaiting launch.

Thanga and his staff view the FemtoSat as a starting point for scientists and students, and even hope the device could be bought on the website like Amazon one day. Thanga imagines developing four main applications for the device, including hands-on testing experiences for students, and artificial gravity experiments. In addition, groups of SunCube FemtoSats could eventually be able to do the job of larger spacecraft at a vastly discounted cost.

    32. What is the major goal of the SunCube FemtoSat project?

    A. To assist average individuals to explore space.  B. To provide easy access to spacecraft design.

    C. To help carry out a classroom experiment.     D. To act on college teaching in outer space.

    33. What is special about SunCube FemtoSats?

    A. They are used to collect information.    B. They are designed for lab use.

    C. They are of the same weight.          D. They are energy-saving.

    34. What does Thanga expect of SunCube FemtoSats?

    A. They'll be available online.               B. They'll be provided for free.

    C. They'll match the size of CubeSats.        D. They'll be sent into space with CubeSats.

    35. What can be the best title for the text?

    A. FemtoSats Will Rule Space               B. Your Own Satellite Is Coming

    C. Going into Space Has Been Affordable      D. You can Design Your Own Spacecraft

    第二节(5小题;每小题2分,满分10)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Copernicus, founder of modem astronomy, was born in 1473 to a well-to-do merchant family in Torun, Poland. He was sent off to attend university in Italy, studying mathematics and optics, and canon law. Returning from his studies abroad, Copernicus was appointed to an administrative position in the cathedral of Frauenburg. There he spent a sheltered and academic life for the rest of his days.

36   He made his observations from a tower situated on the protective wall around the cathedral. His observations were made with the "bare eyeball," so to speak, as a hundred years were to pass before the invention of the telescope. In 1530, Copernicus completed his famous work De Revolutionibus, which later played a major role in changing the philosophical view of humankind's place in the universe.   37

Copernicus died in 1543 and was never to know what a stir his work would cause. In his book, he asserted that the Earth rotated on its axis once daily and traveled around the Sun once yearly.   38   People then regarded the Earth as stationary, situated at the center of the universe, with the Sun and all the planets revolving around it. Copernicus' theory challenged the long-held belief that God created the Heavens and the Earth, and could overturn the core values of the Catholic world.   39   Other ministers quickly followed suit, saying of Copernicus, "This fool wants to turn the whole art of astronomy upside down."

Ironically, Copernicus had dedicated his work to Pope Paul III.   40   The Church ultimately banned De Revolutionibus, and the book remained on the list of forbidden reading material for nearly three centuries thereafter.

    A. Copernicus died on May 24, 1543 in what is now Frombork, Poland.

    B. The book, however, wasn't published until two months before his death.

    C. If this act was an attempt to seek the Catholic Church's approval, it was of no use.

    D. Copernicus returned to Poland, where he became a church administrator and doctor.

    E. This went against the philosophical and religious beliefs held during medieval times.

    F. Religious leader Martin Luther voiced his opposition to the sun-centered system model.

G In his spare time, Copernicus studied the stars and the planets, applying his math knowledge to the mysteries of the night sky.
