Russian police have started a new attempt to get drivers to slow down at zebra crossings by having painted horses as zebras walk across on the busiest streets in some of the big cities in an attempt to improve road safety and raise awareness among Russia’s notoriously (臭名昭著地) careless drivers.
The light grey horses, painted with black stripes, carried signs on their backs reading: “Careful, children are on their way to school.” The police sent the “zebras” to several different locations in the Russian capital, where officials in orange vests walked them over zebra crossings and handed out leaflets (传单) to passing drivers.
Some held up rainbow-coloured umbrellas over the painted animals to protect them from the rain. Russian roads are notoriously dangerous and drivers still rarely take the initiative (主动采取措施) to avoid pedestrians. Nearly half of all traffic accidents in the country’s big cities are caused by cars hitting pedestrians, and a third of those occur on crossings, according to traffic police figures published last month.
In the first six months of this year, 378 people were killed and more than 6, 600 injured on pedestrian crossings in Russia, according to police. In Moscow alone, 43 people were killed, including two children.
Though police officials said that only safe paint would be used on the animals, animal rights activists still disagreed with the idea, accusing the police of “treating animals like garbage”.
“Children understand that paints are bad for animals,” the Interfax news agency quoted president of Vita animal rights group Irina Novozhilova as saying.
Let’s hope this part of the campaign is over and animals are left out of future attempts to raise pedestrians’ awareness.
41. Why do Moscow police have “zebras” walk across on the busiest streets?
A. To make a call on protecting animals.
B. To remind people zebras are in danger of extinction.
C. To tell people it is dangerous to cross streets.
D. To raise drivers’ awareness of road safety.
42. What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The zebras. B. The horses.
C. The policemen. D. The drivers.
43. From the text we can learn that ________.
A. most Russian drivers have realized the seriousness of the problem
B. Russian drivers often ignore traffic lights
C. Russian drivers seldom give way to pedestrians
D. the driving skills of Russian drivers are bad
44. What do animal rights activists think of the new attempt?
A. Drivers must slow down at pedestrian crossings.
B. These animals are ill-treated by the police.
C. The paints used on the horses are safe.
D. Road safety should be improved.
45. Which word can best describe the author’s attitude towards the campaign?
A. Critical. B. Reserved.
C. Doubtful. D. Positive.
【答案】41. D 42. B 43. C 44. B 45. A

NASA has a new job listing, and it’s no joke. The US space agency is looking for a “joker” to join their planned mission to Mars.
A mission to Mars is no laughing matter. On average, the red planet is 140 million miles (225 million kilometers) away from Earth. A trip there would take around eight months in a small spacecraft. And Mars has a communications delay of 20 minutes. This means that astronauts will have to wait 20 minutes for a reply, when an emergency happens.
“When you’re living with others in a confined space for a long period of time, such as on a mission to Mars, problems are likely to occur,” Jeffrey Johnson, a scientist at the University of Florida, told the Guardian.
This is probably why NASA wants an astronaut with a sense of humor. “These are people that have the ability to pull everyone together,” Johnson said.
In stressful situations, perhaps humor is a way to know we aren’t alone. By laughing together, we share our stress. Then we can focus on our jobs instead of just worrying.
There are other examples of team “clowns”. One example is the journey to the South Pole led by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. It was a difficult journey, full of danger. Adolf Lindstrom, a cook at Amundsen’s team, was a “clown”. He made people laugh through the whole journey. Amundsen later wrote that Lindstrom was the most valuable member of the team.
But if you’re hoping that your favorite TV comedian will fly to Mars, that probably won’t happen.
“Being funny won’t be enough to land somebody the job,” Johnson said. “They also need to be an excellent scientist and engineer.”
Besides, they must be in top physical condition.
46. What is NASA’s new job listing?
A. A funny engineer. B. A talented clown.
C. A good cook. D. A popular comedian.
47. What does “a confined space” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. A crowded space. B. An empty space.
C. An open space. D. A small space.
48. How does the author think humor can help astronauts?
A. It can stop them from feeling worried.
B. It can encourage teamwork on a mission.
C. It can help them feel less homesick.
D. It can help them know themselves better.
49. What point does the author want to make with the example of the cook?
A. What explorers eat on their journey is very important.
B. An amateur can play a more important role than a professional.
C. Humorous people can cheer people up in difficult situations.
D. A mission to Mars is more difficult than a journey to the South Pole.
50. What could be the best title of the passage?
A. Keeping the Spirits Up
B. A Mission to Mars
C. A New Job Listing of NASA
D. Humorous Astronauts in NASA
【答案】46. B 47. D 48. B 49. C 50. C
D
Stop wasting your time thinking of reasons for your failures and shortcomings. Instead, realize that the seeds of success were planted within you when you were born. Only you have the power to make those seeds grow.
The seeds, and the power to grow them, are contained in the human mind. Success is a choice and not a chance. You can be a success if only you make the right choice.
You cannot be successful without first developing your self-esteem (自尊). Your level of self-esteem is always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over your life. People with low self-esteem do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their life. They are leaves tossed (摆) by the winds of chance blown about with any sudden change in the weather.
You can exercise control over your life only to the degree that you believe that you are responsible for whatever happens in your life. Losers think that everything happens by accident while successful people realize that they are responsible.
Everything happens as a result of something. If we can identify the cause, we can control the effect. We are responsible for what we consciously choose to accept and believe. Thoughts and beliefs cause everything. Our attitudes and actions are a result of habits ingrained in us over a period of time. One generally rises to the level that one expects. We are responsible for setting our expectations. Our success depends upon our level of confidence. We are responsible for either reinforcing (强化) good habits or kicking bad habits and consciously replacing them with consistently practiced good habits.
If you associate with positive-thinking people, you are definitely going to achieve success. On the contrary, the opposite happens. We are responsible for finding, planting, and nurturing (培育) the seeds that contain future victory, born from setbacks.
In short, in all areas of your life, whether they are financial, physical, emotional, or spiritual, you are responsible. Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it, you are on the road to success.
51. People with low self-esteem are compared to leaves because they ________.
A. are ready to change their minds
B. are easily affected by windy weather
C. don’t have the power to face their fate
D. can’t exercise control over themselves
52. Losers would think that ________.
A. success is the result of hard work
B. working hard will lead to success
C. their failure is only because of bad luck
D. they don’t make efforts to succeed
53. It can be inferred from Paragraph 5 that ________.
A. whether we will succeed depends on our attitudes
B. developing confidence is the key to future success
C. thoughts and beliefs are the result of creative mind
D. setting our expectations is essential before taking action
54. The last paragraph serves as ________.
A. the proof of the author’s points
B. the conclusion of the argument
C. an introduction to another topic
D. a comparison between two views
55. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Success Is a Choice B. The Secrets of Success
C. Develop Our Confidence D. How to Achieve Success
【答案】51. D 52. C 53. B 54. B 55. A

Bethany Hamilton has become a source of inspiration for millions through her story of faith, determination and hope. And now her story has become a major movie which is entitled Soul Surfer.
On October 31, 2003, at the age of 13, Bethany was attacked by a 15-foot tiger shark while surfing just off the shore of Hawaii. Bethany said, “It came out of the blue. I had no warning at all; not even the slightest sign of danger on the horizon. The waves were small and inconsistent, and I was just kind of rolling along with them, relaxing on my board with my left arm dangling (悬摆) in the cool water. I remember thinking, ‘I hope the surf picks up soon...’”
“That’s all it took: a split second. I felt a lot of pressure and a couple of lightning fast tugs (猛拽). Then I watched in shock as the water around me turned bright red. Somehow, I stayed calm. My left arm was gone along with a huge piece of my surfboard...”
Her friends had to get her to the beach, which took 20 minutes of paddling. After losing more than 40 percent of her blood and making it through several surgeries, Bethany was well on her way to recovery due to an unbelievably positive attitude. In January 2004, Bethany made her return to surf competition and with no intention of stopping, Bethany continued to enter and shine in competitions. Initially, she adopted a custom-made board that was longer and slightly thicker than standard and had a handle for her right arm, making it easier to paddle, and she learned to kick more to make up for the loss of her left arm.
Just over a year after the attack, she took first place—winning her first National Title. Now she competes with the world’s best and travels the globe.
