No doubt you’ve heard of the increasingly popular “raw food” and “whole food” diets.
why are people so interested in eating raw food or whole food? one reason is that eating these types of food reduces the risk of acid(酸) accumulation in your body.
Raw and whole foods are usually digested more efficiently than cooked and refined foods. When we cook foods, we destroy the natural enzymes(酶) that are part of the food in its raw form. These enzymes were intended by nature to help us digest the food. When we consume food without these natural enzymes, our bodies either digest the food improperly or allow an excessive amount of nutrients to be absorbed into the bloodstream.
In both instances, the result is obesity. When too many nutrients are absorbed at once, the body converts the excess glucose(葡萄糖) into fat. Improperly digested food moves slowly through the digestive tract, where it becomes increasingly acidic. To protect its vital organs from this acidic waste, the body converts the acid into fat and stores it safely away from the organs.
Chemical additives in processed foods make the situation worse. These chemicals confuse the appetite mechanism that tells us when we’ve had enough to eat. Processed foods also upset the digestive cycle. The body will either identify these foods as allergens and then store them safely away from the organs as fat, or the remains of undigested food will become acidic and enter the bloodstream as acid waste.
Acid waste that is not converted into fat remains in the bloodstream, where it sticks to the blood vessel walls and blocks the passage of vital oxygen and nutrients headed for the body’s cells. The body’s metabolism becomes inactive, and the result is weight gain and obesity. If the metabolism continues to grow inactive, all of the body’s organs are potentially affected. Degenerative disease sets in, cells die, acid continues to accumulate, and the cycle repeats on a more damaging scale.
    21. What is the main purpose of this passage?
    A. To advocate eating more raw and whole foods.
    B. To distinguish between raw and processed foods.
    C. To keep people informed of the harm of acid accumulation.
    D. To warn people of the problem of obesity.
    22. What can we learn from the text?
    A. Processed foods are beneficial to digestive cycle.
    B. PH value is closely associated with body weight.
    C. The accumulation of acid in the digestive tract makes digestion more effective.
    D. Processed foods are unhealthy because they destroy body’s cells.
    23. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
    A. Giving up cooked and refined foods is a new lifestyle.
    B. Acid waste will be totally converted into fat.
    C. Metabolism becomes inactive when we work out less.
    D. Metabolism affects weight and health to a large extent.
    B
We know from plenty of research that isolation is bad for us. It's associated with a clutch of diseases including depression, high blood pressure and heart disease. And yet teenagers pursue isolation, not in the sense of having no family or friends, but in the sense of walling themselves off from real social contact.
And what do teenagers use to build those walls? They use the device of our times - a screen. Screens of all kinds. In whatever form, screens are addictive. And addictive from an early age. Research has shown that given the chance, six-month-old babies prefer screens to real human faces.
Hand in hand with this addiction to screens we are seeing an explosion of teenage mental health problems. Social media claims to be inclusive, keeping you connected. But it's not. It isolates you from real people. Screens have even been described as being toxic for teenagers .
Psychologist Jean Twenge, a professor at San Diego State University, believes today's teenagers are "on the edge" of a major mental health crisis and advoactes, "do anything that doesn't involve a screen". The problem is, she claims, children born between 1995 and 2012 have grown up with a smartphone in their hands, and it has "changed every aspect" of their lives. The number of teenagers who actually see their friends frequently has dropped by more than 40% since 2000.In 2015, only 56% of 17-year-olds went on a date, down from 85% for Generation X-ers. Modern teenagers are slower to learn to drive, or earn money, and spend more time in the parental home. They're "on their phone, in their room, alone and often distressed", she says.
Some commentators, however, say we should be encouraging our children to spend more time online. Robert Hannigan, former director of GCHQ, said in August that Britain is desperately short of engineers and computer scientists, and urged children to develop cyber skills to compete in the digital economy.
I'm not the first to say that social media is inferior to real human contact, and harms mental health. Studies show teens who spend three hours a day online are 35% more likely to have a risk factor for suicide. The suicide rate among girls aged 12 to 14 has tripled in a decade.
    24. Social media has a negative effect on teenagers in the following aspects EXCEPT_____
    A. Walling themselves off from real social contact.
    B. Causing addiction to screens.
    C. Contributing to explosion of teenage mental health crisis.
    D. Being inclusive and keeping them connected.
    25. The underlined word” toxic” in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to “______”.
    A. Helpful. B. Harmful. C. Influential. D. Poisonous.
    26. What can we infer from paragraph 4?
    A. Jean Twenge advocates doing anything that doesn't involve a screen.
    B. Social media reduces real social contact.
    C. People hold different opinions about social media.
    D. Teenagers addicted to screens have no family or friend.
    27. What’s Robert Hannigan’s attitude to children’s spending much time on line?
    A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Negative. D. Indifferent.
    C
Some of the most successful technology business owners in Silicon Valley are immigrants. Silicon Valley is an area of northern California that is home to major technology companies like Apple, Google and Facebook.
For some immigrants, just living in the United States is the goal. But others have bigger dreams, like Qasar Younis. Younis is the chief operating officer of Y Combinator. Y Combinator is an investment company. It gives money to new technology businesses in return for part ownership.
If the company is sold or offers its shares for sale to the public, Y Combinator can make lots of money. Younis is from the Punjab area of Pakistan. He says he was just a normal child. But, he says he believed from an early age that he could be successful in the U.S.
Another Pakistani immigrant, Dilawar Syed, owns the software company Freshdesk. It provides customers with support services. Syed said the people who live in Silicon Valley create big opportunities for themselves and each other.
"The idea of making the impossible possible is the way we operate." And, he thinks Silicon Valley is totally different from any other place.
"I think the valley is unique. In that ecosystem, there is an interesting mix of enabling factors that allow people to develop themselves, to push themselves, to take risks, to fail often and then to succeed quite often in a spectacular fashion."
Many entrepreneurs(企业家) around the world dream of coming to California and starting a business. But how do they do it? There are organizations that can help.
Mohammad Ibrahim's Leaders is one of such groups. It invites leaders of start-ups from the Palestinian territories to attend a one-month program in Silicon Valley. Silicon Valley experts provide training and advice to the visitors. They learn how to market and grow their businesses. They find ways to increase sales. And Ibrahim says Leaders can connect the start-ups that need money with investors.
Another way people get their start is through internships(实习). Internships are mostly unpaid training positions at companies. Interns can gain valuable connections as well.
    28. What does the underlined “bigger dreams” in paragraph 2 refer to?
    A. Living in the U.S.
    B. Being successful in starting a business in the U.S.
    C. Taking risks in a spectacular fashion in the U.S.

It seems every week we find out that someone broke into a big company’s databases—like the recent Equifax data leak—and made off with millions of credit card numbers, passwords and other valuable information. And now a new kind of worry: someone could hijack your wireless home network and steal your information from under your nose.
That’s the possibility raised by a couple of cyber security researchers from the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium. The problem, they say, is a flaw in the very protocol meant to make WiFi secure. That protocol is called WiFi Protected Access II, WPA2. And WPA2’s weakness could allow an attacker within physical range of your WiFi network to make a copy of that network that they could then control. The researchers call their approach a key reinstallation attack (or KRACK).
It’s important to know that a KRACK attack remains imaginary for now. The scientists realized the threat while investigating wireless security. They’ll present this research on November 1st at the Computer and Communications Security (CCS) conference in Dallas and in December at the Black Hat Europe conference in London.
In their KRACK scenario, wireless devices would be fooled into connecting to the false network. And the attacker would be able to access all of the information that devices send and receive while connected to that network—even if that information has been encrypted(加密). Android and Linux would be especially vulnerable because of how their encryption keys are configured(配置).
One measure of protection against such an attack would be to make sure they you’ve installed the most up-to-date versions of your apps, browsers and wireless router software. Updated software is most likely to include the security patches(补丁) needed to avoid falling victim to a KRACK attack. Because chances are that KRACK won’t remain simply a proof-of-concept for long.
    32. What can we learn about KRACK?
    A. It causes the recent Equifax data leak.
    B. It’s a threat to cyber security.
    C. Its existence has been confirmed in the research.
    D. It won’t threat cyber security if the information has been encrypted.
    33. How can KRACK access your information?
    A. It breaks into your databases.
    B. It steals your information from under your nose.
    C. It makes a copy of the available network.
    D. It fools wireless devices into connecting to the public passwordless network.
    34. The underlined word” vulnerable” in paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to “______”.
    A. Efficient. B. Defensive. C. Sensitive. D. Offensive.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A. Data leak caused by KRACK B. Weakness of WP2
    C. How to avoid falling victim to a KRACK attack? D. Keep your WiFi off KRACK

如果你一直都在为职场压力而苦苦挣扎……ups and downs对应上文的balance 和下文的struggling to cope with workplace stress。

    I)ear Lucy, .
I have received your email. You asked me for some suggestions on how to be a guest in China.
Here are some suggestions received by most Chinese.
First of all, when you visit a Chinese family, you’d better bring some gifts. In China, it is usually considered impolite to visit someone with nothing in your hand. Therefore, it’s a good idea to buy some fresh fruits or a box of milk. In addition, table manners are of vital importance as well. We Chinese like to treat our guests with many delicious dishes. When at table, you shouldn’t begin eating first, but follow the host or the senior one. Sometimes, the host will help you with some dishes, which is different from western traditions, and you should show your appreciation.
All in all, just as the old saying goes, “When in Rome, do as Romans do.” I do hope you will enjoy yourself in your friend’s home.
    Yours sincerely,
    Li Hua

    听力原文
    (Text 1)
W: Jack, how do you like the play?
M: It’s a simple story with a happy ending. But luckily they had a very strong actor and he managed to carry the whole play.
    (Text 2)
M: Have we missed it? The man said it’s only 5 blocks away opposite the bank.
W: Wait a minute. The Chinese Restaurant? The National Bank? There it is, the Radisson Hotel.
    (Text 3)
M: Let’s meet at twenty to five.
W: Well, could we make it twenty past five?
M: That’s a bit late for me. I could manage ten past.
    W: OK. See you then.
    (Text 4)
M: What time are we leaving for the outing?
W: I’ll phone you tomorrow. I should have everything sorted out by then.
    (Text 5)
W: Thanks for all you’ve done for me. Hey, listen, would you like to go to see a film sometime?
M: Yeah, that’d be great! I’d love it.
    (Text 6)
    W: Hey, where is everybody?
M: They took Ben to the park. Where have you been?
W: Sorry, I’m late. I picked up the cake and it took me longer than I expected. When will the party start?
M: Ben invited eight children from school. And they’ll arrive at about 2:00 in the afternoon.
W: OK, then. I’ll put the candles on the cake and leave it in the kitchen. And then I’ll come and help set the table.
    (Text 7)
M: So Maisie, how was your holiday?
W: Oh, we loved it. Tom liked Germany best. But France was my favorite.
M: So did Rachel finally go with you?
W: No, she wasn’t able to. She was called away for a business trip to China.
M: That’s a pity. So where exactly did you go and visit?
W: Well, we travelled all over, Italy, Spain and Holland. We even bathed in the Swiss lake.
    M: You did? Really?
    (Text 8)
W: Bob, I’m sure you know about second-hand smoke.
    M: Of course I do.
W: But have you heard about third-hand smoke?
M: Third-hand smoke? I’m afraid not. What is it then?
W: Well, it’s here in today’s paper. Parents may think they’re protecting children from second-hand smoke when they smoke outside their home or only when the children are not there. But now researchers are warning about what they call third-hand smoke. When you smoke, dangerous matter from cigarettes gets into your hair and clothing. As babies are the weakest, when you come to a baby, you pass it to the baby and increase the chances of disease in the baby.
M: Is that so? In that case, I have to say that I should never get close to a baby.
W: That’s right. Actually, all smoking parents should do the same. Or better, give it up completely.
    (Text 9)
M: Hello, welcome to our programme, Today’s City. I’m Larry. We’re going to Louisville, Kentucky where our guest Michelle Ray comes from. She is proud of her middle-sized city with the small town feel and big city dreams. Now, Michelle, tell us about your city.
W: Thank you, Larry. Here’s my city. Louisville is my city. The first place I take the visitor from out of town is to the Highlands for shopping and night life. When I have delicious Asian food, I always go to the Zen Garden which provides wonderful all-vegetable dishes.
M: Wow, that’s interesting. Many people go for healthy food now.
W: You can say that again. If I want to go camping and fishing, I go to the Red River area. For complete quiet, I can hide away in my house with a good book from one of our public libraries.
M: That all sounds very exciting! I’m sure some of our listeners will include Louisville in their travel plan for their next holiday. Thank you, Michelle.
    (Text 10)
M: We’re glad to have Dr Garfield to talk to us today about dreams. Let me start by asking the first question. Does everyone dream?
W: It appears that everyone does. Mostly, when people say that they never dream, what they really mean is that they don’t remember their dreams or they don’t think their dreams are important. The reason behind is that they might have been made fun of as a child when they first reported their dreams or it was so frightening that they just turned off dreaming completely. The other day someone named Davis came to me and said that he used to be a great dreamer. But suddenly, he stopped having dreams. I asked him what had happened. It turned out that his brother died of a heart attack. And he never expected that such a terrible thing would happen to a young person. Generally, when there was some frightening event and to dream about it was too terrible, people prefer not to dream about it. Actually, the worst thing you can do is stop dreaming, because it means that the bad experience was too painful to even appear in dreams. As long as you’re dreaming about it and even if the dreams are frightening, your mind is working on it. My personal opinion about what dreams do is that they help us deal with our problems. We see certain patterns take place in dreams when a person is hurt deep inside, when a person is seriously ill or when a person has been really sad. If people turn off their dreams totally, it means they don’t allow themselves to even think about it.
