Here’s an astonishing statistic. Scientists have calculated the total amount of plastic ever made: 8.3 billion tonnes. Looked at another way, that’s as heavy as one billion elephants. And unbelievably, almost all of it has been made in the last 65 years.
So what’s the problem? Much plastic is in the form of packaging which is used just once and then thrown away. According to a major new study from the University of California, 9% of this is recycled, 12% is burned and 79% goes to landfill, where waste material is buried under the earth. And because most plastic doesn’t change back to a harmless natural state, once it’s in the ground, it stays there.
It’s a situation that has led the paper’s lead author, ecologist Dr Roland Geyer, to say that we are “rapidly heading towards ‘Planet Plastic’”. He believes that there’s already enough waste out there to cover the whole of Argentina.
The team behind this report also judge that eight million tonnes of plastic waste are escaping into the sea every year. This has caused concern that plastic is entering the food chain.
Of course, the reason why there’s so much plastic around is that it’s an amazingly useful material. We can’t get enough of it. It’s durable (耐久的) and adaptable, and is used for everything from yoghurt pots to spaceships. But it’s obviously this quality that makes it a problem. The only way to destroy plastic is to heat or burn it – although this has the side effect of harmful gases.
So what’s the alternative, other than using less plastic? Oceanographer Dr Erik van Sebille from Utrecht University says we’re facing a “tsunami (海啸)” of plastic waste, and that the global waste industry needs to “get its act together”.
Professor Richard Thompson, a biologist from Plymouth University, says it’s poor design that’s at fault. He says that if products are currently designed “with recyclability in mind”, they could be recycled around 20 times over.
58. What does Dr Roland Geyer mean by “Planet Plastic”?
A. Plastic will be applied in more ways across the world.
B. Plastic is so harmful that it will soon destroy the earth.
C. The globe might be covered with plastic waste someday.
D. Our planet goes hand in hand with the growth of plastic.
59. Why does the quality of being durable and adaptable make plastic a problem?
A. It is entering the food chain.
B. It has bad effect on many industries.
C. It produces harmful gases when it is burnt.
D. It is overused and it can’t be destroyed properly.
60. What can be a practical way to prevent “Planet Plastic”?
A. To make less use of plastic.
B. To use plastic over and over.
C. To find substitutes for plastic.
D. To make plastic harmless to us.

From Monday to Friday, most of us have an early start and a long day. By the time we’ve gone to bed and managed to fall asleep, we have been woken up by the alarm to do it all again. Come the weekend, and we’re totally worn out. We sleep in way past our usual wake-up time just to stay in sync (同步的) enough to start again on Monday.
Welcome to social jet lag (时差). That is the special phrase for the inequality between our working-week sleeping pattern, when our sleep times relate to our responsibilities, and the weekend, when we can wake when we choose. And depending on what type of person you are, the difference can be significant.
For night owls – those whose natural rhythm is to wake and go to bed later – there can be significant health-related issues, according to a recent study published by Taylor and Francis Group online. The study concludes the further the difference between working-week and weekend sleep times, the greater the health issues – including a higher risk of heart disease and other metabolic problems. And because so many jobs and tasks start early, night owls are effectively forced into harmonising with the early birds.
So what can night owls do: force themselves to join others by sacrificing their lie in (睡懒觉)? ‘It’s the worst thing you can do,’ says Professor Till Roenneberg, professor of chronobiology at the Institute of Medical Psychology at Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich. This is because people’s sleep pattern is half determined by genetics (遗传学). The other half is connected with their age and environment. Getting less sleep is unlikely to change and make you adapt to your genetic tendencies.
Our bodies evolved to function efficiently together with the rise and fall of the Sun. We should feel sleepy as the light fades into darkness. But modern life, with its artificial light and modern devices, such as computers and smartphones, means we have become different from what is usual. Now we are exposed to more light for longer periods of time, keeping our bodies awake longer. For night owls, who already tend to sleep later, this delays things even further.
One solution, beyond changing society’s early-start tendencies, is to readjust our body clock by controlling our exposure to light. By taking more sunlight in the morning and minimising the amount of artificial light we are exposed to in the evening – particularly on electronic devices – we can rebalance our bodies to feel sleepy earlier. It’s far from easy, but better that than losing your whole weekend to sleep.
61. Paragraph 1 is aimed at telling us that ______.
A. people are mostly kept busy on weekdays
B. most people like to sleep late on weekends
C. social jet lag leads to our constant anxiety
D. the majority of us suffer from social jet lag
62. The underlined part in Paragraph 3 actually means “______”.
A. being bird-lovers B. going to bed earlier
C. being early risers D. getting greater benefits
63. How can you readjust your biological clock?
A. By staying in total darkness in the evening.
B. By living a more natural life all day long.
C. By keeping yourself outdoors in the daytime.
D. By avoiding getting up too late at weekends.
64. Which can be the proper title for the passage?
A. Social jet lag B. Our body clock C. Sleep problems D. Natural rhythm

Reader question:
Please explain “sure fire” in this sentence: He is a sure fire Oscar nominee and has a real shot at winning.
My comments:
Here, an actor is compared to a sharpshooting rifle, a long-barreled gun good for long-distance shooting.
Sure fire or surefire or sure-fire is a combination of “sure”, as in sure and certain, and “fire”, as in fire a shot.
Surefire, therefore, means literally a good shot, a shot that is certain to hit the target.
In our example, the actor is considered sure fire or certain to be an Oscar nominee for his performance in a film and is thought to have a real chance of winning the Oscar Award.
Anyway, surefire is an American expression originally referring to sure-fire rifles. Merriam-Webster.com dates its first known use at 1846. EtymOnline.com says it had been popular by 1864. Both dates seem reasonable, as rifles enjoyed their prime before, during and after colonial (殖民的) times.
Eventually, rifles have fallen by the wayside, giving way to more powerful and more accurate weapons, but sure-fire, as an adjective, has lived on.
Here are two sure-fire examples in recent American media:
1. Here’s some news that will make you want to go Dutch (AA制). The cost of a date (约会) is on the rise, and Maryland is among the top 10 states where it’s the highest.
An August report by the Delaware-based financial news and opinion company has ranked Maryland the seventh most expensive state to go on a date, averaging at $209.33 per outing. New York came in at No. 1, with an average date costing around $300.
The list was compiled by calculating the average price of: a liter of wine in June 2018; two movie tickets in 2017; and the average cost of two restaurant dinners in 2016. It also considered the cost of goods, services, dining out, transportation, alcohol and taxes for each state.
Luckily, there are some outings that aren’t as expensive. For a date in Maryland, the website suggested taking a walk along the Ocean City boardwalk, which can be as expensive as you want to make it. But if you’re looking for a sure-fire cheaper option, you can always jump ship and start dating in another state entirely.
In North Dakota, the cost of dates averages $42, and South Dakota comes in at the lowest, at around $38 a date.

2. San Antonio Spurs legend (传奇人物) Manu Ginobili has only been retired a day, but there’s already a billboard up in San Antonio thanking the future Hall of Famer for his 16 years of contributions.
...
Ginobili decided to call it quits Monday afternoon after a successful career. The 41-year-old began his career way back in 1995 in Argentina, and he played in his native country and then Italy before finally joining the Spurs in 2002, though he was drafted in the second round of the 1999 NBA Draft.
Ginobili won his first of four NBA championships in 2003. The following year, Ginobili and Argentina shocked the world by winning the gold medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, marking the first time in 16 years Team USA didn’t take home gold. He’s one of just two players in basketball history to win an NBA title, EuroLeague title and Olympic gold medal.
From there, Ginobili continued to play a key role for the Spurs for the rest of his career, mostly as a dynamic bench player in support of longtime stars Tim Duncan and Tony Parker.
For his career, Ginobili averaged 13.3 points, 3.8 assists and 3.5 rebounds in 25.4 minutes per game during the regular season. Those numbers jumped to 14.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists in 27.9 minutes per game in the playoffs.
While those numbers aren’t mind-blowing, Ginobili is a sure-fire Hall of Famer for a variety of reasons.

Most teens need about 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night, but, unfortunately, many teens don’t get enough sleep.
Recent studies show that adolescent sleep patterns actually differ from those of adults or kids. During the teen years, the body’s biological clock is temporarily reset, telling a person to fall asleep later and wake up later. This change might be due to the fact that the brain hormone melatonin (褪黑激素) is produced later at night for teens than it is for kids and adults, which makes it harder for teens to fall asleep early.
These changes in the body’s circadian rhythm occur with a busy time in life. For most teens, the pressure to do well in school is stronger than when they were kids, and it’s harder to get by without studying hard. Teens also have other time demands – everything from sports to other extracurricular activities.
Early start times in some schools also might play a role in lost sleep. Teens who fall asleep after midnight may still have to get up early for school, meaning that they might squeeze in only 6 or 7 hours of sleep a night. A few hours of missed sleep a night may not seem like a big deal, but it can create a noticeable problem over time.
Lack of sleep affects everything from someone’s ability to pay attention in class to his or her mood. Experts find more than 25% of high school students fall asleep in class, and experts have tied lost sleep to poorer grades.
Lack of sleep is also linked to feelings like sadness, anxiety and depression. Sleep helps keep us energetic, too, by slowing the body’s systems to re-energize us for everyday activities.
Some researchers, parents, and teachers have suggested that middle- and high-school classes begin later in the morning to accommodate teens’ need for more sleep, but meanwhile you’ll have to make your own adjustments. Here are some things that may help you to sleep better:
●Going to bed at the same time each night signals to your body that it’s time to sleep. Waking up at the same time every day can also help establish sleep patterns. So try to stick as closely as you can to your sleep schedule, even on weekends.
●Don’t have drinks with stimulants (兴奋剂) like caffeine, after 4 p.m. And drinking alcohol in the evening can make a person restless and interrupt sleep.
●Keep away from violent, scary, or action movies or television shows right before bed — anything that might set your mind and heart racing. Reading books with involved or active plots may also keep you from falling or staying asleep.
●Studies show that people sleep best in a dark room that is slightly on the cool side. Close your curtains and turn down the thermostat (恒温器). Lots of noise can be a sleep turnoff, too.

According to a new study by a Chinese newspaper, many young Chinese people are forgetting how to write their traditional Chinese characters. It is quite common that most Chinese school children grow up remembering more than 3,000 Chinese characters. However, the study shows they seldom need to write them by hand and are forgetting these characters. Instead, young people today are using their mobile phones and computers to write in a system called “pinyin” on the key board. A list of characters then appears on the screen for the writer to pick out the right one. The report said 83% of the 2,072 respondents (调查对象) have problems writing characters, while 43% said they only write when they need to sign something.
The problem is that they often take up their pens and forget the characters. Chinese characters are the oldest writing system in use in the world. They date back over 3,000 years. University student Li Hanwei, 21, said, “I can remember the shape, but I can’t remember the strokes (笔划) when I need to write it. It’s a bit of a problem. ” The phenomenon is common in China as well as in Japan, where Chinese characters are also used in writing.

81. One possible version:
A study shows many Chinese people are forgetting how to write Chinese characters due to the fact that people seldom write them by hand and use “pinyin” system too often.
This phenomenon is rather common in our daily life. When writing something on paper, we may forget the exact strokes of some characters. Sometimes we can recall the shape of the character, but we just can’t write it down correctly.
With the rapid development of science and technology, we tend to rely too much on our electronic equipment. As a result, we are keeping fewer and fewer Chinese characters in mind.
As is known to all, Chinese is the oldest writing system in use today and we should protect it from dying out. Therefore, we ought to try using pens rather than computers or mobile phones when writing. Besides, doing more reading can also help us to memorize Chinese characters. (150词)

W: Not only have I made my bed, I’ve done the laundry and cooked dinner as well!
Text5
M: Nice car, Joanna. That’s the hottest car on the streets these days.
W: My parents got it for me as a graduation gift. They got a great deal on a new one that had never been driven before. Otherwise, they were going to get me the older model.
Text 6
M: What happened to the classroom, guys? I left for lunch, and when I came back, I expected the floor to be tidy.
W: We’re sorry, Mr. Johnson. We did try to clean it up right after you left.
M: It doesn’t look like it.
W: Well, the food came, and Ted spilled the soup on the floor. We tried to clean it up, but we didn’t
have a mop. We had fifty pieces of paper, but they couldn’t clean up all the soup.
M: It sounds like you had an interesting lunch. Never mind. Let’s get back to work, shall we?
Text 7
W: We’re planning a trip for right after we graduate. Any thoughts?
M: I’ve always wanted to go somewhere hot like Hawaii, I’d love to just lie on the beach, have a drink… just relax, although I suppose that staying in one place might get boring after a while. How about a trip through Europe?
W: To be honest, I kind of agree with you. If we were to go to the Bahamas, say, I wouldn’t complain. But Europe sounds more attractive.
M: Well, as it happens, I spoke with a bunch of our friends last night. All of them began by saying
the same thing we did about beaches and stuff. In the end, everyone agreed that they’d rather have a more diverse experience.
W: Well, I think we have our destination. Now we just need to get our plane tickets.
M: Hold your horses. We need to calculate the cost first.
Text 8
W: You were up pretty late last night, Sam.
M: Yeah, I’ve been burning the midnight oil recently. This is an important time for us.
W: I know. The entrance exams can determine where we’ll spend the next four years.
M: It’s not only that. I think my whole future depends on how hard I work. My parents want me to do well, and they have enough money for me to study abroad if I want. They have signed me up for the TOEFL and IELTS.
W: Three big tests, all in one month! You must be so stressed out.
M: I’m thinking of it more as an opportunity. More tests will open more doors for me in the future. Think of all the choices I’ll have!
W: That’s true, but right now, you seem very tired.
M: I am. But only three more days, and our entrance exam will be behind us.
W: I know. I can’t wait!
Text 9
W: Have you had a chance to look at the applications?
M: Yes, I have read all of them, and I think these four people would be perfect.
W: Let me see your list.
M: Here you go. Actually, we had so many good choices that I started out with seven names.
W: I see you chose Fred White and Betty Davidson. Those two were at the top of my list, too. Betty has so much experience in accounting.
M: I know. And Fred has worked in tax accounting for several years. They’re both good choices.
W: So, let’s definitely call them for an interview. What about Brenda Cox? She wasn’t on your list, but I thought she might be a good fit for the job.
M: She looks good on paper, and she’s taught at the Collins Business School for years. She doesn’t have much experience in management.
W: But don’t you think it would be nice to at least give her an interview?
M: Well, you’re the boss!
W: Great. Let’s set up the interviews for next week, then. I’m looking forward to having a new manager to oversee our finances.
M: Me, too.
Text 10
Hey, everybody. Here is your weather forecast for the weekend. I’m sure you’ve noticed it’s been a bit windy today. A fallen tree had been blocking the way on Third Street in downtown Seattle this afternoon. That wind will continue on through the next couple of days, unfortunately. We’re looking at a high of fifteen and a low of eleven through the night, with the weather getting colder tomorrow morning and through the mid-afternoon. We’ll have highs of fourteen and lows of six. Those temperatures will go up a few degrees by Sunday. We’re hoping that this wind will start to blow away some of these clouds you see here, so we can get a little more sunlight to warm us up a bit.
Check out our northern neighbors, though. Up in Canada, there is freezing rain affecting cities along the border, with reports of golf ball-sized bits of ice dropping out of the sky. We especially recommend residents from Vancouver to stay indoors.
Here is a picture of the San Francisco Bay. At least somebody has some nice weather! Too bad that’s in the south of the country. But those colorful leaves sure do make for a nice photo. And who knows? Maybe we’ll have some sunshine on the way.
