3.“It might have saved me a lot of money”, Mr. Chen sighed, “________ timely from the stock market this July”.
    A. did I withdraw B. should I withdraw
    C. have I withdrawn D. had I withdrawn
It might have saved me a lot of money可知,是对过去的虚拟,故从句用过去完成时,省略if,则把助动词had放在句首,故选D。

If he studied harder,he might pass the exam(如果他努力学习,他可能通过考试了)
1:If I were you,I would beat him.
例2:If he were here,I would beat him.
1:If he had money,he would buy a car.(如果他有钱,他会买辆车)此句中had为一般过去时动词,翻译为“有”
例2:If he had had money,he would have bought a car.(如果他那时有钱,他就会买辆车)
    此句中第一个had为过去完成时助动词,第二个had为have(有)的过去分词。
    3. 与将来事实相反的虚拟语气——主句用过去时,例:If it should rain, the game would be put off.(如果下雨,比赛会推迟)
    使用要点:if从句一定要加助动词should,if……should翻译为“万一”;

4.One of the true tests of leadership is the ability to recognize a problem ________ it becomes an emergency
    A. when B. before
    C. after D. unless
A. when当……时;B. before在……之前;C. after在……
之前就……”。
Mary had finished her homework before her mother returned.
The man almost knocked me down before he saw me.
They worked day and night about three days before everything returned to normal.
Before I could get in a word, he had measured me.
She left the company before I could have a word with her.
I had hardly sat down before the bell rang.
Time passed quickly and three months went by before Aqiao knew it.
常与will或would连用。
I would die before I would tell. I would / will die before I surrender .
Do it now before you forget.
I will write it down before I forget it .
    8. 用于句型“it was +时间段+ before …”
It was three days before he came back.
    9. 用于句型“it was not long +时间段+ before …”
It was not long before he sensed the danger of the position .
    10. 用于句型“it will be(not )+时间段+ before…”

    A. wouldn't B. didn't
    C. hadn' t D. hasn't

7.You can’t imagine how excited we were ________ that our schoolmates had won the first place in National Robot Competition.
    A. learning B. having learned
    C. to be learning D. to learn
be excited to do sth做某事很兴奋,这里是感叹句,被感叹的词是excited,所以how +形容词 +主语+be to do,故选D。

He said he would meet me at the station. She thought she would have to ask someone for help.
Pirates would bury gold in a cave.
We would take a walk along the river.
Would you like to come to my party?
Would you mind coming with us?

    Moving to Orange County
If you're thinking of moving to Orange County, with its wealth of sandy beaches, wineries and tourist attractions then there’re several things that you’ll need to know.
    Visas for the US
The US has a number of options, and if you are relocating due to work commitments or family ties, you’ll be alongside the majority of applicants.
A green card holder, for instance, can apply for an immigration visa for a spouse(配偶)or (unmarried) child. A US employer can apply on behalf of a non-national person, and there are five preference categories for companies sponsoring immigration visas, the majority of which require exceptional skills, master’s training or experience of a particular profession. If you are being sponsored by an employer, your spouse and any child under the age of 21 can apply for immigration visas alongside you.
Temporary worker visas, on the other hand, are typically easier, but still not necessarily easy, to obtain and allow for limited stays.
    Finding accommodation
The three largest cities in the county are Anaheim, an industrial center, Santa Ana,10 miles from the coast with a perfect safety record, and Irvine, an wealthy planned city with a number of highly regarded schools. If you’re looking for a metropolitan lifestyle, expect to pay an average of 1,600 USD in rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the city center, rising to 2,900 USD a month for a family-size, three-bedroom apartment; an approximate 600 USD premium(溢价)on similar apartments outside of the city center.
If you would like to settle outside of a city, there are a number of suburbs in Orange County with plenty to offer young professionals and families. Perhaps one of the most renowned is Newport Beach, noted as one of the cleanest beaches in the county and famous for its many restaurants and fantastic schools. If you’re looking for an inland town, Aliso Viejo is an excellent option. This compact(紧凑的)town is easy to navigate and is ideal for young families.
    36. If you want to get a US immigration visa, you must meet one of the requirements that ________.
    A. you should have an unmarried child
    B. your employer should be a non-national person
    C. your spouse should be a lawful permanent resident
    D. you should be qualified for five immigrant visa preference categories
    37. It can be inferred that finding accommodation in Orange County depends on ________.
    A. a settler’s sponsor B. a settler’s professional level
    C. a settler’s company location D. a settler’s needs and the type of lifestyle

A green card holder, for instance, can apply for an immigration visa for a spouse(配偶)or (unmarried) child.
If you’re looking for a metropolitan lifestyle, expect to以及最后一段If you would like to settle outside of a city, there are a number of suburbs in Orange County with plenty to offer young professionals and families.

    B
While famous foreign architects are invited to lead the designs of landmark buildings in China such as the new CCTV tower and the National Center for the Performing Arts, many excellent Chinese architects are making great efforts to take the center stage.
Their efforts have been proven fruitful. Wang Shu, a 49-year-old Chinese architect, won the 2012 Pritzker Architecture Prize—which is often referred to as the Nobel Prize in architecture—on February 28. He is the first Chinese citizen to win this award.
Wang serves as head of the Architecture Department at the China Academy of Art (CAA). His office is located at the Xiangshan campus of the university in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. Many buildings on the campus are his original creations.
The style of the campus is quite different from that of most Chinese universities. Many visitors were amazed by the complex architectural space and abundant building types. The curves(曲线) of the buildings perfectly match the rise and fall of hills, forming a unique view.
Wang collected more than 7 million abandoned bricks of different ages. He asked the workers to use traditional techniques to make the bricks into walls, roofs and corridors. This creation attracted a lot of attention thanks to its mixture of modern and traditional Chinese elements.
Wang’s works show a deep understanding of modern architecture and a good knowledge of traditions. Through such a balance, he had created a new type of Chinese architecture, said Tadao Ando, the winner of the 1995 Pritzker Prize.
Wang believes traditions should not be sealed in glass boxes at museums. “That is only evidence that traditions once existed,” he said.
“Many Chinese people have a misunderstanding of traditions. They think tradition means old things from the past. In fact, tradition also refers to the things that have been developing and that are still being created,” he said.
“Today, many Chinese people are learning Western styles and theories rather than focusing on Chinese traditions. Many people tend to talk about traditions without knowing what they really are,” said Wang.
The study of traditions should be combined with practice. Otherwise, the recreation of traditions would be artificial and empty, he said.
    38. What impressed visitors to the CAA Xiangshan campus most?
    A. Its hilly environment. B. Its large size.
    C. Its unique style. D. Its diverse functions.
    39. What made Wang’s architectural design a success?
    A. The mixture of different shapes.
    B. The balance of East and West.
    C. The use of popular techniques.
    D. The harmony of old and new.
    40. What should we do about Chinese traditions according to Wang?
    A. Spread them to the world. B. Preserve them at museums.
    C. Teach them in universities. D. Recreate them in practice.
C 39. D 40. D

    C
Everything about nuclear energy seems terrifically big: the cost, construction and decommissioning—and the fears of something going badly wrong.
The future, however may well be much smaller. Dozens of companies are working on a new generation of reactors that, they promise, can deliver nuclear power at lower cost and reduced risk.
These small-scale plants will on average generate between 50MW and 300MW of power compared with the 1,000MW-plus from a conventional reactor. They will draw on modular manufacturing techniques that will reduce construction risk, which has plagued larger-scale projects. Supporters believe these advanced modular reactors (AMRs)—most of which will not be commercial until the 2030s—are critical if atomic power is to compete against the rapidly falling costs of solar and wind.
“The physics hasn’t changed. It’s about much cleverer design that offers much-needed flexibility in terms of operation,” said Tim Stone, long-term industry adviser and chairman of Nuclear risk Insurers, which insures nuclear sites in the UK.
Since the Fukushima meltdown in Japan in 2011, safety fears have threatened nuclear power. But the biggest obstacle today is economic. In western Europe, just three plants are under construction: in the UK at Hinkley point C in Somerset; at Flamanville in France; and at Olkiluoto in Finland. All involve the European Pressurized Reactor technology of EDF that will be used at Hinkley Point. All are running years late and over budget. In the US, the first two nuclear projects under way for the past 30 years are also blowing through cost estimates.
The UK, which opened the world’s first commercial nuclear reactor in 1956, is one of the few western nations committed to renewing its ageing fleet to ensure energy security and meet tough carbon reduction targets. It is seen as a proving ground, by many in the industry, of nuclear power’s ability to restore confidence.
However, the country’s agreement with EDF to build two units at Hinkley Point—which together will generate 3.2GW of electricity—has come under severe criticism over its cost. The government is looking at different funding models but said it still sees nuclear power as vital to the country’s future energy mix. Small reactors, it believes, have the potential to generate much-needed power from the 2030s.
A nuclear sector deal, unveiled last month, promised up to £56m in funding for research and development into AMRs and attracted interest of start-ups from around the world. The government hopes the funding will give the UK a lead in the global race to develop these technologies, helping to provide energy security while also creating a multibillion-dollar export market for British engineering companies.
    41. Which of the following is true about the advanced modular reactors (AMRs)?
    A. AMRs produce more power than traditional reactors
    B. Small in scale, AMRs rose more safety risks
    C. So far, most AMRs have not been put into use yet
    D. Governments prefer energy of solar and wind to that of AMRs
    42. In paragraph 5, the author mentions the plants in Western Europe and the US to ________.
    A. prove that nuclear power has been threatened by safety concern.
    B. show that the construction of nuclear power plants cost more that the budget available.
    C. indicate the construction of nuclear plants are slow in speed.
    D. point out that most power plants have adopted the latest nuclear technology.
    43. What can be inferred from the passage?
    A. Some people have lost confidence in the development of nuclear plants
    B. The UK government seeks to reduce the negative impact of nuclear power on its economy.
    C. The plan to build two power plants in Hinkley Point has been deserted
    D. a kind costs for small modular reactors would be higher relative to large nuclear reactors.
    44. Which of the following can serve as the best title of this passage?
    A. Britain counts on nuclear energy to keep lights on
    B. Traditional nuclear plants boom with mini reactors
    C. Nuclear’s share of power generation remain stead
    D. Nuclear power looks to shrink its way to success
C 42. B 43. A 44. D

    D
I was puzzled! Why was this old woman making such a fuss about an old copse(树丛)which was of no use to anybody? She had written letters to the local paper, even to a national, protesting about a projected by-pass to her village, and, looking at a map, the route was nowhere near where she lived and it wasn’t as if the area was attractive. I was more than puzzled, I was curious.
The enquiry into the route of the new by-pass to the village was due to take place shortly, and I wanted to know what it was that motivated her. So it was that I found myself knocking on a cottage door, being received by Mary Smith and then being taken for a walk to the woods.
“I’ve always loved this place,” she said, “it has a lot of memories for me, and for others. We all used it. They called it ‘Lovers lane’. It’s not much of a lane, and it doesn’t go anywhere important, but that’s why we all came here. To be away from people, to be by ourselves.” she added.
It was indeed pleasant that day and the songs of many birds could be heard. Squirrels watched from the branches, quite bold in their movements, obviously few people passed this way and they had nothing to fear. I could imagine the noise of vehicles passing through these peaceful woods when the by-pass was built, so I felt that she probably had something there but as I hold strong opinions about the needs of the community over-riding the opinions of private individuals, I said nothing. The village was quite a dangerous place because of the traffic especially for old people and children, their safety was more important to me than an old woman’s strange ideas.
“Take this tree,” she said pausing after a short while. “To you it is just that, a tree. Not unlike many others here.” She gently touched the bark, “Look here, under this branch, what can you see?”
“It looks as if someone has done a bit of carving with a knife.” I said after a cursory inspection.
“Yes, that’s what it is!” she said softly.
She went on, “He had a penknife with a spike for getting stones from a horse’s hoof, and I helped him to carve them. We were very much in love, but he was going away, and could not tell me what he was involved in the army. I had guessed of course. It was the last evening we ever spent together, because he went away the next day, back to his Unit.”
Mary Smith was quiet for a while, then she sobbed. “His mother showed me the telegram. ‘Sergeant R Holmes Killed in action in the invasion of France.’…”
“I had hoped that you and Robin would one day get married.” she said, “He was my only child, and I would have loved to be a Granny, they would have been such lovely babies’—she was like that!”
“Two years later she too was dead. Pncumonia(肺炎), following a chili on the chest’ was what the doctor said, but I think it was an old fashioned broken heart. A child would have helped both of us.”
There was a further pause. Mary Smith gently caressed the wounded tree, just as she would have caressed him. “And now they want to take our tree away from me.” Another quiet sob, then she turned to me. “I was young and pretty then, I could have had anybody, I wasn’t always the old woman you see here now. I had everything I wanted in life, a lovely man, health and a future to look forward to.”
She paused again and looked around. The breeze gently moved through the leaves with a sighing sound. “There were others, of course, but no one can match my Robin!” she said strongly. “And now I have nothing—except the memories this tree holds. If only I could get my hands on that awful man who writes in the paper about the value of the road they are going to build where we are standing now, I would tell him. Has he never loved, has he never lived, does he not know anything about memories? We were not the only ones, you know, I still meet some who came here as Robin and I did. Yes, I would tell him!”
I turned away, sick at heart.

Mother of all relationships should not be overbearing
When a controlling mother finds that her rebellious son wants to free himself from her clutches and start his own life, what happens? Well, she might just lose it and swallow him.
This happened in Bao, the Chinese-centric film that claimed Best Animated Short at the 9lst Oscar Awards. Directed by China-born Canadian director Domee Shi, Bao tells the story of a Chinese steamed bun, or baozi, that comes to life and cries like a baby just before a woman is about to eat it. The lonely Chinese housewife, whose husband is always busy with work, regards the baby baozi as her substitute son. As time passes, it grows up and decides to leave home with its blonde girlfriend. That’s exactly when the controlling mom swallows it up whole out of frustration.
The short film actually reflects the condition of the director herself and of most Chinese families.
In China, "widow-style childcare" describes many Chinese mothers’ ending in recent years. The term describes a bitter social reality: Once the child is born, the father disappears. He would work, drink all night, or do anything except help his wife take care of their child. As a result, the mother would throw herself completely into raising the child, without having a life of her own. She needs to know where her child is every moment, what he or she is doing whenever possible— even if the child has attained adulthood. She can be bossy, anxious and seemingly unreasonable. She represents many Chinese mothers of today.
Believe me, such an unnatural relationship can harm both mother and child. When one grows up, he or she may find it difficult to fit in with society. As for the mother, she would feel lonely as long as her child is not around, which may lead to depression and other psychological problems.
Then what is the best model for mothers and children to get along? I’d proudly introduce my mom. When I was a child, she cared for my safety, studies and daily life like every other mother. But her love wouldn’t drown me. After I grew up and went to college, she wouldn’t interfere in my life—because she had already taught me to distinguish good from bad. I don’t need to worry about her as she has her own life—loves yoga, cooking, and even started to learn English when she was 40. Now she hangs out with her foreign friends from time to time just like teenagers.
I believe this is a healthy mother-child relationship—as the two are independent individuals. Indeed, the mother needs to take care of her child. But instead of providing the fish, it is more important to teach one how to fish. Thus when the child grows up, both have their own life, and do not become attached to each other. A mother is not supposed to control her child for life. By doing so, she would only be pushing her son or daughter away from her because nobody wants to live in a prison made of love.
But the film has a happy ending. The woman finds that it was only a nightmare. I do hope that all mothers who lean too heavily on their children wake up from this dream, so that they would live happily ever after.

Many linguists warn that the number of languages which are much more than a way of communication is declining dramatically, with two thirds of the world’s population speaking dominant languages like Chinese and English.
Some authoritative researches show that the globalization is the main reason accounting for the language losing. During the process, English as a global language is widely learnt and spoken to avoid the possible misunderstanding or conflicts. Another remarkable reason comes from the development of tourism. Superb systems of communication by air, sea and land make it easier for us to visit each other’s countries, affecting the local people’s and the visitors’ languages alike.
As we know, a language, oral or written, is the representative of a nation’s fantastic and brilliant culture, which reflects the characteristic root of a nation. Language dying gradually out will surely mean a rootless culture. Flowers with different colors make a garden more beautiful. Thus, effective measures must be taken to deal with the loss of varieties of language and culture.
