第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Wanted: A Personal Assistant
I’m a very busy woman, looking for an assistant to help me with certain important tasks. This is not your average assistant job. What I’m looking for is someone to take care of some of my more personal business so that I may focus on my true passion: grocery shopping. Please apply if and only if you are willing and able to accomplish the following tasks:
Work
I would love to have a nine-to-five job. However, I find sitting in an office all day unbearable. An ideal assistant would secure a high-paying office job and excel in that setting, even going so far as to eagerly accept every invitation to after-work drinks.
Go on family vacations
I love my family, especially when I don’t have to spend time with them. Thus, I will require my employee to attend all family vacations in my place. Since I’ll miss out on spending time with my nephews, a good assistant will live-stream (直播) them for me the entire time while discreetly muting the live-stream whenever they start fighting.
Exercise
I am determined to get in better shape but find working out exhausting and tiring. The right candidate will exercise for a minimum of an hour every day and allow me to reap the benefits of his or her vigorous activity.
Eat
Just kidding—I love eating!
Date
I’m looking for love but find dating intimidating. Ideally, my employee will get a drink with a potential mate so he or she can do the tiresome work of getting to know someone and deciding whether I’ll like him. If the romantic candidate advances past a third date, I’d be willing to step in and proceed with the relationship from there, excluding birthdays, holidays, and other high-pressure situations.
Have a baby
I’m eager to have a child, but being pregnant and giving birth seems hard. Likewise, raising a child seems horrible. I’d prefer to spend an hour or two with my child each day while someone else tackles the incredible responsibility of childrearing. Once my child turns 18, I will happily assume all parenting duties, excluding any financial obligations.
21. What is the author truly interested in?
A. Spending vacations. B. Going shopping.
C. Dating someone. D. Raising children.
22. The personal assistant needs to do the following things for the author EXCEPT ________.
A. working out. B. going to work.
C. accompanying families. D. eating delicious food.
23. What do you think is the purpose of the passage?
A. To warn. B. To inform. C. To amuse. D. To advertise.
B
I said, “Papi, let me finish school.” None of his other daughters completed more than three grades. “I still can do my chores,” I told him. “Pay for me to finish school.”
He dug his boot into the dry earth of Quanajuato, the state he never left in his entire life. But he still was the smartest man in our village. He read books about Egypt and knew how to handwrite, unlike my mother, who never had an education.
“Why do you want to return to school?” he said, lowering his eyes to me. “So you can meet a man, marry, and quit? You want me to pay for that?”
“No, Papi,” I said. “I won’t marry in school and I promise I’ll graduate.”
The wind whistled through the trees. My father saw a fisherman with a pole bent over the riverbank. I said urgently, “Papi,” and I almost grabbed his thick brown wrist. In the country, my father would stop and talk with any stranger, no matter what he was doing. He would talk about the harvest, the weather, the family, but mostly, he would listen.
He turned, making his way to the fisherman. I followed behind him in my open-toed shoes, carefully picking my steps. I knew I had lost his attention and I searched around me for something to fill the time I would spend waiting. But there was nothing and nobody.
“Buenos dias,” my father said to the fisherman.
I took my seat ten feet from them. The two men stared across the lake and talked. Their voices were accompanied with the wind. I daydreamed.
“Marta, come here,” my father called to me.
I lifted myself up and walked very slowly toward them without lifting my feet off the ground.
“Marta,” my father said, “I have asked Don Toms what he thinks about your promise.”
I stared at this fisherman, this stranger, and then back at my father with wide eyes.
“I told him about your promise to stay single, and he told me—let her go.”
The fisherman looked down at his worn shoes. “If you want it,” he said to the earth beneath his feet.
Later, I became Father’s only daughter to complete high school education, and the only one to leave his house unmarried.
24. The author spoke to her father to ________.
A. share her school life B. beg for her school fee
C. learn about her sisters’ study D. complain about the housework
25. The author felt ________ when her father went over to the fisherman.
A. ashamed B. tired C. angry D. helpless
26. Why did the author’s father talk with the fisherman?
A. To offer help. B. To talk about harvest.
C. To ask for advice. D. To get away from the author.
27. The last paragraph suggests that the author _______.
A. kept her word B. missed her father
C. regretted the decision D. lived a comfortable life

There are many programs for high school students today that help isolated teenagers cope with loneliness. However, loneliness is not only an issue for teens but also an important and rarely acknowledged one in the elderly.
In Britain, Tracey Crouch was appointed to be the first Minister of Loneliness in order to address the issues caused by loneliness. This is the first time that such a position has been created.
In Britain, there are around 9 million people who say they are lonely frequently. In Germany, a study conducted by Ruhr University Bochum found that 20 percent of people over the age of 85 felt lonely, and 14 percent of those between age 45 and 65 felt socially isolated. In the United States, more than 25 percent of the people live alone, and more than 50 percent are unmarried.
Isolation is generally associated with cardiovascular disease, depression, obesity, and anxiety. Additionally, the stress from loneliness can cause your cells to change on a molecular(分子)level that reduces its abilities to defend your body against diseases. In fact, doctors believe having feelings of loneliness is equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes per day in regard to its impact on health.
In Britain, the new Minister of Loneliness will help establish government policies on the issue and fund charities to devote their efforts to aiding loneliness. There are charities that link lonely seniors to high school students in order to give them a line of communication whenever they feel lonely.
The possibilities for the new Minister of Loneliness are endless. For example, she can provide education services to household businesses so that they can identify lonely customers if they see one. Loneliness fits into the category of being a social issue that must be monitored by the entire community in order to help those in need. Hence, government involvement in medical services and care for seniors and others is essential for happy seniors.
28.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. UK becomes the capital of loneliness. B. Loneliness only affects old people’s life.
C. Many teenagers suffer from loneliness. D. UK appoints Minister of Loneliness.
29.How did the writer develop the third paragraph?
A. By listing some specific numbers.
B. By giving examples of lonely people.
C. By pointing out similarities and differences.
D. By comparing different cultures in different countries.
30.What does the underlined words in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Relevant. B. Equal. C. Opposite. D. Superior.
31.What will the Minister of Loneliness do?
A. Do housework for lonely people. B. Develop friendships with the elderly.
C. Help fund charities to aid lonely people. D. Communicate with depressed school students.
D
Every year migratory(迁徙的) bats travel from Mexico to Bracken Cave, where they spend the summer consuming insects that would otherwise hungrily eat common food crops. But the bats have been showing up far earlier than they did two decades ago.
In a study, scientists at Rothamsted Research, an agricultural laboratory in England, used radar data from 160 U.S. weather stations to analyze activity in the Texas bat colony from 1995 through 2017. They discovered the creatures were leaving their winter quarters in Mexico earlier and reproducing sooner. They were also astonished to find increasing numbers of bats overwintering(过冬) at Bracken Cave instead of heading back to their cold weather quarters in Mexico. Overwintering is a sign that warmer temperatures change the bats’ annual rhythms, Rothamsted biologist Phillip Stepanian says.
A separate study of migratory bats in Indiana, published last year, found that temperature variations affected arrival and departure times—likewise hinting at the potential influence of climate change. Joy O’Keefe, a biology professor at Indiana State University and co-author of that study, says early arrival at their summer habitats could expose these bats to cold snaps(寒流), and they could freeze to death.
Joy O’Keefe and her colleagues also found that changing bat migration times can also clash with rainfall patterns. Many insects that bats eat breed in seasonal lakes and puddles. If the bats arrive too early to benefit from summer rainfall and the resulting abundance of insects, they may struggle to feed their pups(幼崽) or skip reproduction altogether, O’Keefe says. She fears this shift could cause Midwestern bats to decrease toward extinction, which would be bad news for humans. “Declines in bat populations could have severe effects for crop success,” she says, adding that bats also “control significant disease vectors, such as mosquitoes.”
However, scientists are not certain that climate change alone is causing the Bracken Cave bat colony to migrate earlier. They have found a direct link between seasonal temperatures and bird migration, but bats are also influenced by factors such as changes in wind speed and direction. And there are other complications. “Bats are mysterious little animals that move mostly at night and are difficult to observe and track,” Stepanian says. “We have this conceptual picture of what might be happening, but really tying it to the cause is the next step.”
32. Scientists at Rothamsted Research found that _________.
A. bats prefer colder weather B. bats delay their reproduction
C. warming affects bat migration D. radar can be used to observe bats
33. Joy O’Keefe discovered that _________.
A. bats are used to living in rainfall seasons B. bats’ earlier migration might harm farming
C. insects’ reproduction helps to spread disease D. insects shortage makes bats reproduce earlier
34. What does the last paragraph want to tell us?
A. Wind speed and direction affect bats. B. It is difficult to observe and track bats.
C. Climate change makes bats migrate earlier. D. Further research on the cause is necessary.
35. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Bats’ habitats B. Endangered bats
C. Bats’ schedule D. Bats, our good friends

Have you ever had headache during a test? Have you ever been too concerned about something that you even can’t sleep at night? If so, then you know that stress is. Too much stress can result in angry, depression and other related problems, which we need to take them seriously.
However, not all stress was harmful to you. Some kinds of stress can help you getting things done better, like when you are running towards the finishing line or when you are asked to deliver a speech to your class. Stress sometimes can push you to make full preparation for a test.

书面表达
Dear Jim,
I am glad to know that you have joined your school’s calligraphy club. The calligraphy piece I sent to you was written by myself. I really hope you will like it.
The Chinese characters on the piece are “天道酬勤” (Tian Dao Chou Qin), meaning “Hard work pays off.” It is a well-known Chinese idiom, widely adopted as a motto by Chinese people. There is a similar calligraphy piece hanging in the study at my home, which was written by my grandfather. He gave it to me when I started to learn calligraphy at age six in hopes that I would practise it often and learn it well. You see now my efforts have paid off. I hope it can serve as an encouragement to you at all times. I wrote this piece in the calligraphic style of my favorite calligrapher, Yan Zhenqing, a renowned master of the Tang Dynasty. His style is Kaishu, a standard script, suitable for beginners. I guess maybe it is the style that you are practising.
I know it is not easy to learn Chinese calligraphy. If you have any problems during your study, I would be happy to help you. I sincerely hope you enjoy learning Chinese calligraphy!
Yours,
Li Hua

The best approach of reducing stress is to have a balanced life. If you get enough sleep, eat proper, take more exercise and have enough fun time, you may feel less stressed.

书面表达
Dear Jim,
I am glad to know that you have joined your school’s calligraphy club.
Yours,
Li Hua
