After an old lady from Radviliškis, Lithuania got too sick to live on her own, she was admitted to a hospital. Sadly, all of her remaining relatives were scattered(分散) all over the world, so nobody could take care of the pets she was forced to leave behind. While authorities had spent months searching for ways to save her animals, “Vyšnių sodas,” a rescue shelter from Vilnius, Lithuania, stepped up. After they arrived, one of the animals, a little dog named Pluto, was clearly the one who needed help the most.
Pluto had lost a lot of weight. “Suffering from Mange(兽疥癣), his body was reduced to skin and bones. His eyes were hopeless, filled only with endless pain.”
“Upon arriving at our shelter, Pluto appeared to have been completely given up,” Žukauskaitė added. “He didn’t want to get up for anything. He wasn’t eating, and was doing his business right under himself.”
The vets cleaned him, removing the dirty from his skin. The first procedure Pluto received took 5 hours. “Still, he was feeling miserable and his burning skin was being treated a few times each day. Eventually, because of the Mange infection, Pluto had to be isolated without the possibility of going out for a walk.”
“The pup had been going through living hell for 3 months. After the isolation, he had to relearn how to walk.” But that was only the half of his remaining troubles. “Pluto was afraid of everything and everyone.”
“It took six months before Pluto gathered the courage to step outside,” Žukauskaitė said. “His first steps were very tough for him. He was so afraid, even the grass under his feet creeped him out.”
“Thanks to the endless patience and love provided by our staff, however, Pluto started socializing. As he introduced himself to his surroundings and the other dogs, Pluto started eating more, too. Even though he’s cautious around people, he has regained most of his weight and we find Pluto playing with other dogs more and more.”[来源:学科网]

Rain beat against the window, matching my mood. I should have known that my new job at the hospital was too good to be true. Throughout the day, rumors (传言) warned that the newest employee from each department would be laid off. I was the newest one in the training department.
My boss appeared. “You probably know we’re cutting back,” he said. “Administration wants us to offer outplacement classes to help those employees find other jobs, showing them how to act in an interview, for example.” “Fine,” I answered unwillingly, not knowing what else to say.
I decided to go home early that day. In the hall, I met the lady who brought us cookies every Friday. She was a little woman with gray hair. Only her head and the top of her green apron were visible over the cart (小车) loaded with cleaning supplies. At least she had a job!
At the final meeting, laid-off workers formed a line at the door. A colleague whispered, “I can’t believe our Cookie Lady is being laid off. We’ll miss her as much as we’ll miss her cookies.” When the colleague spoke to her in Spanish, I knew my classes would be useless for her and I realized how much better off was than this poor woman.
I decided to do something for her. I wrote to a newspaper expressing how I felt about the unselfishness of the Cookie Lady who needed a job. A few days later, my article appeared in the newspaper and the Cookie Lady was allowed to stay in her position. On the same day, I received a letter, which seemed so unlikely that I read it twice. “An editor of a local magazine likes your piece and wants you to call her next time you’re looking for work …”

A new railway design is allowing the latest high-speed rail line to pass through national natural reserves while causing only minor effect to local wildlife.
The Xi’an-Chengdu high-speed rail is the first bullet train to cut through the Qinling Mountains, in Shaanxi province, which are home to many rare wild animals including the giant panda, golden monkey, crested ibis and golden takin.
It is one of three major habitats for the wild giant panda, with about 345 of China’s 1,864 wild giant pandas living there, according to the fourth National Survey on Giant Pandas released in 2015. The railway will also pass through a major Tianhuashan Mountain reserve, a giant panda habitat.
"When researching the railway route, we avoided laying tracks more than 1,500 meters above sea level, where the majority of wildlife gathers," said Lai Wenhong, an engineer from the China Railway First Survey and Design Institute Group, who is in charge of the railway’s environmental design.
More than 90 percent of the railway through the Qinling Mountains is tunnels and bridges, said Liu Shuangjin, general chief designer of the line’s Shaanxi section from the China Railway First Survey and Design Institute Group.
"The advantage of tunnels is to reduce vibration(震动) when a train passes by," Lai said.
The average depth of the tunnels is 400 meters, and the deepest is 1,000 meters. Bridges are constructed to link tunnels. Protective things have been placed at the mouths of tunnels in the Qinling Mountains to keep wild animals from falling. During operation, trains are forbidden from using horns in wildlife habitats.
The line also passes through the Yangxian county reserve, home to crested ibis, a rare bird. The 4-meter-high mesh(网状物) on the sides of bridges higher than 10 meters will prevent the birds from flying into the path of trains, which is safer for the birds and the trains.
    32. The Xi’an-Chengdu high-speed rail passes through the following reserves except __________.
    A. the Qinling Mountain reserve B. the Yangxian county reserve
    C. the Taihang Mountain reserve D. the Tianhuashan Mountain reserve
    33. What animals is the Tianhuashan Mountain reserve set up mainly for?
    A. The golden monkey. B. The elephant.
    C. The crested ibis. D. The giant panda.
    34. Why are so many tunnels built on the Xi’an-Chengdu high-speed rail?
    A. To protect endangered wildlife. B. To lower the cost of construction.
    C. To reduce the distance of the line. D. To connect different bridges.
    35. What’s the best title of the passage?
    A. The railway’s environmental design is important C. Rail design keeps wildlife safe
    B. The Xi’an-Chengdu rail is under construction D. More national reserves are set up

How to Relieve Your Pet’s Separation Anxiety During the Holidays
The holidays are festive for humans, but for animals they can be full of anxiety. Anytime pets are separated from the person they’re most bonded to, they’re likely to experience anxiety. Separation anxiety is a very serious disorder characterized by extreme emotional and behavioral reactions. ___36___Therefore, it should not be taken lightly. Here’s valuable insight from an animal behavior expert.
    Ÿ _____37____.
Destructive behavior—clawing at the door, chewing through window screens, chewing up the couch.
    Ÿ Constant barking, meowing, howling
Ÿ Refusing to eat or drink when left alone
Dealing with a mild case of separation anxiety
Try counterconditioning(对抗条件反射作用), in which you associate a bad thing (which in this case is your leaving), with something they enjoy, like a treat. “___38___” says an expert.
A little background noise might help as well—try leaving the TV or stereo on. If you go with music, something may be created specifically to calm pets, whether it be a dog, cat, or bird.
    Managing a moderate case
If treats, music, or the TV won’t do the trick, desensitize(使不敏感;使麻木) your pet to your leaving. You do this by disassociating your normal signs of leaving from your actual leaving. The expert says, “Pick up your car keys, then sit on the couch to watch TV.___39__”
By leaving the house calmly and confidently, you help your pet realize that leaving is normal—you might do the same thing with a child anxious about being left at pre-school. When you come home, try to ignore your pet for the first few minutes—again, you’re trying to normalize leaving and returning.
Ease your pet’s moderate to severe case of separation anxiety
____40__, you should consider investing in professional help.
    A. Reasons for separation anxiety.
    B. Common signs of separation anxiety
    C. Put on your coat, then go wash the dishes.
    D. At its most extreme, it can result in death.
E.Though the suggestions above are useful,
    F. If your animal isn’t responding to any of the previously suggested tips,
    G. Your animal will gradually learn that what he feared actually leads to good things.

As far as I’m concerned, diligence is much important than intelligence. Firstly, as known to all, a knife will not be sharp if not sharpen regularly. The same is true with studying. In other words, unless you don’t study hard and only depend on your intelligence, perhaps you can get some achievements and stand out in the beginning. But it is no doubt that you will fall behind those that work hard in the end. Secondly, most great people, like Edison, were not smart at the school, but they get lots of achievements through hard work. 第二节 书面表达
    One possible version:
    Dear Lisa,
How is everything going? Knowing that you are confused at what “suiyuebuju, shijieruliu” means, here I’m thrilled to explain it to you.
The saying “suiyuebuju, shijieruliu”,means time stops for no one and the seasons keep changing. People often use it to express how time flies, so we should make good use of our time to better ourselves and make plans for the coming year.
As a Senior Three student, I am to study harder and make progress in my study . To begin with, I should bury myself in my study and read more books to enrich my knowledge. In addition, I should learn to summarize from every exam. In the end, my mental and physical health ranks first, so I will continue working out regularly. Only by reviewing the past and planning the future well will I be admitted to a key university.
    Wish you good luck .
    Yours heartily,
    Li Hua

W:I’m sending a letter to my friend by airmail. lt's not insured or anything, but how do I address it, again?
M: Well, obviously you have to write the name of the person or business in the center of the envelope.
    W: Okay. What next?
M: On the second line, you write the address you are sending it to. (6) Good, like that.
W: I got it now. On the last line, I write the city it's going to and the district, right?
M: Don't forget to write the return address in the upper-left corner in the same manner as the sending address.
W: Now I just need to get a proper postage stamp. (7)

    Text 7
W: Stan, you've already finished your essay? I've been working on mine for two weeks, and I'll need another week before it's finished. (8)
M: I know, Jenny, (9) it's a huge project researching, thinking of an argument and then finding details that show the argument is true.
W: That part only took me one week. But writing and rewriting, and then deleting and
    writing again.that's killing me! (9)[来源:学_科_网Z_X_X_K]
M: That part didn’t bother me.
    W: What's your secret? (10)
M: I write an outline: a basic plan of what I’m going to say. (10) And then I fill it in with topics for each paragraph. After that, I put notes about what details to include.
    W: That sounds hard.
M: It's easier than you think, and when it's time to write, everything goes really smoothly. I have an outline from last semester that I could show you, if you're interested.

    Text 8
W: Are you packing for another trip?
M: Yeah. On Saturday, I'm flying to Toronto.
W: Is this another engineering conference for work? (11)
M: No. I'm meeting with friends. But I earned so many miles by traveling for work that the ticket was free.
W: That's impressive. You fly a lot. I've only been on a plane a few times.
M: Really? Don't you travel with your dad?
W: No. He travels a lot because he is a banker, and he has an office in Japan. When he's working in New York, we take the train to visit him. (12)
M: Oh, I thought you drove.
W: No, my mom dislikes driving in the city. Besides, the train is super relaxing.
M: What does your mom do for work?
W: She's a nurse. But she gets the weekends off.
M: I see. Does she like New York? (13)
W: Actually, neither of us like it that much. (13) But we love spending time with my dad there

    Text 9
M: Thanks for agreeing to this interview, Mrs. Rogers. My teacher wants me to interview someone who lived during the 1940s.
W: Of course, Joey. What's your first question?
M: Well, where were you living in 1940? (14)
w: In Minneapolis, Minnesota, where I was born and raised. M: Did you live with your family? (14) .
W: Yes, with my parents and my younger brother. (14) In 1943, I moved to Washington D.C. by myself. I got a job as a typist for a newspaper.
    M: What was D.C. like?
W: It was an exciting time to be living there. I got my interest in politics from being in
the nation's capital. When I moved to California, Iwent straight to Sacramento and got a
job working for a state lawmaker.
M: Were you in California when the war ended?
W: No, I was still in D.C. I met my husband there, and we moved the following year, in
    1946. (15)
M: How long did you work for the lawmaker?
W: Well, I was a secretary for that politician for two years. Then I had my two girls and stayed home for a few years. But as soon as they were old enough, I ran for office myself(16)
    M: Really? Did you win?
    W: I did. I spent the next 20 years as a local politician. (16)
M: Wow. I've lived next door for years, (17) and I didn't even know that!

    Text 10
Ten years ago, everyone in China carried around a lot of cash with them. Credit cards were still not common, and most sellers did not have machines to accept bank cards.
Nowadays, credit cards are still not as common as they are in the West, (18) but China has advanced past the Western world in one respect: nearly everyone who has a smart phone in China also has an account with Alibaba.com or WeChat. (19) Alibaba.com andWeChat are two of China's largest and most successful Internet companies. Alipay and WeChat Pay can be linked to a bank account. (19) (20) Sending and receiving money is as simple as a few touches on a phone. (20) And China is rapidly becoming a cashless society. Using your phone as your wallet is much safer than carrying a lot of cash with you, and it's easier to keep track of how much you spend. (20) It is only a matter of time before WeChat Pay and Alipay begin to challenge the American company PayPal for customers outside China. At least for now, China is setting a pretty good example.
