In the past, westerners were not familiar with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), but now it is becoming globally popular. According to a government report, TCM has been introduced into183 countries and regions around the world.
However, westerners only have a little knowledge of TCM. Their understanding of TCM may be limited to acupuncture (针灸), cupping and massage (按摩). For instance, the purple, injury-like marks left on a U.S. famous swimmer’s back from cupping to relax his muscles and reduce pain became the center of attention during the Rio Olympics in 2016.
In fact, Chinese herbs (药草) play a more important role in curing diseases and keeping the body in good condition in the TCM treatment system than physical treatment. Therefore, it is disappointing to know that although 103 world Health Organization member countries have given approval to the practice of acupuncture, not many recognize Chinese herbal medicine. TCM is much less popular than Western medicine partly due to the slow development of Chinese herbs.
Herbs can be made into pills, powder and soup. The kind of herbs used, their quality, quantity and the processing together determine the effectiveness of the prescription (处方). Compared with Western medicine, which has standardized drug production processes and treatment methods, TCM lacks standardization. The chemical composition and functions of its medicine are still unclear and their effects are unstable. Fortunately, standardization has improved in recent decades and a number of factories are increasingly producing patented TCM drugs.
Another reason why TCM prescription drugs have developed slowly is that it lacks creativity. While Western medicine-making companies come up with new products every year, TCM drug producers tend to make medicine according to prescriptions handed down from the past. That Chinese chemist Tu Yoyo won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her research into malaria (痢疾) treatment may drive creativity to some extent in China’s TCM industry.
However, Rome was not built in a day. The current situation cannot be changed within a short time.
    24. What does the example of an American swimmer in Paragraph 2 show?
    A. Westerners know a little about TCM.
    B. Cupping is a kind of important TCM treatment.
    C. He was injured in his swimming.
    D. TCM is very popular among westerners.
    25. Why don’t some member countries of WHO recognize Chinese herbal medicine?
    A. Chinese herbs can get rid of diseases.
    B. They only approve the practice of acupuncture.
    C. Western medicine is more effective.
    D. Medicine made out of Chinese herbs develops slowly.
    26. How does the writer feel about the future of TCM?
    A. Anxious. B. Negative. C. Optimistic. D. Disappointed.
    27. What is the best title of the passage?
    A. The Effectiveness of TCM. B. The Barriers to TCM’s Development.
    C. The Weakness of TCM. D. The Future of TCM.
    C
While elephants born without tusks (长牙) are not unheard of,they normally form just 2 to 6 percent of the population. However, that is not the case at Mozambique’s Gorongosa National Park, where an astonishing 33 percent of female elephants born after the country’s civil war ended in 1992 are tuskless. While that may appear to be just a coincidence, Joyce Poole, an elephant behavior expert, has another theory. The researcher thinks we may be witnessing unnatural evolution of the species due to the constant hunting of elephants for valuable ivory.
Poole says before the country’s 15-year-long civil war, the 100,000—acre park was home to over 4,000 elephants. However, by the time the conflict ended in 1992, about 90 percent of them had been killed for ivory to help finance weapons (武器) and meat to feed the soldiers. Of the less than 200 survivors, over 50 percent of adult females had no tusks. Therefore, it is not surprising that the park’s tuskless elephant population has grown greatly.
This is not the first time researchers have observed a great change in the population of elephants. At Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park and Lupande Game Management Area, which were heavily hunted in the 1970s and 1980s, 35% of elephants 25 years or older and 13% of those younger than 25 are now without tusks. A 2008 study published in the African Journal of Ecology found that the number of tuskless females at the Ruaha National Park in Tanzania went from 10.5 percent in 1969 to almost 40 percent in 1989, largely due to illegal hunting for ivory.
The recent ban on ivory in both the US and China should help get rid of, or at least reduce, elephant hunting. However, scientists are not sure how long it will take for elephants with a higher rate of tuskless females, to change the trend.
    28. What is the probable cause of the phenomenon mentioned in Paragraph 1?
    A. Illegal hunting. B. Constant farming.
    C. A pure coincidence. D. Natural evolution.
    29. Why did people kill so many elephants during the civil war in Mozambique?
    A. To get funds by selling ivory. B. To develop new weapons.
    C. To provide food for local people. D. To make ivory products.
    30. Which of the following had the earliest record on tuskless elephants?
    A. Gorongonsa National Park. B. South Luangwa National Park.
    C. The Ruaha National Park. D. Lupande Game Management Area.
    31. What does the underlined phrase “the trend” in the last paragraph refer to?
    A. Elephants facing greater danger. B. Elephants growing more slowly.
    C. Fewer female elephants staying alive. D. More female elephants being tuskless.

    D
Most autonomous vehicles test-driving in cities navigate (导航) by using 3-D maps marking every edge of roadside with almost centimeter-level accuracy. But few places have been mapped in such detail, which has left most areas like smaller towns inaccessible to those driverless cars.
Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) now have developed a new navigation system that guides autonomous vehicles without such accurate maps. This technology can help driverless cars travel almost anywhere.
The navigation system maps out a course down unfamiliar roads much as a human driver would by continually scanning its surroundings, with a laser sensor (激光感应器), to measure how close it is to the edges of the road. Meanwhile, the car also follows a tool like a smart phone map app that provides directions to its destination, as well as information about the rules of the road, such as speed limits and the positions of stoplights. Teddy Ort, a roboticist at MIT, test-drove a car equipped with this navigation system on a one-way road. It slowly traveled one kilometer without any human assistance.
This system assumes that a car has a clear path down the road, but it can be paired with other existing computing technology to discover in-road obstacles (障碍), says Ort. The researchers also plan to build a version of this system which can spot markings painted on streets, so that the car can drive on two-way roads. "Self-driving cars with this navigation system may need other sensors to work in different conditions,” Alexander Wyglinski, and electrical engineer at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. "Since laser sensors don't work well in rain or snow, these cars might need additional imaging technologies to drive safely in bad weather."
    32. What may be a problem for most driverless cars?
    A. They fail in test-driving. B. Their maps are out-dated.
    C. They run in limited areas. D. Their guides are unreliable.
    33. What can we infer about the MIT navigation system?
    A. It includes accurate maps. B. It removes in-road obstacles.
    C. It works by detecting the road. D. It features a smart phone app.
    34. What is the purpose of Paragraph 4?
    A. To confirm the test-drive results. B. To indicate further research areas.
    C. To recognize scientists' achievements. D. To show the creativity of driverless cars.
    35. What is the main idea of the text?
    A. Autonomous cars beat human drivers on country roads.
    B. Navigating self-driving cars may work in different conditions.
    C. Smart mapping technology adds to the functions of self-driving cars.
    D. A new navigation system helps autonomous cars drive remote roads.

    第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Anyone who knows me well would see me as an optimist. 36 This was the case for me on a particularly cold January day.
I felt exhausted by the painful challenges I was dealing with in my personal life. 37 —The gray sky blocked even a single ray of sunlight.
About midway through the day, I left work to get some lunch. Still feeling negative, I noticed that the sun had come out for a moment. I began to think about my negative attitude and reminded myself that I was responsible for choosing my state of mind. 38 Even though I reminded myself of this truth, I couldn’t make the change.
As I stopped at a red light, I looked at the car in front of mine. The personalized license plate caught my eye — It read “SUNZOUT”. This brought an immediate smile to my face. 39 And in the midst of the longest, darkest, coldest winter, this in itself was a blessing. But then my eyes moved to the car that was next to the SUNZOUT vehicle. The license plate on that car read “GROUCH”. This brought more than a smile to my face as I laughed out loud! Seeing the two opposite license plates at that exact moment in time strengthened my previous recognition of my ability to choose my attitude.
40 I returned to work and share my story with several co-workers who responded with warm laughter at what I refer to as my “message from beyond”. I learned that day that when we’re feeling too discouraged to bring ourselves out of an active state, relief is only a prayer away!
    A. The weather seemed to match my mood.
    B. Pessimists think the opposite way, however.
    C. However, even optimists can temporarily lose hope.
    D. It felt like a reminder that the sun was shining after all.
    E. Do you think that the sunshine will spread throughout your life?
    F. I felt my spirit lift as I made the decision to choose a positive attitude.
    G. While I could not ignore the pain I was going through, I could choose to think positively.

    书面表达
    One possible version:
Last Thursday, all the students and teachers in our school gathered in the auditorium at 3 p.m. to enjoy a special activity——an English speech contest with the theme of “telling Chinese stories in English”
The activity consisted of three parts. First, every contestant delivered his or her own speech and then each of them was asked to make an impromptu speech according to the given questions by the judges. The last part was evaluating and presenting the trophies to the award winners. This contest gave us a good opportunity to enhance our abilities of speaking English as well as having a deeper understanding of the differences and connections between China and the world. More importantly, we get to know it is our responsibility to spread splendid Chinese culture to the world.
