With these tips you can finally get a solid night's sleep.

    Reserve Your Bed

Get into bed just for sleeping. Avoid working, paying bills, reading, or watching television in bed. If you associate your bed only with sleep, you’ll be more likely to fall asleep.

    Watch the Caffeine(咖啡因)

Too much caffeine throughout the day can cause interrupted sleep. Limit yourself to two cups of tea, coffee, or cola, taken at least 6 hours before bedtime.

    Tap the Exercise Answer

In a study from Stanford University School of Medicine, a group of 50- to 76-year-olds who had complained of sleep problems began proper exercise for about half an hour four times a week. Compared with a similar group of people who didn’t exercise, the more active group slept an average of one hour more each night, took less time to fall asleep.

    Take a Bath

Take a warm bath an hour or two before bed. Your body temperature will slowly drop after you get out of the tub(浴盆), making you feel tired. Don’t bathe right before bed, however, because it can briefly stimulate you enough to make it hard to fall asleep.

    Buy the Right Bed

A bed that’s too soft can cause poor sleep. Replace your mattress(床垫)if it’s more than ten years old, and buy one that’s as firm as you can tolerate but still comfortable.

If 30 minutes go by and you haven’t fallen asleep, don’t lie in bed feeling frustrated. Get up and do something relaxing.

    1. Which of the following is the best choice if one wants to have a good sleep?

A . Drinking as much coffee as possible.

B . Buying a beautiful and soft bed.

C . Watching TV in bed before going to sleep.

    D. Taking a warm bath an hour or two before bed.

    A . tired         B. excited        C. interested         D. encouraged

    3. What is the best title for the passage?

    A. Take a bath before sleeping            B. The importance of a good sleep

    C. Tips for a good sleep                 D. How to buy the best bed

    B

I must have looked deep in thought, or as deep in thought as an 11-year-old man can, when my grandmother glanced up from her weeding to ask, "You have something on your mind, don't you?"

"Yes, I was thinking that someday I want to be an Olympic speed skating champion like my hero, Eric Heiden, I want to be a doctor like my parents and I want to help children in Africa."

I immediately knew I had confided in the right person when a knowing smile broke across her face. "Johann, of course! You can do anything you want to do!" she said simply. And with my grandmother's support, I set out to pursue my passions.

14 years later, I was well ready to take hold of my first dream: becoming an Olympic champion. The Olympics in 1994 were in my home country, Norway. As I entered the Olympic stadium, I wasn't the best athlete, and many had doubts about my ability to perform well. But I had something special working for me. I had a woman in the first row who believed in me following my passions just as much as I did. For the first time ever, my grandmother was going to see me skate.

It happened. Breaking a world record, I won the gold.

As I stood on the podium(领奖台) that I had dreamed about my entire life, a curious question popped into my head. Why me? Why did I win, given all the other incredible competitors out there? The reason had to be more than a grandmother who shared a belief in her grandson's dream. The question led me to only one answer: because I wanted to make a difference in the world, and with all the media attention on my success, I could.

I immediately knew what that difference had to be: hope in the lives of the children in Africa. Six months earlier, I'd been invited to Eritrea as an ambassador for Olympic Aid.

    4. When the author spoke out what was on his mind, his grandmother______.

    A. supported him           B. laughed at him

    C. had no confidence in him      D. felt quite surprised

    5. The author probably realized his first dream at the age of ______.

    A. 20          B. 22    C. 25     D. 28

    6. What will the author tell us in the part following the passage?

    A. His efforts in helping the African children.

    B. His hard training in preparing for the next Olympics.

    C. His successes at other Olympic games.

    D. His grandmother’s attitude towards him.

    7. The whole passage is mainly about ______.

    A. a young boy who had many dreams

    B. the encouragement from a grandmother

    C. a sportsman who realized his first dream of helping African children

    D. an Olympic hero who made a difference in the world

    C

People who often eat nuts appear to live longer, according to the latest study of its kind. The findings, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, suggested the greatest benefit was in those eating them on their daily diet.

Eating nuts was linked to a healthier lifestyle including being less likely to smoke or be overweight and more likely to exercise. The British Heart Foundation said more research was needed to prove the link, “While this is an interesting link, we need further research to make sure if it's the nuts that protect heart health, or other sides of people’s lifestyle.”

The study followed nearly 120,000 people for 30 years. The more regularly people ate nuts, the less likely they were to die during the study. People eating nuts once a week were 11% less likely to have died during the study than those who never ate nuts. Lead researcher Dr. Charles Fuchs, from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, said, “The most obvious benefit was a decrease of 29% in deaths from heart disease, but we also saw a significant reduction of 11% in the danger of dying from cancer.”

They suggest nuts are lowering cholesterol(胆固醇) and insulin resistance(胰岛素抗性). Nuts contain unsaturated fat(不饱和脂肪), protein(蛋白质) and several kinds of vitamins and minerals and they can take the place of snacks like chocolate bars, cakes and biscuits.

Victoria Taylor, senior expert at the British Heart Foundation, said, “This study shows close connection between regularly eating a small handful of nuts and a lower risk of death from heart disease.” Choosing plain, unsalted foods rather than sweet, salted, or chocolate-covered will keep your salt and sugar intake down.

    8. According to the passage, what kind of people benefit most from eating nuts?

    A. Those who eat most nuts at a time. B. Those who eat most nuts.

    C. Those who eat nuts on their daily diet. D. Those who eat less nuts.

    9. Which kind of disease had a most decrease for regular nuts eater?

    A. Cancer B. Unknown.

    C. Stomach disease D. Heart disease

    10. The writer developed the article mainly by__________________.

    A. the order of time B. specific examples

    C. listing data D. comparing the difference

    11. Which section should the passage be taken from the newspaper?

    A. Science section B. Health section

    C. Entertainment section D. Tech section

    D

The world’s insects are hurtling down the path to extinction(灭绝), threatening a “catastrophic collapse(崩溃) of nature’s ecosystems”, according to the first global scientific review. More than 40% of insect species are declining and a third are endangered, the analysis found. The rate of extinction is eight times faster than that of mammals, birds and reptiles.

“It should be of huge concern to all of us, for insects are at the heart of every food web,  they pollinate(给…传授花粉 the large majority of plant species, keep the soil healthy, recycle nutrients, control pests, and much more. Love them or loathe them, we humans cannot survive without insects, ” said Prof Dave Goulson at the University of Sussex in the UK.

The analysis, published in the journal Biological Conservation, says intensive agriculture is the main driver of the declines, particularly the heavy use of pesticides. Urbanization  and climate change are also significant factors.

One of the biggest impacts of insect loss is on the many birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish that eat insects. A small number of adaptable species are increasing in number, but not nearly enough to outweigh the big losses.

Matt Shardlow, at the conservation charity Buglife, said: “It is gravely sobering to see this collation of evidence that demonstrates the pitiful state of the world’s insect populations. It is increasingly obvious that the planet’s ecology is breaking and there is a need for an intense and global effort to stop and reverse these dreadful trends.”

12.What does “are hurtling down ”underlined mean?

A.To climb very slow in a straight direction

B.To move very fast in a particular direction.

C.To become lower in value or level quickly

D.To speed up suddenly in a particular direction

13.According to the passage what caused the declines of the insects EXCEPT?

    A.Intensive agriculture          B.Urbanization

    C.Climate change              D.Pests control.

14.In paragraph 4, the author wants to stress the decline of insects

A.by giving the examples           B.by making the comparison

C.by giving the definition.          D.by making the explanation

15.What is the main idea of the text?

A.Sharply decreasing insects numbers threaten damage of nature.

B.The impacts will be brought by the insect loss.

C.The effective measures are taken to stop the scary trends.

D.The leading factors cause insects decline
