Across Europe, where visitors can outnumber residents in the summer months, the complaints have started. Last week, in Barcelona, an open-top bus was spray-painted across its windscreen with the words “Tourism Kills Neighbourhoods”. The message is clear: such cities are under pressure. In tourists and residents’ battle for shared spaces, local authorities are uncomfortably in the middle. The tourism is one of the largest employers in the world, with one new job created for every 30 new visitors to a destination—but at what cost to locals’ quality of life?
More people are travelling than ever before, and lower barriers to entry and falling costs mean they are doing so for shorter periods. The rise of “city breaks”—48-hour bursts of foreign cultures—has increased tourist numbers. “Too many people do the same thing at the exact same time,” says Xavier Font, a professor at the University of Surrey, “For locals, the city no longer belongs to them.”
Compounding the problem is Airbnb, which has made tourists more casual in their approach to international travel, but added to residents’ headaches. Those permanent citizens who share their apartment blocks with Airbnb hosts have lost their patience, “No longer do we have to share the streets with tourists, we have to share our own buildings!” To ease the congestion around the main attractions, many cities are taking immediate action. Venice is proposing a new concept of “ detourism”: sustainable travel tips and alternative routes for exploring a different Venice. A greater variety of guidance for future visitors—ideas for what to do in off-peak seasons, for example, —can guide them from overcrowded landmarks. Repeat visitors have a better sense of the culture and it is much easier to integrate their behaviour with residents of the cities.
“But the locals should learn to take tourists as a part of urban life. Tourists do not have to be considered passive players, but rather as visitors with rights and duties,” says Font, “Everyone has a part to play in promoting that change.”
24.What problem do the local authorities often have in a tourist city?
A. The challenge creating more business for local people.
B. The conflict taking place among tourists from different countries.
C. The dilemma between tourism and living quality of the locals.
D. The competitions among the most popular attractions.
25.Why do the local residents reject “city break” according to Paragraph Two?
A. Too many visitors have damaged the quality of life.
B. The locals fail to benefit from the city break economically.
C. The local authorities lack adequate operation guidance.
D. They are reluctant to share anything with coming tourists.
26.What is Airbnb most probably?
A. A new travelling map with more street information.
B. A solution by Font to improve the local living quality.
C. A small town having the same complaints about tourism.
D. A website to help travellers find a homestay.
27.Under the concept of Detourism, which of the following should be encouraged?
A. Developing a city break during on-seasons.
B. Shifting visitors from busy attractions.
C. Attracting more first-time visitors.
D. Taking tourism as a passive part of urban life.

The legislature(立法机构) finds that the cigarette is considered one of the deadliest products in human history. So begins a new bill introduced in Hawaii’s State House, calling for a ban on cigarette sales in the state by 2024.
Hawaii has some of the most restrictive cigarette laws in the nation. In 2016, it became the first state to raise the age to buy cigarettes to 21. Now, its new bill calls for raising the cigarette-buying age to 30 by 2020, up to 40, 50 and 60 in each following year, and up to 100 by 2024. That would effectively clear Hawai’s store shelves of cigarettes, although tourists could still bring them in. The age limits would not apply to e-cigarettes, cigars or chewing tobacco.
And curiously,, Hawaii would offer its centenarians (百岁老人) the chance to buy cigarettes ear the end of their life — if they could find them
Richard Creagan, the bill’s sponsor, said that he hoped the bill could represent an “endgame” for the cigarette problem, and that it might be easier to pass the bill in Hawaii than in a mainland state.
“On the mainland they have more trouble with this because they have states around them that are selling cigarettes,” he said. “We don’t have any states around us. And that’s why I thought it could be done here, and it would be kind of an example for the rest of the nation and the world.”
Creagan told the Hawaii Tribune-Herald he’s confident that the bill will survive any court challenges.
In 2015, the National Academy of Sciences released a report arguing that increasing the age to buy tobacco to 21 would have a “considerable impact” on the age at which someone takes their first puff. The report also suggested “if someone is not a regular tobacco user by age 25, it is highly unlikely he or she will become one.”
28.What can we know about Hawaii from Paragraph 2?
A. Hawaii has no cigarette laws at present.
B. The cigarette-buying age will be 50 in 2023.
C. The age to buy cigarettes was raised to 21 in 2016.
D. All cigarette stores in the state have been closed.
29.What does the new bill call for?
A. Even tourists can’t bring cigarettes to Hawaii.
B. No one under 100 can buy cigarettes by 2024.
C. Hawaiians can’t buy cigarettes in other states.
D. Growing tobacco is not allowed in Hawaii.
30.The underlined words in the last paragraph mean “________”.
A. buys their first pack of cigarettes
B. smokes their first cigarette
C. quits smoking for the first time
D. first offers cigarettes to others
31.What is the main idea of the text?
A. Hawaii is considering a bill to ban cigarette sales.
B. Hawaii will lower the cigarette-buying age.
C. Hawaii is to ban smoking in its neighboring states.
D. Hawaii has released a report on the harm of smoking.
D
Chinese scientists recently have produced two monkeys with the same gene, Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua, using the same technique that gave us Dolly the sheep. These monkeys are not actually the first primates(灵长类)to be cloned. Another one named Tetra was produced in the late 1990s by embryo(胚胎)splitting, the division of an early-stage embryo into two or four separate cells to make clones. By contrast, they were each made by replacing an egg cell nucleus(原子核)with DNA from a differentiated body cell. This Dolly method, known as somatic cell nuclear transfer(SCNT), can create more clones and allows researchers greater control over the edits they make to the DNA.
Success came from adopting several new techniques. These included a new type of microscopy to better view the cells during handling or using several materials that encourage cell reprogramming, which hadn’t been tried before on primates. Still, the research process proved difficult, and many attempts by the team failed. Just two healthy baby monkeys born from more than 60 tested mothers. This leads to many researchers’ pouring water on the idea that the team’s results bring scientists closer to cloning humans. They thought this work is not a stepping stone to establishing methods for obtaining live born human clones. Instead, this clearly remains a very foolish thing to attempt, it would be far too inefficient, far too unsafe, and it is also pointless.
But the scientists involved emphasize that this is not their goal. There is now no barrier for cloning primate species, thus cloning humans is closer to reality. However, their research purpose is entirely for producing non-human primate models for human diseases; they absolutely have no intention, and society will not permit this work to be extended to humans. Despite limitations, they treat this breakthrough a novel model system for scientists studying human biology and disease.
32.What do we know about the technology called SCNT?
A. It created the first two primates.
B. It may contribute to editing the DNA.
C. It can divide an early-stage embryo into several cells.
D. It produced two cloned monkeys with different genes.
33.What does the author mean by “pouring water on the idea” in paragraph 2?
A. Keeping a hot topic of it.
B. Attaching no importance to it.
C. Having a low opinion of it.
D. Adding supportive evidence to it.
34.What is the scientists’ purpose to clone these monkeys?
A. To prepare for their research on human cloning.
B. To serve as a stepping stone to their reputation.
C. To help with the study of human diseases.
D. To raise money for holding an exhibition of novels.
35.What can we infer from the passage?
A. Cloning humans is already on its way.
B. New techniques seem to be pointless.
C. Society won’t agree to clone another monkey.
D. The success rate of cloning a monkey was not high.
