I promised to myself on the way down to the vacation beach cottage. For two weeks I would try to be a loving husband and father. Totally loving. No ifs, ands or buts.
The idea had occurred to me as I listened to a talk on my car radio. The speaker was reading a passage about husbands being thoughtful of their wives. Then he went on to say, "Love is an act of will. A person can choose to love."To myself, I had to admit that I had been a selfish husband. Well, for two weeks that would change.
And it did. Right from the moment I kissed Evelyn at the doctor and said, "That new yellow sweater looks good on you."
"Oh, Tom, you noticed," she said, surprised and pleased. Maybe a little puzzled.
After the long drive, I wanted to sit and read. Evelyn suggested a walk on the beach. I started to refuse, but then I changed my mind. We walked on the beach while the children flew their kites.
So it went. Two weeks of not calling the Wall Street firm; a visit to the shell museum though I usually hate museums. Relaxed and happy, that's how the whole vacation passed.
There was one thing that went wrong with my experiment, however. On the last night at our cottage, Evelyn stared at me with the saddest expression.
    "What's the matter?"I asked her.
"Tom,"she said in a voice filled with distress, "do you know something I don't?"
    "What do you mean?"
"Well …that checkup I had several weeks ago …our doctor …did he tell you something about me? Tom, you've been so good to me …am I dying?"
It took a moment for it all to sink in. Then I burst out laughing.
"No, honey,"I said, wrapping her in my arms."You're not dying; I'm just starting to live."

    B. Evelyn suffered a deadly disease.

    A. Tom thought Evelyn's words were funny.
    B. It took Tom a while to understand Evelyn's words.
    C. Tom's heart sank suddenly on hearing Evelyn's words.
    D. Tom tried to prevent Evelyn knowing the truth about her illness.
27What can we infer about Evelyn's feeling towards her husband's change? ______

A new study says one part of the human brain may become smaller as the result of a condition known as jet lag which results from flying long distances in an airplane. People with jet lag feel extremely tired for several days. They may also have problems in thinking clearly and remembering.
Recently a researcher at the University of Bristol in Britain reported the findings of his jet lag study, which involved twenty women who worked for international airlines. They had served passengers on airplanes for five years. These flight attendants flew across many countries and at least seven time zones. In the study, the flight attendants had different amounts of time to recover from jet lag. Half the women spent five days or fewer in their home areas between long flights. The other half spent more than fourteen days in their home areas.
The researcher took some saliva from the women's mouths to measure levels of a hormone (荷尔蒙) that increases during stress. He tested them to see if they could remember where black spots appeared on a computer screen. And he took pictures of their brains to measure the size of the brain's temporal lobes (脑叶).
It was found that the women who had less time between flights had smaller right temporal lobes. This area of the brain deals with recognizing and remembering what is seen. The same group performed worse and had slower reaction times on the visual memory test. And their saliva samples showed higher levels of stress hormones.
The researcher believes the brain needs at least ten days to recover after a long trip. He says airline workers told him their ability to remember got worse after working on planes for about four years. Other studies have shown that increased feelings of stress can cause a loss of cells in the part of the brain that controls memory.
Scientists say more tests are needed to study the effects of jet lag on the brain. They want to find out if too much jet lag could permanently affect memory.
28.What causes jet lag according to the passage? ______
    A. Having a long trip.
    B. Flying across many countries.
    C. Making lengthy flight journeys.
    D. Traveling across several time zones.
29.What are the second and third paragraphs about? ______
    A. The process of the study.
    B. The result of the study.
    C. The meaning of the study.
    D. The preparation of the study.
30What did the researcher find about his jet lag study? ______
    A. The women who have longer flights fail the memory test.
    B. The women who have longer rest at home show better memory.
    C. The women who rest more than 14 days produce more hormones.
    D. The women who have less time in flight have smaller right temporal lobes.
31What can be the best title for the text? ______
    A. Solution to Jet Lag

About a month after I joined Facebook, I got a call from Lori Goler, a highly regarded senior director of marketing at eBay. She made it clear that this was a business call."I want to apply to work with you at Facebook,"she said."Instead of recommending myself, I want to ask you: What is your biggest problem, and how can I solve it?"
My jaw hit the floor. I had hired thousands of people over the previous decade and no one had ever said anything remotely like that. People usually focus on finding the right role for themselves, with the implication (暗示) that their skills will help the company. Lori put Facebook's needs front and center. It was a killer approach. I responded,"Recruiting (招聘员工) is my biggest problem. And, yes, you can solve it."
Lori never dreamed she would work in recruiting, but she jumped in. She even agreed to trade earnings for acquiring new skills in a new field. Lori did a great job running recruiting and within months was promoted to her current job, leading People@Facebook.
The most common metaphor (比喻)for careers is a ladder, but this concept no longer applies to most workers. Until 2010, the average American had eleven jobs from the ages of eighteen to forty-six alone. Lori often repeats what Pattie Sellers says, who came up with a much better metaphor: "Careers are a jungle gym, not a ladder."
32.Why did Lori make the call? ______
    A. She tried to ask for a pay rise in Facebook
    B. She wanted to become an employee in Facebook
    C. She helped Facebook to solve the biggest problem.
    D. She wanted to make a business deal with Facebook
33.What impressed the author most? ______
    A. Lori was good at running recruitin
    B. Lori was skilled in marketing at eBay
    C. Lori attached great importance to Facebooks needs.
    D. Lori jumped in Facebook with no adequate experience
34What can we infer from the last two paragraphs? ______
    A. Now not all people tend to climb the ladder.
    B. None on the ladder can enjoy the great views.
    C. Jungle gyms offer limited exploration for employees.
    D. A female college graduate benefits little from the jungle gyms.
35.What is the best title of the passage? ______
    A. Facebook's Biggest Problem
    B. How to Get Promoted at Work
    C. Applying for a Job in Facebook
    D. It's a Jungle Gym, Not a Ladder
    【解析】BCAD
1 want to apply to work with you at Facebook" she said,我想申请在 Facebook上工作,她说,可知她打电话的目的是为了找工作,D项正确,故选D.
Lori put Facebook' s needs front and center. It was a killer approach.
The most common metaphor for careers is a ladder. but this concept no longer applies to most workers.
It's a Jungle Gym, Not a Ladder作为文章的标题更吻合文章的主题,故选D.

Sometimes it can be hard to recognize a true friend, one who is loyal(忠诚的)and one who is worth keeping by your side. The suggestions provided in this article will help to guide you in working out which friends are likely to be true.
Be able to trust your friends. You should be able to trust true friends and they should return this trust. Your friends tell you secrets that no one else knows. Let you share secrets. Ask you for advice.36 However, if your friends hide things from you and act secretive, this could be a sign that they do not trust you, but it could also mean your friends keep to themselves or don't like to reveal too much about themselves.
Consider comfort. How comfortable do your friends feel when they are around you? Watch them, are they being themselves or are they timid (胆怯的)around you? 37True friendships can take a while to develop, but if your friends are true, they should feel comfortable around you.
38 This is not meant in a romantic way, but consider whether your friends are comfortable with the touch. If your friends are fine with hugging you, leaning on you, resting their heads on your shoulder and so forth, then you can judge they love you.
Think about loyalty. True friends are always there for one another. If you are in need of a helping hand, your true friends should be there to offer it to you. 39 You can trust friends with anything, knowing that they will be loyal and will not let your secrets out.
Look at how you fight. Nearly all best friends fight; so if you and your friend have a little dispute(争论), don't sweat it!40 . They will not tell each other's secrets and they still care about each other.

    A. Consider the touch barrier.
    B. Consider how you insult each other.
    C. They should know that you are not serious.
    D. These are sure signs that your friends trust you.
    E. Are they acting fake-perhaps hiding an insecurity?
    F. True friends should not get one another into trouble.
    G. True friends will remain faithful and find their way through a fight.
    【解析】DEAFG
36.D. Do your friends tell you secrets that no one else knows? Ask you for advice? However, if your friends hide things from you and act secretive, this could be a sign that they do not trust you,
How comfortable do your friends feel when they are around you? Watch them, are they being themselves or are they timid (胆怯的)around you? Are they acting fake-perhaps hiding an insecurity?
38.A. This is not meant in a romantic way, but consider whether your friends are comfortable with the touch. 故选A.
39.F. If you are in need of a helping hand, your true friends should be there to offer it to you.
Nearly all best friends fight; so if you and your friend have a little dispute(争论), don't sweat it! They will not tell each other's secrets and they still care about each other. True friends will remain faithful and find their way through a fight.
