When a leafy plant is under attackit doesn't sit quietlyBack in 1983two scientistsJack Schultz and Ian Baldwinreported that young maple trees getting bitten by insects send out a particular smell that neighboring plants can getThese chemicals come from the injured parts of the plant  and seem to be an alarmWhat the plants pump through the air is a mixture of chemicals known as volatile organic compoundsVOCs for short

Scientists have found that all kinds of plants give out VOCs when being attackedIt's a plant's way of crying outBut is anyone listeningApparentlyBecause we can watch the neighbors react

Some plants pump out smelly chemicals to keep insects awayBut others do double dutyThey pump out perfumes designed to attract different insects who are natural enemies to the attackersOnce they arrivethe tables are turnedThe attacker who was lunching now becomes lunch

In study after studyit appears that these chemical conversations help the neighborsThe damage is usually more serious on the first plantbut the neighborsrelatively speakingstay safer because they heard the alarm and knew what to do

Does this mean that plants talk to each otherScientists don't knowMaybe the first plant just made a cry of pain or was sending a message to its own branchesand soin effectwas talking to itselfPerhaps the neighbors just happened to "overhear" the crySo information was exchangedbut it wasn't a trueintentional back and forth

Charles Darwinover 150 years agoimagined a world far busiernoisier and more intimate(亲密的) than the world we can see and hearOur senses are weakThere's a whole lot going on

5What does the author mean by"the tables are turned"in paragraph 3?

AThe attackers get attacked             BThe insects gather under the table

6Scientists find from their studies that plants can

Ctalk to one another intentionally   Dhelp their neighbors when necessary

7What can we infer from the last paragraph?

AThe world is changing faster than everBPeople have stronger senses than before

CThe world is more complex than it seemsDPeople in Darwin's time were more imaginative

Studies have shown most people fail to realize how much time they spend on their smartphones each day.

Frank and Amelia's family were put to a test, using a free app called "Momentscreen Time Tracker". The VascellarosFrank, Amelia, 14-year-old twins Frankie and Joe, and 17-year-old Samall said they did not really know they were spending so much time on their phones each day.

"Honestly, I don't feel like I'm on my phone a lot," Amelia Vascellaro said. Amelia was on her phone far less often than Frank, according to the app. While Amelia spent about an hour per day on the phone, Frank spent close to four hours on his phonewhich came as a shock to him. The children's times varied but they often spent more than a couple of hours on the phone as well.

Minneapolisbased Dr Kirsten Lind Seal sees phone usage come up a lot among families. Lind Seal said many family members' phone use has become problematic.

"If we hear more than once, 'Do you have to be on your phone right now? Can you please put your phone down? Did you hear what I said?' it may be a sign that it is negatively influencing our family relationships and our daily lives," she said.

Lind Seal said actually paying attention to how much time one spends on the phone is a good first step in deciding when to put it down.

She asks parents to encourage more face to face communication for teens and young adults as they continue developing their social and emotional skills. "What we find is that we are really losing out on empathythe ability to understand other people's feelings and problems——when we spend a lot of time on our smartphones to communicate with other people she said.

12.How did the families tested by the app feel about the test results?

    A .Satisfied.        B .Doubtful.           C .Uninterested.           D .Astonished.

13.Why did Lind Seal mention the three questions in Para 5?

A .To encourage people to live a simple life. B .To explain the signs of problematic phone use.

C .To show the importance of close relationships. D .To ask people if they use phones too much.

14.What did Lind Seal want to convey in the last paragraph?

A .We should make more face to face communication.

B .We can understand each other better using smart phones.

C .Our ability of empathy is strengthened by smart phones.

D .Smart phone usage improves the teens' emotional skills.

15.Where is this text most likely from?

    A . A diary.     B . A guide book.       C . A  novel.      D . A  magazine.

    第三部分 写作(共两节,满分35分)

    第一节 (共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

It was on Sunday so I didn’t have to go to school as usually. My parents went to the countryside to see my grandparents, left me alone. After finishing my homework, I begin to play football at home. All of a sudden, I kicked the ball so hardly that it flew right onto a vase and broke it. It was great favorite of my mother’s. I decided to tell my parents it was the fault of the cat for fear that she should punish me. Therefore, when they got home, I hesitated for a moment and told them that truly happened. Instead of punishing me, they just hoped that I would never make so a foolish mistake again.

    书面表达

There are many advantages of smiling. It can not only make us happy, but also please others. If we smile at life, life will smile on us in return. So I want to smile at all whenever and wherever possible,

First, I would like to smile at my parents because they have given me life and take all the trouble to bring me up. They arrange almost everything for me. With their help, I have made great progress. I would like to say “Thank you” to them with a smile. Then my smile should go to myself, for only in this way can I gain more confidence in smiling my troubles away and live a better life.

In a word, let’s greet every day with a smile. Tomorrow is another day.
