请认真阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Pete took his seat this day on his usual bench in Union Square. Every Thanksgiving Day for nine years Pete had taken the same seat exactly at one o’clock, and each time the same pleasant thing had happened. But this time Pete had come here more from habit than from hunger. Certainly today Pete was not hungry. Two rich old ladies gave him a Thanksgiving dinner of everything he could eat.
Pete sat on the bench now, hardly able to move. The buttons on his ragged shirt and coat were about to burst. The November breeze and the first light fall of snow felt cool and pleasant to his face. He happened to look to the left and there in the distance he saw the Old Gentleman coming toward him. He wanted to get up and run, but he was so full of food that he stayed right there. Every Thanksgiving Day for nine years, the Old Gentleman had come there, found Pete on the same bench, and then taken him to a restaurant and bought him a Thanksgiving dinner. It was a kind of tradition which the Old Gentleman, who had no family and lived alone, had tried to continue.
“How do you do? “ said the Old Gentleman. “Glad to see that the changes of another year have permitted you to move in health through this beautiful world.”
Each time the Old Gentleman had said exactly the same thing. It was part of the tradition. Pete, too, began to feel as though he himself was now a part of the tradition, and he therefore did not have the courage to tell the old man that he had already eaten. This dinner seemed to mean so much to the Old Gentleman.
“Thank you, sir,” said Pete at last. “I’ll go with you gladly. I’m very hungry, sir.”Together the Old Gentleman and Pete walked south to the same restaurant where each year Pete had his Thanksgiving dinner. The Old Gentleman seemed pleased and happy. When the waiter brought dish after dish of food to Pete, the Old Gentleman sat quietly and smiled. Under the circumstances, Pete had to eat. It was part of the tradition, and so he ate like a hero, although when he entered the restaurant even the smell of food almost made him sick. At last Pete leaned back with the battle won.
“Thank you, sir,” he said, with some effort, “for a fine dinner.”
They parted as they did each year at the door, the Old Gentlemen going south, Pete north.
Around the corner, Pete stopped for a moment, felt a terrible pain in his stomach, and then fell to the sidewalk unconscious. A little time later an ambulance came. In the hospital they discovered that he had had an attack of indigestion(消化不良).
An hour later, another ambulance brought the Old Gentleman to the same hospital. At first they thought it was also indigestion but later one of the nurses said, “That nice old gentleman over there-you wouldn’t think that it was a case of hunger.”

Japanese people, who never miss a chance to be photographed, were lining up to get their pictures on a postage stamp. Vanity (虚荣)stamps with personal photographs went on sale for the first time in Japan as part of an international postage stamp exhibition. The customer’s photo was taken with a digital camera and then printed on stamp sheets, a process that takes about five minutes. Sold in a sheet of 10 stamps for $8. 80, little more than the cost of lunch in Tokyo, each stamp printed a different scene from a traditional painting along with the photo.
The stamps can be used normally to mail a letter, and postal officials hope they will help encourage interest in letter writing in the Internet age. “Certainly e-mail is a useful method of communication, but letters are fun in a different way,” said Hatsumi Shimizu, an official in the Post Ministry. “We want to show young people that letters can be fun too.”
While similar stamp sheets appeared in Australia in 1999 and are now sold in some nations and territories, Japan’s fondness for commemorative photos is likely to make them especially popular here. Indeed, officials had prepared 1 000 sheets but they were sold out in less than 30 minutes. Although the stamps are currently only available as a special service during the exhibition, postal officials said they may start selling them on a regular basis in the future.

In the middle of winter , when snow is falling in many parts of the United States, scientists have sounded a warning to people who plan to spend many hours in the sun this summer. The warning: The sun’s summertime rays are more dangerous than once thought.
A team of scientists from 80 nations recently reported to the United Nations that a layer of ozone (臭氧层)in the atmosphere, which protects humans from harmful levels of ultraviolet (紫外线)radiation, will be thinner over the United States this summer. The thinner layer allows more ultraviolet rays from the sun to reach Earth. The extra amount of ultraviolet radiation could cause an increase in the number of cases of skin cancer.
Scientists first became concerned about the layer in the mid-1980s when a hole was discovered in the layer above Antarctica during the winter. The hole was caused in chemicals used in refrigerators and air conditioners. When these chemicals are sent out into the atmosphere, they produce gases that destroy the ozone.
Concern about the protective ozone layer rose more recently when data from satellites and ground stations showed that ozone levels were dropping over areas other than Antarctica. Low ozone levels were recorded in the spring and summer over the United States and over other populated areas in the world.
Although many countries have already begun stopping the use of ozone-destroying chemicals, the new findings are expected to advance the timetable for a total ban of the chemicals.

If you walk slowly through downtown Helsinki during the day, taking in the splendid 19th century buildings, white boats and noise of passing trams (有轨电车), you will start to understand why it is called a city of two colors: white and blue.
The sea is always present in Helsinki. When you take a walk over the great open space of the central square, you will hear seabirds screaming. When you take the tram, suddenly and unexpectedly, you are faced with a calm, shining blue sea. You may notice that people in Helsinki do not rush about as in other cities. Instead, they walk along the roads, politely letting other people go by.
A usual way to see Helsinki for the first time is to start out by boat. You will walk by the elderly women selling fish and vegetables in the market square and find yourself in front of a beautiful park. You may enjoy a pleasant walk in the park for a few hours and then take the tram. Trams are the perfect way to get around in Helsinki. Watching the old houses, parks, theatres, churches, shops, restaurants and people in the streets, you may have a slightly sad film feeling to it.
The pale summer nights are another wonder in the city. Following the waterfront (滨水区)of the city after sunset, you couldn’t help stopping and listening to the sweet silence, interrupted only by the screaming seabirds and leaving fishing boats.
However, in some way. Helsinki is also the most modern city in northern Europe. You will surely want to visit the white Glass Palace, the modern art museum, and all those extremely popular cafes and design stores.
68. Helsinki is called a city of two colors mainly because of the colors of its______.
A. 19th century white buildings and boats
B. 19th century buildings and passing trams
C. white roads and blue trams
D. old buildings, boats and the sea
69. The best way to see most of Helsinki is to go______.
A. by boat B. by bus C. by tram D. on foot
70. The 19th century buildings, the white Glass Palace and all those popular cafes and design shops show that Helsinki is______.
A. both western and eastern
B. both quiet and noisy
C. both historical and modern
D. both old and new
第四部分 任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。
注意:每个空格只填一个单词。
Quiet Virtue: The Conscientious
The everyday signs of conscientiousness(认真尽责) —being punctual, careful in doing work, self-disciplined, and scrupulous(一丝不苟的) in attending to responsibilities—are typical characteristics of the model organizational citizen, the people who keep things running as they should. They follow the rules, help out, and are concerned about the people they work with. It’s the conscientious worker who helps newcomers or updates people who return after an absence, who gets to work on time and never abuses sick leaves, who always gets things done on deadline.
Conscientiousness is a key to success in any field. In studies of job performance, outstanding effectiveness for almost all jobs, from semi-skilled labor to sales and management, depends on conscientiousness. It is particularly important for outstanding performance in jobs at the lower levels of an organization: the secretary whose message taking is perfect, the delivery truck driver who is always on time.
Among sales representatives for a large American car manufacturer, those who were most conscientious had the largest volume of sales. Conscientiousness also offers a buffer(缓冲) against the threat of job loss in today’s constantly changing market, because employees with this quality are among the most valued. For the sales representatives, their level of conscientiousness mattered almost as much as their sales in determining who stayed on.
There is an air around highly conscientious people that makes them seem even better than they actually are. Their reputation for dependability influences managers’ evaluations of their work, giving them higher evaluations than objective measures of their performance would predict.
But conscientiousness in the absence of social skills can lead to problems. Since conscientious people demand so much of themselves, they can hold other people to their own standards, and so be overly judgmental when others don’t show the same high levels of model behavior. Factory workers in Great Britain and the United States who were extremely conscientious, for example, tended to criticize co-workers even about failures that seemed unimportant to those they criticized, which damaged their relationships.
When conscientiousness takes the form of living up to expectations, it can discourage creativity. In creative professions like art or advertising, openness to wild ideas and spontaneity(自发性) are scarce and in demand. Success in such occupations calls for a balance, however; without enough conscientiousness to follow through, people become mere dreamers, with nothing to show for their imaginativeness.

In the picture the wooden bucket isn’t full just because of one short piece of wood. It is the short piece that stands for writing skill in English study, and I can’t help thinking of my failure in English exams as a result of being unable to write well. It is true that to be full we should lengthen the short piece. To perform well in exams, try to overcome your shortcoming of poor writing. In fact, listening doesn’t equal English study, nor does reading, nor does speaking, but they are regarded as a whole. If so, you will make your brightness clear. Otherwise, you will feel sorry for a single unsatisfaction. What’s worse, the ability that we have is sure to be changed into a disability.
