Last month,I said a final farewell to my lovely old dog,Oscar.I have been missing him terribly.Oscar went everywhere with me.He was my mascot of unconditional love,my loneliness relief and one of the big loves of my life.
Many scientific studies have shown that petting a dog and even having one nearby can reduce stress.Peter Wedderburn,a writer and veterinary surgeon, once said"Dogs become a central part of our lives, offering unconditional love, continual company and an alternative to loneliness.A dog is the ultimate loving companion."
It's no wonder I miss him.Oscar also gave structure to my day.His soft furry rub was my early morning wake-up call, plus his walks punctuated my day with a stress-relieving wander by the canal bank.Since his death,I have found myself lying in bed feeling a little low and unmotivated.I'm also spending hours at my desk and not getting out into the light all day.
I didn't want my mood to spiral downwards,so I have started a new, gentle morning practice. I have decided to put my focus on lighting my fire-both literally and metaphorically.Mornings are cold on my canal boat,so what better way to heat things up than by creating a warming ritual(仪式)。
As I piled up old newspapers, placed four logs on the pile and loaded up smokeless coal,I thought about the"fuel”I wanted to use today-the opportunities and tools available to me.Finally, I struck the match, which symbolized the"spark of inspiration".As the fire started to burn,I wrote about someone or something that had inspired me as the flames slowly heated up the boat.
Oscar naturally lit up my days and life.Without him,I'm having to be more conscious about how I look after my mental health and mood, but I'm now starting to enjoy my new start to the mornings.I still miss my lovely dog,but I always end my morning practice by raising my mug of coffee in gratitude for the privilege of 13 years of love and light that he brought into my life.Love never dies.
58.Why does the author mention scientific studies and quotes from Peter Wedderburn?
A.To introduce the funny stories about Oscar.
B.To illustrate how attachment to dogs forms.
C.To emphasize her sorrow at Oscar's death.
D.To contrast her love for a dog with others'.
59 The underlined phrase"spiral downwards”in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to____
A.darken B.lift C.improve D.swing
60.What did the warming ritual mean to the author?
A.It was a new routine which kept her warm in the morning.
B.She viewed it as a ceremony to mourn her beloved Oscar.
C.She intended the ritual to honor those that had inspired her.
D.It symbolized a departure from her downward feelings.

The British government declared that a"proper piece of work”was being carried out to look into the possibility of linking Scotland to Northern Ireland via a bridge spanning the Irish Sea.At the moment, the leading candidates for the locations of the route are Portpatrick on the Scottish coast and Larne on the Northern Irish coast.
Length aside, there are a number of other significant challenges that such an enormous project would raise. For example, there's the depth of the sea, which at times reaches 300 metres, and the large spans that would be required to let any ships pass under the bridge safely, explained Ian Firth, a structural engineer at the Institution of Civil Engineers.
"One solution might be to use floating foundations."he said."You have a floating pontoon(水上浮台)held below the surface of the water. You still have to get down there and drill holes in the rock down below, but you're now just tying it down with some cables. Then the floating platform is held below the waves-you don't want it at the surface because then you're getting wave action and tidal action. You stand your bridge structures on those floating platforms. That's the sort of thing that potentially could be doable."
Even so,such a structure would still leave those travelling across it at the mercy of high winds and heavy rain, even taking into account any weather shielding measures that could be fitted. However, there may be another solution.
"There's another type of floating structure,a submerged(水下的)floating tunnel. It's not through the rock but under the water,"said Firth."You attach it down, shall we say 20 metres below the water,so that ships can go happily across the top of it,but the thing is actually floating. If you're in your car, you're driving,in effect, through a tunnel. That is a very interesting, and I think really quite potentially practical solution."
But it's early days and there are many factors to consider, such as the ability of the transport links either side of the crossing to cope with additional traffic, and the fact that it may be more efficient to upgrade the existing ferry infrastructure, before any kind of design work could begin.
"At the moment it is an idea and not much more than that.To begin with,we'd need a pre-feasibility study which looks at what the options are so that we can actually frame the range of a feasibility(可行性)study,"said Firth. After that people like me could go away and turn over what the options are.I believe it's possible. But possible' and' affordable' are two different things.I'm not trying to put numbers to it , but it is eye -wateringly expensive, and nothing like it has been attempted before. But we're in the business of finding solutions to challenges. We civil structural engineers are good at that kind of thing."
61.From Paragraphs 1 and 2,engineers may focus efforts on the_of the bridge-to-be.
A.cost B.location C.structure D.reliability
62.What might be the major drawback to the first solution?
A.It is impossible to build a bridge on floating platforms.
B.It takes much labor to tie floating platforms with cables.
C.Wave and tidal action can easily destroy floating platforms.
D.Traffic flow will be subject to severe weather conditions.
63.What can we learn from Firth's words in the last paragraph?
A.Bridge construction is more of an assumption than a detailed plan.
B.Engineers have reached a consensus on the feasibility of the project.
C.They are trying to update the structural design to control costs.
D.Previous similar attempts do help them draw up a feasible plan.
64.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A.Why not float?
B.A bridge too far?
C.Overlooking the Irish Sea
D.Meeting new Scottish friends

Expectations can be tricky and this is no different in the workplace! As I listen to some Baby Boomer managers relate their frustrations about working with Generation Y(Gen Y/ millennials (千禧一代)workers, their two main complaints center on their perceptions of the younger generation's work ethic and sense of entitlement. These managers express that Gen Y workers want the honors of the workplace without putting in the sacrifices to earn them.
The Baby Boomer/Generation Y Conflict is a good title that I often use to describe this new millennium divide between Boomers and Gen Y workers. This conflict comes from different life experiences and generational expectations. Can Baby Boomers and Gen Y just get along? The answer is yes!As managers understand and account for the generational differences, they can move workplace dynamics from frustration and conflict to productivity and mutual understanding. To do so,we have to first understand Boomers and Gen Y.
Born between 1943 and 1960,Boomers,grew up in an environment of social unrest where challenging authority was the norm.As noted in Generations at Work, significant events of the Boomer generation include the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War,the women liberation movement and the Cold War.Boomers reflect that time in many ways:they tend to think they can change the world and they want to fulfill their own individual goals and potential. They come to the workplace confident, prepared to work hard, and expecting to be rewarded for their efforts.
Born between 1980 and 2000,Gen Y workers grew up in an environment of adult attention where monitoring, recognition, and support were the norm.Significant events of their generation include technology, protective parenting, school yard violence and multiculturalism.Gen Y workers reflect this time in many ways:they are the most technically talented generation and they are the most spoiled generation.Gien Y workers come to the workplace with confidence and a continuing expectation of recognition and support independent of results.
With the understanding that Generation Y workers have significantly different life experiences and expectations,Boomer managers can adjust their own interaction style and move from frustration and conflict to mutual understanding and productivity.
Gen Y workers are used to immediate feedback on how they are doing. It comes from their digital world where information is shared frequently and quickly.Give them ongoing feedback.Be sure to balance the feedback:tell them what they did well as well as how they can improve.
Many Gen Y workers are used to multiple supportive adults in their lives who spoiled and praised them. They respond better to coaching that focuses on outcomes than a direct management style.
Boomer managers sometimes make the assumption that Gen Y workers are rude or disrespectful of authority.More often, however,Gen Y workers do not understand normal standards of workplace behavior. For example,Gen Y workers often expect immediate responses from their bosses on whatever they communicate to them. This comes from their life experiences. They have had cell phones at a young age and are masters at communicating through text messages, social media, etc,Further, they are used to calling the adults in their lives and getting immediate attention. They bring these expectations to the workplace.
Boomers are partly responsible for launching some work-and-life balance programs for Gen Y workers. These younger generations have seen the negative effects that work has produced on some Boomers and decided that they want some balance in their lives. Many do not want to work like what Boomers have done.Boomer managers can engage Gen Y workers by supporting workplace flexibility and work-and-life balance. For these younger generations,work-and-life balance is among their top working priorities.
Expectations are hard to manage and different generations have different workplace expectations!Boomer and Gen Y conflict, however, does not have to continue. When Boomer managers understand these differences, they can both adapt their own interaction style and educate others to promote organizational productivity. These generations do not have to continue to collide in the workplace!
65.What can we infer from Paragraph 1?
A.Gen Y workers always dismiss the honors as useless.
B.Boomers complain about the job attitude held by Gen Y.
C.Boomers tend to show little respect for Gen Y's entitlement.
D.Gen Y workers don't care about Boomers' misunderstandings.
66.Paragraphs 3 and 4 are meant to explore
A.the different attitudes towards accepted social norms.
B.the reasons for the frustrations and conflicts at work
C.the shared beliefs that united the two separate generations
D.the outcomes of different parenting on each generation
67.Which of the following could best describe the character of Boomers?
A.Gentle but reserved.
B.Stubborn and jealous.
C.Strict but generous.
D.Ambitious and confident.
68.What do Gen Y workers expect in the workplace?
A.Continual appreciation and assistance unaffected by results.
B.Good results as well as acknowledgement from bosses.
C.Independent advice on how to gain wide recognition.
D.Constant monitoring at work to boost their results.
69. How do Gen Y workers probably want feedback provided?
A.Occasionally by post.
B.Instantly and carefully weighed.
C.Regularly by means of praise.
D.Directly and casually informed.
70.Gen Y workers pay special attention to work-and-life balance because
A.they are accustomed to the comfort of modern life
B.their parents have been paying the same attention to it
C.they don't want to follow in the footsteps of Boomers
D.many sacrifices for honors have been made in the workplace
Millions of people illegally download movies, music and video games every day,and online piracy is a serious and expensive problem.Recent figures show that 90%of files transferred over file-sharing networks are copyrighted. And it's costing the US economy up to$250 billion a year.At the heart of the matter there's a moral question to consider. Is it fair that someone downloads for free in seconds something that took a team of people months of hard work to create?
What are governments doing about online piracy? Some countries have passed tough new laws. The Spanish government has shut down domestic file-sharing websites and blocked access to overseas-based sites. Also, governments are going after high-profile pirates.Kim Dotcom, the owner of Megaupload.com,was arrested in New Zealand, who has been accused of piracy because many people were using his website to swap copyrighted files.
Are laws and arrests really the best way? Many people aren't so sure. The problem is that films are released at different times around the world.Kim Dotcom says that a teenager in Germany, for example, has to wait six months to see a movie that has already come out in the US.So,instead of waiting, they download it illegally.Kim says,"If everybody had access to content at the same time, you wouldn't have a piracy problem."
American company Netflix lets users stream films to their TV.But many complain that Netflix's selection of movies is too small and that there aren't enough new releases. One reason is that studios release films on DVD and then, after a few months, make them available for streaming. But what actually happens is one person buys the DVD,they upload it to a file-sharing site and everyone else downloads it for free.
American law student Srikant believes that if movie studios and record companies want to beat the pirates, they need to make it just as simple and quick to get content legally."I think people would pay for content if it's reasonably priced and it's available when they want it,"he adds.
This is already happening with music.Spotify is a program that lets you stream music to your computer for just E5 per month. And since it was launched in Sweden in 2009,online music piracy in Sweden has dropped by 25%.The key to its success lies in that Spotify has a large range of music, songs are instantly available and the service is reasonably priced.
Easy access isn't the only possible solution.Economist Glenn MacDonald thinks he has the answer. He says record companies should give albums away for free and then make money from tours and merchandising. That's not such a ridiculous idea. The heavy metal group Manowar has made a fortune from their tours, which are full of fans who discovered the band by illegally downloading the music.
Online piracy is a complex and controversial issue. And one thing is for sure:it's not going away anytime soon.

原句语序:a collection of vases is included,故选B。
第40题 根据下面you are not there以及后面的heaven等可知,老师去世了,因此是losing。
I am not sure, but这是英美人士一种惯用的表达。
56-57 BC 58-60 CAD 61-64 CDAB65-70 BBDABC
A篇
第56题 B 定位到TUSHY Classic信息下的“this toilet accessory simply sits beneath your toilet seat and connects to your water source without the need for electricity”可知这个设备是不需要电力连接就可以使用的,故选B。
第57题 C 定位到PureAir FRIDGE信息中的“when power is running low, there is noticeable alarm when the fridge is opened” 当电量不足时,打开冰箱会有明显的报警,故选C。
It's no wonder I miss him“可知第二段写狗狗无私的陪伴是为了突出”我“对Oscar的思念和失去它的悲伤,故选C。
D 根据第四段“I didn’t want my mood to spiral downwards, so I have started a new, gentle morning practice…by creating a warming ritual”可知这个仪式是为了让作者对低落情绪做告别,开始新的生活,故选D。
第62题 D 定位到第四段第一句,“Even so, such a structure would still leave those travelling across it at the mercy of high winds and heavy rain” 可知,第一种结构会让穿越它的人们受到大风和暴雨的影响,也就是这种结构并没有很好地考虑天气因素的影响,故选D。
第63题 A 定位到最后一段第一句“At the moment it is an idea and not much more than that” 可知目前此次桥梁建设项目还是一个想法,仅此而已,故选A。
第67题 D 根据第三段“they tend to think they can change the world and they want to fulfill their own individual goals and potential. They come to the workplace confident…”
第68题 A 我们需要不断寻找闪现在第6-8段的一些关键词,比如 ongoing feedback, balance the feedback, supportive, immediate responses, get immediate attention, praise 这些词与A 选项的continual appreciation与assistance贴得更近。
第69题 B 根据文中第六段“Gen Y workers are used to immediate feedback on how they are doing…Be sure to balance the feedback: tell them what they did well as well as how they can improve”可知他们需要即刻的并且要衡量反馈内容的工作反馈,故选D。
第70题 C 根据文中第九段,“These younger generations have seen the negative effects that work has produced on Boomers and decided that they want some balance in their lives”可知Gen Y是看到了工作对上一代的负面影响,因此想要平衡工作和生活,不想重蹈覆辙,故选C。
第一段第二行...90%of files...are copyrighted.
第一段第三行...it's costing the US economy up to 250bilion a year.
结合二三四段在说相应的对策和问题或者弊端,故填drawbacks/disadvantages。
第二段倒数第二行...who has been accused of piracy...被指控为盗版罪,这里注意题干是with,同义替换为be charged with,故填charged。
Netflix lets their users stream films to their TV.
If everybody had access to the content at the same time, you wouldn't have a piracy problem.
Netflix's selection of movies is too small...电影公司提供的资源选择不多,也就是范围狭小,故填small/narrow/limited。
第七段第二行...give albums away for free and then make money from tours and merchandising.
And one thing is for sure: it's not going away anytime soon.盗版现象依然会存在,也就是需要持久不懈的努力,故填requires/needs/demands。
Having poured ink out of the window and dirtied the public area alongside the neighbor's clothes, a naughty boy was taught to take responsibility by his parents, whose education method won widespread recognition online. (35 words)
I also sing high praises for the couple's parenting style. Specifically, rather than shrink from the terrible consequences of their son's misbehavior, the couple apologized to the neighbors, compensated for their losses and mended the vandalized areas. It is their graceful manner and sincere attitude that leave a deep impression on the badly-behaved son, who, after a deep reflection, will reform himself and turn over a new leaf. The couple also showcase an unconventional way of educating kids, whose effectiveness might far outweigh the traditional methods like beating, abusing or intimidating.
Should a kid commit mistakes, firstly, parents need fully understand the kid's motive behind. Say, if the mistake is made due to the child's improper cognition or value, parents, as their guardian and first teacher, should in no time correct them. Secondly, proper rules and disciplines should be introduced within the family so that a misbehaved kid will have to face the music after he gets his way. Thirdly, parents should work closely with teachers and instill within kids a correct moral sense. After all, the ability to distinguish between right and wrong will guide children to the right track and shape them into an upright future citizen.

The parents of a naughty boy, who troubled his neighbors by pouring ink out of a window, resolved the dilemma immediately and wisely, for which citizens were loud in their praise.
I applaud the couple for their approaches to dealing with the problem. To begin with, they responded actively to neighbours’ complaints and spared no efforts to solve the problem responsibly, contributing to creating a harmonious community. Additionally, reasonable punishment made their son aware of his misbehavior, which reflected the value of education.
No kids will not make mistakes during their growth. When children make mistakes, parents are supposed to act rationally, identifying the reasons behind them and opting for education methods accordingly. Plus, bear in mind that if punishment is necessary, children’s self-esteem should be maintained. It is therefore desirable not to use physical punishment of any sort but to assist them in mending their ways.
Text 1
M: Have you got much homework?
W: I’ve got some art. It doesn’t have to be handed in till Friday. My history essay has to be in tomorrow, though, so I’d better finish that this evening.
Text 2
W: Did I tell you my brother’s working at Scooter — that new designer clothes place?
M: Cool! I’d like to work there as a shop assistant myself.
W: Well, he wanted to do that, but they only needed a security guard. So he was given that job instead.
Text 3
W: The basketball game starts soon.
M: You want to watch that?
W: Well yeah …
M: I am hoping to watch that documentary on animal communication. It’d be useful for my project, and you can watch the chat show you love after it.
Text 4
M: The food’s great and isn’t expensive.
W: Yes. This burger’s as delicious as it looks in the picture, but I thought it would be big.
Text 5
M: I didn’t like the concert yesterday, mainly because the musicians hadn’t practiced enough. They were bad, I think.
W: Really? I think they played well, but I’ve never seen some of those instruments before.
M: It must be interesting to play something new, I guess.
Text 6
M: These sports shoes are my size, but they only have them in green. That wouldn’t be my first choice of color, but I’ll try them on and see how they feel — that’s the most important thing. My old ones were a bit tight.
W: Those look good on you — the color’s really stylish, but most students at our school are wearing black ones these days.
M: Yes, especially the boys in your class. Anyway, these are made from a new kind of material and feel really light. They’re great. I hope I’ve got enough money.
W: Don’t worry. My mum just gave me some money. I can lend it to you.
Text 7
M: I really enjoyed that. I came so close to getting the ball in the net a few times.
W: If you all play as well as that in every game, you should start actually beating some of the other teams.
M: I hope so. We’ve all trained really hard this season, and our new coach has made a big difference. I think I probably played better than usual because Mum and Dad could both get here for once. I’m always cheerful when they do.
W: Well I’m sure they enjoyed it as much as I did.
Text 8
M: Thank you for taking me camping with you last weekend, Aunt Lizzie.
W: It was great, especially when we went swimming. It was too windy to swim in the sea, but the lake was great anyway. Perhaps next time we can try the river.
M: Sleeping in a tent was new for me. I was worried about it on the first night, but I soon found out how exciting it is! My brother was very unhappy that he couldn’t come with us.
W: The campsite was quite big, but it’s a pity there was nowhere to buy food and things. And the showers there were a bit dirty, but OK.
Text 9
M: Jasmine, what made you decide to go on a flying experience day?
W: A friend of mine tried it. Even though she’d been frightened, she told me she’d noticed her house while she was up there. That made me want to look for mine, too. It wasn’t like I wanted to fly planes professionally or anything.
M: How was your flying instructor?
W: She was brilliant. I’d always imagined flying instructors would be cool and quiet people. Jana was like that before we took off but quite different in the air. She chatted with me and made me laugh by saying funny things — she said afterwards she did it to help people relax.
M: And what about the flight?
W: It was one of the most exciting things I’ve ever done, although I was kind of expecting that. When we landed, it felt like we’d been up there for hours, although it was only about 30 minutes in reality. In some of the online reviews, people said they were tired afterwards, but I was just the opposite. And it made me want to try other experience days like horse riding. First on my list, though, would be driving a sports car, and after that would come deep-sea fishing.
Text 10
W: Hello, everyone! I’d like to tell you about this wonderful acting club I joined recently. The best thing about it is the teacher, Alice Fisher, and she’s appearing in a play at the big theater in town now. She plays a policewoman in that, but you’ll probably know her better as the farmer in the series Green Valley that was on last year.
She’s worked as a professional theater actor for about 10 years. As well as having three years’ experience of appearing in serious drama, she’s spent seven years working in comedy productions, so she has lots of different talents.
The classes are always fun and are split into two sections. In the first part, rather than practicing anything to do with movement of the body, we focus instead on how to control the voice as an actor. In the second part, we practice our performance skills.
At the moment, we’re practicing for a play, The Passenger, which will be on at the Town Theater soon. We’re hoping that this latest one will be as popular as the last production the club did, which was called Reality.
We’ve got our last practice for the new play on July 13th, with audiences able to come and see it from July 20th for one week.

第40题 根据下面you are not there以及后面的heaven等可知,老师去世了,因此是losing。
I am not sure, but这是英美人士一种惯用的表达。
