When an earthquake hit a small town，many houses fell down.After the earthquake，all the newspapers reported many stories about some of the families who were in trouble.

One Sunday，when I was reading a newspaper，a special picture touched me.It gave the clothing sizes of each family member.I thought that this would be a good chance to teach my children to help those who were less lucky than themselves.I said to my seven­year­old twins，Brad and Brett，and three­year­old Meghan，“We have so much，and these poor people now have nothing.We'll share what we have with them.”

I filled a box with foods and clothes.While I was doing this，I encouraged the boys to choose their toys and donate some of their less favourite things.Meghan watched quietly as the boys took out their old toys and games and put them together.Then she walked away.A few minutes later，she came back with Lucy，her much­loved doll.She put the doll on top of the other toys.“Oh，dear，”I said.“You don't have to give Lucy.You love her so much.”Meghan said，“Lucy makes me happy，Mummy.Maybe she'll make another little girl happy，too.”

I looked at Meghan for a long moment.She taught me a lesson.It's easy to give something that we don't want any more，but hard to give what we cherish(珍爱)，isn't it?

Buildings crashed to the ground in seconds.Thousands of people lost their lives in a flash.Since they were told an earthquake would hit Tokyo around September 16，Japanese people haven't been able to get these thoughts out of their minds.

They heard the news from Yoshio Kushida，a researcher who used radio waves to predict that an earthquake would strike with a magnitude(量级) of at least seven.“It would be terrible not to warn people of a possible disaster in case a quake actually occurs.”he said.

His warning had a big effect.Frightened Tokyo people have been stocking up on water，food and candles in preparation for the terrible day.

But Kushida hasn't had much support from the experts.At present，predicting earthquakes is thought to be impossible.No one can tell exactly where or when the next major earthquake will occur.An earthquake begins tens of miles below the earth's surface：it's too faraway to see.

Ancient Chinese and Italian scientists forecast earthquakes by special“earthquake clouds”．They found that a week  before an earthquake，there were often strange clouds－shaped like snakes，waves or feathers－in the sky.They thought  the clouds might come from a gas produced underground by an earthquake.

People also used to watch animals to see if earthquakes were coming.When they saw birds fly away suddenly，dogs  barking violently or fish jumping out of the water，they told people to leave the area.Some scientists believed animals had  a sharper sense of changes taking place underground.

But the ancient methods were not reliable enough.Nowadays，scientists use special instruments to predict  earthquakes more precisely(精确地)．

Satellite systems are very useful：they record small changes in the earth's magnetic fields(磁场)which help show where and when an earthquake may strike.

The trouble started at 9：30 p．m.last New Year's Eve，in Newmark.When the fire engines(消防车) arrived at the fire，a very old woman was sitting in a third floor window.The firefighters placed a ladder(梯子) against the wooden house，and 26­year­old Marcus Reddick climbed 35 feet to the third floor.

The woman,60 years old and very fat，was sitting with both feet out of the window.When Marcus reached the top of the ladder，the woman，afraid and nervous，put her two legs around him.Suddenly Marcus fell backwards off the ladder，with the large woman sitting on him.Marcus landed first－hitting a wall beside the front stairs－and broke the woman's fall.She fell no more，but he fell another ten feet down the stairs.When the fire officer reached him，Marcus was unconscious.

Within an hour，a doctor told the men that Marcus was nearly brain dead，and would only get worse.Doctors talked of turning off the life­saving machine and asked if the family would like to give away his heart.The answer was “yes”．

On January 6，firefighters lifted Marcus' coffin(棺材)－covered with an American flag－onto a yellow fire engine.Hundreds of firefighters from all over the state joined the procession(行列) through Newmark streets.Children watched silently from school windows.The day Marcus died，his heart was given away to a young girl.His family said that it was the second life Marcus had saved.
