He liked the Suth，and he sn became，in his wn pinin，a Sutherner.There was much abut the Suth and Sutherners that he wuld never cmprehend；but，with the whleheartedness that was his nature，he adpted its ideas and custms，as he understd them，fr his wn－pker and hrse racing，red­ht plitics and the cde duell，States' Rights and damnatin t all Yankees，slavery and King Cttn，cntempt fr white trash and exaggerated curtesy t wmen.He even learned t chew tbacc.There was n need fr him t acquire a gd head fr whisky；he had been brn with ne.


But Gerald remained Gerald.His habits f living and his ideas changed，but his manners he wuld nt change，even had he been able t change them.He admired the drawling elegance f the wealthy rice and cttn planters，wh rde int Savannah frm their mss­hung kingdms，munted n thrughbred hrses and fllwed by the carriages f their equally elegant ladies and the wagns f their slaves.But Gerald culd never attain elegance.Their lazy，blurred vices fell pleasantly n his ears，but his wn brisk brgue clung t his tngue.He liked the casual grace with which they cnducted affairs f imprtance，risking a frtune，a plantatin r a slave n the turn f a card and writing ff their lsses with careless gd humr and n mre ad than when they scattered pennies t pickaninnies.
