By 1991 their love had deepened, and they were happy.Later that year,Bill developed a white spot on his tongue. He visited a doctor.
One day shortly after that,Bill called Karen to sit beside him.He said with tears in his eyes that he loved her and wanted to live forever with her.The doctor suspected that he had been infected with HIV,the virus that leads to AIDS.
The family was tested.Bill and Karen’s results were positive.Bill had become infected before he met Karen;then he passed the virus on to Karen. The children’s results were negative.Within three years,Bill was dead,“I don’t know how to express what it is like to watch the once handsome man you love and intend to live with forever dying slowly.I cried many nights. He died three months short of ten years of our marriage,” says Karen.Though a doctor told Karen that she would soon follow her husband into death, she is still alive. The infection has progressed to the early stages of AIDS.
Karen is one of about 30 million people now living with HIV/AIDS,a figure larger than the combined populations of Australia,Iceland and Paraguay.According to one UN report,Africa has 21 million of these victims.By the turn of the century that number could reach 40 million and the disease will bring on the greatest disaster in human history.Of the world’s sexually active adults aged 15 to 49,1 in 100 has already been infected with HIV.Of these, only 1 in 10 realizes that he or she is infected. In some parts of Africa,25 percent of adults are infected.
Since the beginning of spread of AIDS in 1981,about 11.7 million people have died of it.It is roughly calculated that in 1997 alone, about 2.3 million people died of it.Nevertheless, there are fresh reasons for optimism in the battle against AIDS.During the past few years, there has been a drop in new AIDS cases in wealthy nations. In addition, promising drugs hold out hope of better health and longer life.

(2018·泰安检测)It would have been a success story if Fullerton High School senior Fernando Rojas, the son of Mexican immigrants whose schooling stopped in the eighth grade, was accepted to college. But the 17yearold achieved a surprising clean sweep—he was accepted to every Ivy League(常春藤)school.
“I didn’t think I would get into any,” Rojas told The Orange County Register on Saturday.“When I got all eight,it was a blessing and a curse because I had to choose.I was excited and scared and everything at the same time.”
The first call came from Yale University in February.Within weeks calls, emails and letters followed from the other seven universities.Rojas also was accepted by Stanford University and two nearby schools, the University of California, Irvine, and California State University, Fullerton.
He is one of four children of Raul Rojas, 59, and wife, Maria, 56, who moved to Fullerton from Jalisco, Mexico, in the early 1980s.
A national speech and debate champion, Rojas reasoned that if he applied to the eight Ivy League schools, he might get into one. Sal Tinajero, Rojas’ speech and debate coach at Fullerton, told the newspaper that Rojas is a hardworking selfstarter who thrives(茁壮成长) on competition.“His biggest motivation for speech and debate was his parents to know that their hard work meant something,” Tinajero said.
After visiting several campuses, he settled on Yale, which costs $64,000 a year with room and board. He is responsible for $6,000; Yale scholarships and federal grant money cover the rest.
He’ll mostly take it easy during the summer before heading to Yale in late August. He’s considering majoring in Latin American studies and perhaps a career as a lawyer or in international affairs.

(2018·合肥高三质检)Many years ago, when we were a young couple with two small children, aged 2 and 4, we were practically impecunious. My inlaws lived from hand to mouth, so we didn’t expect any help from them. My parents lived a great distance away, and I was too ashamed to let them know about our situation.
My husband was trying to earn a living with an old pickup truck, carrying groceries for local shopkeepers, but it was constantly breaking down. It took almost all the money we had to have it fixed. The truck was also the only means of transportation for us.
We lived in the countryside, and we always used the back door because the driveway led to it. One winter evening, I stepped outside to take a bag of trash to the barrel and almost tripped over something. It was nearly dark, and I had to bend down to see what it was. I could hardly believe my eyes. There sat a large basket loaded with food.
It was heavy, so I called my husband to carry it into the house. Once inside, we discovered two loaves of bread, some butter, several cans of vegetables, a can of orange sauce, and a large turkey. There was so much that I couldn’t remember it all, but it was everything we needed to fix a wonderful dinner—everything except potatoes.
A little while later I remembered that I hadn’t taken the trash to the barrel. By now it was dark, so I had to turn on the yard light—and that’s when I spotted a small bag of potatoes sitting on the porch.
That dinner was the best I could remember.
We weren’t able to thank our donators, though, because we never found out who had been so generous in helping a struggling young family. Whoever it was, we are forever grateful.

67.Although/Though/While 解析:考查连接词。“it can be enjoyed at home”和“the best way to experience it is at a smart hotel or café”在意思上是转折关系, 所以此处要用表示让步的Although/Though/While。
68.to enjoy 解析:考查非谓语动词。此处是动词不定式表目的。
69.being asked 解析:考查非谓语动词。avoid后面跟v.ing, 此处应该是“避开被要求”, 所以要用being asked。
70.have tried 解析:考查时态。句意:我相信一旦你(已经)尝试了, 你就会赞成的。根据句意可知,“尝试”的动作会产生“赞成”的结果, 所以这里用现在完成时。
