Luo Dengping has become famous as the only woman in a group of “spider men”who climb cliffs of up to 100 meters high, without ropes or safety equipment of any kind, for the entertainment of tourists in China’s Guizhou Province.
Men of the Miao people, in Southwest China, have been free-climbing steep cliffs for centuries. They originally developed this skill as part of a custom, to lift coffins(棺材)of relatives up the cliffs and place them in small caves or just hang them on the cliffside, like the Tana Toraja tribe, in Indonesia. The Miao spider men continued climbing the vertical cliffs of Ziyun, in order to collect rare medicinal plants. Today, only a few members of the Miao people still practice this ancient tradition, and one of them is a woman.
Traditionally, only Miao men were considered brave and skilled enough to become spider men, but Luo Dengping had no choice but to break social norms and take up the practice. As the daughter of a skilled spider man, and with no brothers to carry on her family’s tradition, Luo began climbing the cliffs near the village when she was just 15 years old. In the beginning, she felt scared and could barely move on the precarious cliffside, but as time went by, she perfected her skills and, eventually, making her way up the giant rocks using nothing but her hands and feet became routine.
In her late teens, Luo Dengping left the village and became a migrant worker at a construction site in Guangzhou. She returned in 2000, married a villager and had two children. To support her husband, who drives freight trucks for a living, she occasionally climbed nearby cliffs in search of medicinal plants to sell. Then, in 2015, the local government decided to promote the karsts mountain as a tourist attraction, and started hiring spider men to practice their skills for entertainment purposes.

As anyone who freelances(做自由职业) knows, there are lots of advantages of working at home alone. But there are drawbacks too, like the potential loneliness. No wonder co-working spaces are becoming so popular: they permit self-employed individuals to feel like they are part of all office environment, while making them get some work done too. But renting a co-working space does cost money.
Now a Swedish project is aiming to change that by turning people’s under-used homes into temporary co-working spaces, available to freelancers for free. Hoffice was started by freelancers Christofer Gradin Franzen and Johline Zandra about a year ago in Stockholm when they invited a few people into their home office to work together. It was a great success, and the project has since spread to a number of cities in Europe, North and South America, Australia, India and Japan. Anyone can sign up and offer their home space as a free co-working space, or find a Hoffice near them.
On a Hoffice day, everyone arrives and starts work at a certain hour. After 45 minutes, everyone gets up to take a break, stretch, do qigong or yoga for 10 to 15 minutes. Afterwards, people can gather around again, and re-state their intentions and goals for the rest of the work day, as a way to motivate each other. Meals can be eaten together at a certain hour, potluck-style(家常饭)or by bringing your own lunch.
This process creates an encouraging and supportive work environment. As some freelancers describe, “By working at Hoffice, we give ourselves and each other the gift to spend our days in a social working environment, where we are extremely productive without ignoring our other human needs. We also make sure to give us and each other what we need to feel calm, happy, inspired and creative during the working day.”
So Hoffice is not just about sharing space; it’s also about a free exchange of ideas. And perhaps the best thing is that Hoffices are free to use.

Text 5 W: The Internet speed in the office was really bad. I spent a lot of time and eventually downloaded the file. M: (5) Maybe we should look for a person to see where the problem lies.
Text 6 M: I didn’t go to the last two classes. What homework have I missed?
W: Loads! (6) There was an essay due this Monday. M: (6) Oh, that was three days ago.
W: Don’t worry. I don’t think it'll be a problem if you don’t do it. There were some more activities on the website. I noticed they won’t be available after tomorrow. Then there were a few pages from our course book to complete. That can wait, though.
M: Okay, thanks, (7) I’ll get on with that online stuff straight away before it’s taken down. I’ll leave the course book until I’ve caught up there.
Text 7 W: Well, I think they were much better than the ones we saw yesterday. What do you think of the house in Eccles? M: Well, I think it was OK-and (8) it was the least expensive place in this area. W: Yes. That was true. M: The wooden floors were lovely, and it had a new kitchen. Also, it seemed slightly bigger than our house.
W: No. I think it was the same size as ours. It just seemed bigger because it had no furniture.
M: Yeah. maybe. W: Anyway, I preferred the house in Monton, because it was built in a traditional style. But it was on a very busy road. (9) It was much noisier than the other two.
Text8 W: Hello, Mr. Harris. (10) I called about your ad in the school paper.
M: Oh, yes. (10) Come in and I’ll show you around. As you can see, it’s one large room divided into a living room and a bedroom. The furniture is not new but it’s good.
W: (11) I like that night table next to the bed.
M: The cupboard on the other side of the bed is big so you have lots of storage space.
W: That’s good. I’ve got a lot of clothes. Could I move the sofa closer to the window? I have a coffee table that would look great with it. M: Yes, you can make any changes you like, as long as you don’t damage anything. W: About cooking? Can I see the kitchen?
M: Yes, of course. It’s over there. You have a stove and refrigerator and a few dishes.
W: Fine. I really like the apartment. And the price in the ad is fine with me.
M: OK. I need one month’s deposit and two references. So, if everything is OK you can move in on. . . (12) today is Wednesday. How about next Monday? W: Perfect. See you then.
Text 9 M: Do you fancy going to see a show tonight? W: Sure! Great idea! What’s on?
M: I’ve got the paper here. I’ll have a look. (13) There’s a circus from Moscow. I love the circus, especially the clowns. W: I don’t find the clowns very amusing. I never have.
M: Oh, OK. Well, let’s forget the circus then. What about this-The Dancing Queen? It’s a musical-I read a review of it in a magazine. It’s supposed to be extremely funny! Shall we go and see that? W: I’m not really into musicals. Is there anything else on?
M: Sure. (14) There’ s Take It or Leave It. t came out last week.
W: What kind of play? M: It’ a comedy.
W: Oh, right. That isn’t my favorite kind of play. In fact, I really don’t like stage comedies at all.
M: Alright. There are lots of other things on. For example, they’re showing an old black and white comedy. Do you like old silent films? W: To be honest, silent films don’t make me laugh.
M: Fine. Let’s forget that, then. How about a more modern film? W: Good idea.
M: Here’s one called Sweet Dating. It’s a romantic comedy.
W: (15) I’m tired of seeing romantic comedies, Sorry.
M: (16) Well, why don’t we just go to the comedy club in the town centre? They always have good comedians there.
W: (16) I’m not a big fan of comedy clubs. But I suppose I could give it a go... M: Great!
    Text 10
Mia is a carbon copy of her sister Ella, and people can hardly tell them apart. They specialize in different fields. Mia has a good comprehensive quality. (17) She majored in electricity at college and successfully entered a famous American technology company after graduation. (18) Because of her outstanding achievements plus her exceptional capacity, soon she was promoted to a senior management position in the company. Now she is one of the company’s core decision makers. Ella is four years older than Mia. Ella adored seeing movies as a child and (19) she became a director when she grew up. A decade ago, my communication with her reminded her of the subject of law. So she decided to shoot a TV series featuring a fair and honest judge. Before the shoot, not only did she carefully learn about the law, but also (20) she sought professional legal advice. The series is scheduled for release in August this year. Despite the tough times in the film and television industry in recent years, the series, which is professional as well as interesting, will surely bring huge economic and social effects to Ella.
Mia and Ella have succeeded in their respective careers, and they are the pride of their parents.
