A quick walk onto a frozen pond could have been a disaster for these two boys.
Cruz Genet, 11, and Anthony Skopick, 10, couldn’t agree. Were the birds out on the ice ducks or geese? There was only one way to find out. So on a cold January evening last year, the two friends walked onto the frozen pond near their homes to get a better look.
First, they threw a rock onto the ice to test it. Convinced the ice would hold their weight, Anthony took a few steps, and then he crashed through the seemingly frozen surface. “There was no sound, no crack,” he told the reporter. “I just fell through instantly.”
Cruz rushed to help his frightened friend. And the pond swallowed him, too. Cruz managed to lift himself out of the water and onto a more solid section. He then cautiously worked his way toward Anthony, but he fell in the pond again. This time, he couldn’t get out.
The boys were in icy cold water and quickly losing feeling in their limbs (四肢). Cruz was sure that he was going to die.
Anthony’s older sister had seen the boys fall through the ice and started screaming for help. John Lavin, a neighbor driving nearby on his way to the store, heard her. He quickly pulled over. Seeing the boys, he grabbed a nearby buoy(浮标), kicked off his shoes, and ran into the water. Lavin made his way to Cruz and Anthony and dragged them back to land. They were taken to hospital, where doctors discovered that their five-minute stay in the water had lowered
their body temperature nearly ten degrees.
Fortunately, the boys have fully recovered, though they are still a little awestruck (敬畏的) by their fearless neighbor. “Just to think,” says Cruz, “if he hadn’t been there, I could have died.”
    24. Why did the boys go to the frozen pond?
    A. They were curious about whether the ice could hold their weight.
    B. They wanted to have a better look at the pond.
    C. They wanted to know what kind of birds were on the ice.
    D. They wanted to go skating on the ice.
    25. Before the boys walked onto the ice, ______.
    A. they argued over who should be the first to go
    B. they threw a rock to test whether the ice was strong enough
    C. they asked Anthony’s older sister to stay nearby to protect them
    D. they grabbed a nearby buoy and kicked off their shoes
    26. What did Cruz do when Anthony fell into the pond?
    A. He went to help his friend.
    B. He went to ask for his sister’s help.
    C. He went to ask for his neighbor’s help.
    D. He went to find a buoy nearby.
    27. From this passage, we can infer that _____.
    A. Anthony’s older sister went to the pond with the two boys.
    B. a strange passer-by saved the two boys.
    C. Cruz fell into the pond with Anthony at the same time.
    D. The two boys were very grateful to their neighbor.

A few years ago, my sister-in-law started to feel concerned about her teenage daughter. What was she doing after school? Where was she spending her time? My niece was an excellent student, and took part in all kinds of after-class activities. Even so, her mom decided to put a tracking(跟踪) app on the kid’s phone.
At first, this made my sister-in-law “feel better”. Then the good situation suddenly ended. She recalled, “I found out that she was someplace that she said she wasn’t. I went out in the middle of the night and found her walking without shoes in the middle of the street with some friends.” Things went quickly downhill for the mother and the daughter after that.
With 73% of teens having their own smartphones now, according to a 2015 Pew study, more and more of their parents are facing the question: To spy or not?
Ana Homayoun, founder of Green Ivy Educational Consulting, has advised many parents and their kids about this. “I’ve found teens are more receptive to tracking apps when it is included as part of a family use agreement to improve safety than when it is placed as a secret tool to watch them,” she said.
Mark Bell, a father of a teenage girl, said, “We don’t have tracking apps, but we have set some ground rules that my daughter must follow in exchange for us providing a smartphone,” he said. For example, his daughter must “friend” him on social media accounts so that he can review posts, and must share all passwords.
When you’re trying to build trust, you need to create an environment that encourages it. So, to win their trust, you always need to be straight with your children. “Parents must let children know how and when they’ll be watching them,” said Doctor Pauleh Weigle. If they’re not open about it, he warns, it can “greatly damage the parent and child relationship”.
28.Why did the author’s sister-in-law use the app?
A, She was interested in new apps.
    B. She was worried about her daughter.
    C. She wanted to know about after-class activities.
    D. She wanted to teach her daughter about the app.
29.What can we learn about today’s children from Homayoun?
A, They doubt family use agreements.
    B. They are worried about online safety.
    C. They welcome the use of tracking apps.
    D. They dislike being spied on secretly with tracking apps.
    30.According to Paragraph 5, Bell’s daughter .
    A. kept him out of her online groups
    B. developed some bad online habits
    C. allowed him to know her online behavior
    D. wanted to put a tracking app on her phone
31.What should be done before using a tracking app according to Weigle?
    A. Tell the kid about it.
    B. Check the kid’s phone.
C Teach the kid how to use it.
    D. Advise the kid to use his phone less.
    D
If you have ever been disappointed because you don’t have a good gardener, the clever robot may one day become the helper of your indoor plants.
The Hexa Plant is a six-legged robot that has been specially made to care for the potted (盆栽的)plant that it carries on top of its head. Using light and heat sensors (传感器), the robot has the ability to carry its plant in and out of the daylight. If the houseplant needs more sun, the Hexa will walk into the sunlight; and if the houseplant is getting too hot, the Hexa will go back into the area that blocks direct light. The Hexa Plant will even do a little dance when it senses that the plant needs to be watered to warn its owner.
The robot was developed by Vincross engineer and founder Sun Tianqi after he saw a dead Sunflower sitting in the darkness in a room back in 2014. “Plants only receive an action without responding,” Sun Tianqi wrote in a blog post. “Whether they are being cut, bitten, burned or pulled from the earth, or when they haven’t received enough sunshine, water, or are too hot or cold, they will hold still and take whatever is happening to them.”
According to Sun Tianqi, for billions of years, plants have never experienced movement of any kind, not even the simplest movement. In their whole lives, they stick to where they were born. Sun Tianqi continued, “Do they want to break their own settings or have a tendency (趋向) towards this? I do not know the answer, but I would love to try to share some of this human tendency and technology with plants. With the help of the robot, plants can experience the move.”
The Hexa Plant model robots are not for sale, though Vincross does sell a Hexa robot model. It is said that in the near future the robots can open up a new market to watch over our household plants.
    32. What can we learn about theHexa Plant?
    A. It helps indoor plants get proper sunlight.
    B. It waters the plants through dancing.
    C. It helps people do some gardening.
    D. It carries the potted plant with its hands.
    33. What does the author try to show through Paragraph 3?
    A. The way plants spend their whole lives.
    B. The common way people deal with plants.
    C. The difference between plants and humans.
    D. The cause of making the indoor plants’ helper.
    34. What does Sun Tianqi try to do using this technology?
    A. To develop gardening skills.
    B. To draw people’s attention to plants.
    C. To make plants experience move.
    D. To study the living conditions of plants.
    35. What can be the best title for the text?
    A. A New Market for Robots
    B. An Indoor Plants’ Helper
    C. An Important Development in Gardening
    D. The Tendency of Gardening in the Future

    A possible version:
    Dear Tim,
In your last letter, you said that you have met some problems and felt anxious. I am writing to comfort you and offer you some advice.
It is natural for one to feel uncomfortable in a different country. Therefore, you can arrange for an outing to relax yourself while admiring wonderful views along the way and experiencing some Chinese culture. Besides, since working out proves effective when one feels down, why not have a go? You need to be positive about yourself and your body. It is also suggested that you should make friends at your school to keep yourself from loneliness.
Cheer up. Things will work out for the best. I wish you would soon get it over and enjoy your study and life in Beijing.
    Yours,
    Li Hua

    (Text 4)
M: Gill, guess who I saw yesterday in the museum shop! Your cousin — the one who was working at that health club last summer …
W: Tom?! At the museum? That’s impossible! He’s working in a post office in London now. He hardly ever comes home.
    (Text 5)
W: Would you like to book another driving lesson for Friday, Rob?
M: I’ll be away for a camp. Is Saturday any good?
W: Let me check. Ah, I’m sorry I’m not free then. What about next Monday?
M: Fine. Perhaps Dad will let me practice in his car at the weekend.
    (Text 6)
W: Hi, Tom. I’ll have to leave school at the end of the first lesson to see a doctor.
M: So you’ll be here for maths?
W: That’s right, but not for art. I’ll be back at school for geography so I’ll see you there.
M: OK. Did you do your art homework? I can give it to the teacher for you.
    W: That’s great. Thank you.
    (Text 7)
W: Daddy, I’m back. What’s the result of the football game?
M: Good news! My favourite team won. Did you and Mum have a good shopping trip? Did you get your new school dress?
W: No, they didn’t have my size. But I found this great jacket — look!
M: Very nice! So what did you buy for me? You know I need a new sweater.
W: Sorry, Dad. Mum bought a hat, but there’s nothing for you!
    (Text 8)
M: Hello, is that Anna? This is Colin.
W: Hi, Colin, how are you?
M: I’m OK, but I’m looking for a summer holiday job. I’m wondering if you can help.
W: Are you? My dad needs another assistant in his shop.
M: Working with you? Tell me something about the job.
W: Well, it’s full-time, five days a week, during my whole summer holiday. I get four pounds fifty an hour, but at first you’ll get four pounds. Some people get five pounds.
M: Is there somewhere to eat near the shop, or do you take something from home for your lunch?
W: Most days I take sandwiches from home. There’s a park around the corner and I usually eat them in the park.
M: Perhaps I’ll go to see your dad. Where is the shop exactly?
    W: It’s in Pine Street.
M: Thanks, Anna. Goodbye. Wish me luck!
    (Text 9)
M: It’s Grandpa’s birthday next week. We must have a surprise party!
W: A party? Do you like loud music, and food everywhere?
M: Well, but Grandpa will like. You know he’s a jazz fan.
W: OK. Where will we have it?
M: Hm, our house, I suppose. Hotels are expensive — and it’s too cold for a garden party at this time of year.
W: What food shall we have?
M: Oh, I’ll make some pizzas, and I’m sure grandma will make a birthday cake. Would you like to make some salads?
W: Yes. OK. And what present can I give him?
M: Let’s think. I’m giving him a scarf and I know grandpa has bought a hat last month, so not those. What about a book? He reads a lot.
W: OK. Oh, when will the party be?
M: Well, his birthday’s on Thursday, so we could do it on Friday — no, Saturday. That’s the best day for a party.
    (Text 10)
W: Hello. This is a recorded message from the Cambridge Sports Centre. There is nobody here to speak to you right now, but please listen to this important information.
The centre is open Monday to Friday from eight o’clock in the morning until ten at night and from 9:00 in the morning until 7 in the evening on Saturdays and Sundays. Many sports are available here, for example, basketball, tennis and football. And considering the popularity of tennis last year, we have increased 2 coaches this year. You don’t need your own equipment, because we have equipment for you and you can check the prices on the notice board. But you’d better bring your own drinks.
If you buy a six-month season ticket for fifty pounds, we have a special gift for you. With your six-month ticket, we will give you a free T-shirt from our new sports clothes shop. And one more thing to remember: we can only accept credit card bookings. It’ll be more convenient than by check and you don’t have to take too much cash on you.
Thank you for calling the Cambridge Sports Centre. See you soon!
