My son Sam is 16 and autistic(自闭症的). There’s a lot going on in that beautiful and brilliant mind of his, but even on a good day he can be easily at a loss. Throw in some diagnosed anxiety, an inability to read social cues(提示) and an unexpected change to his daily routine, and you have the way to deal with a very public breakdown(精神崩溃).
It was Sam’s very first day at high school. We’d set up a plan for how he’d get home: I’d pick him up outside the shop near his school at 3:30 pm and I believed this was a perfect plan. Unknown to me, very bad weather was on its way and I was unable to warn him to take shelter.
With the combination of his dead phone battery and my dead car battery, I was running late and unable to communicate that to him. As a result, he was left alone and extremely frightened. He became very upset outside the shop, exactly where I’d told him to wait.
This was when a beautiful older Vietnamese lady not only went to check on him, but took him inside her shop, calmed him down, got my phone number from him and called me.
Five years later he continued to go into her shop every afternoon, bought a drink, had a chat and she sent him home with enough bread and rolls to feed a small nation.
Sam will graduate this year, and I’m increasingly feeling the need to drop by the shop to let this wonderful lady know that she has saved Sam, and that she has saved me. I’m not sure if I can communicate all of this, but at least I will get to thank her.
There are people I will not get to thank, though—the many kind strangers who have been there for Sam. And believe me, if you’re wondering if this world is a complete mess right now, I’m here to say that it is not.
So I guess this is a love letter to those of you who have helped a stranger out of the goodness of your heart. Please know you are appreciated, and that your beautiful heart and kindness are appreciated, and perhaps unknowingly, you have made a great difference in someone’s life.

It’s thought that around 5 trillion pieces of plastic are currently floating in our oceans.
Both mammals and fish benefit from the clean ocean. It is reported that more than 8 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans every year, and nearly half of the plastic we produce is singleuse only.
This shoe brand, however, is riding the wave of change and is on a mission to help clean up our waters and rid the sea of plastic bottles that can take up to 400 years to break down. Vivobarefoot’s newest footwear uses recycled plastic materials and has created an education program that spreads awareness about how harmful plastic is for sea life.
Every pair of shoes is made up of 17 plastic water bottles taken from the ocean and turned into a sustainable, comfortable pair of shoes, which are also healthy for your feet. And while not everyone can take part in ocean cleanups, choosing little ways we can give back to our planet goes a long way.
Vivobarefoot’s new products include a variety of highperformance styles such as casual sneakers, running shoes, and hiking boots. The brand hopes that its latest initiative(新方案) will help lessen the indifference to pollution and how harmful it is for all living beings.
In the future, Vivobarefoot hopes to increase their production of shoes created from sustainable materials, and thankfully, it is now one of many brands that aim to increase environmentalism and educate communities on how global warming affects everyone.
This year, they’ll add more recyclable and traceable materials into more than half of their production line, and they have plenty of creative developments in the works as well.
The shoes also have a health benefit. Based on the concept that wider, minimally designed shoes enable our foot to function at maximum potential, wearers also experience better balance and sensory input.
8.How does the author make his point convincing?
A.By listing figures. B.By telling a story.
C.By giving examples. D.By making comparisons.
9.What is Vivobarefoot doing to help with the marine creatures?
A.Donating money to buy food for them.

Classifying things is critical for our daily lives. For example, we have to detect spam mail(垃圾邮件), false political news. When we use AI, such tasks are based on “classification technology” in machine learning—having the computer learn, using the boundary separating positive and negative data. For example, “positive” data would be photos including a happy face, and “negative” data photos that include a sad face. Once a classification boundary is learned, the computer can determine whether certain data are positive or negative.
However, the difficulty with this technology is that it requires both positive and negative data for the learning process, and negative data are not available in many cases. For instance, when a retailer(零售商) is trying to predict who will make a purchase, they can easily find data on customers who have purchased from them(positive data), but it is basically impossible to obtain data on customers who have never purchased from them(negative data), since they do not have access to their competitors’ data.
According to lead author Takashi Ishida from RIKEN AIP, “Previous classification methods could not cope with the situation where negative data were not available, but we have made it possible for computers to learn with only positive data, as long as we have a confidence score for our positive data, constructed from information such as buying intention or the active rate of app users. Using our new method,_we can let computers learn a classifier only from positive data equipped with confidence.”
According to Ishida, “This discovery could expand the range of applications where classification technology can be used. Even in fields where machine learning has been actively used, our classification technology could be used in new situations where only positive data can be gathered due to data regulation or business constraints(限制). In the near future, we hope to put our technology to use in various research fields, such as natural language processing, computer vision, robotics, and bio-informatics.”
12.How can the computer distinguish the positive data from the negative data?
A.By learning the classification boundary.
B.By updating the data collected regularly.
C.By separating happy faces and sad ones.
D.By introducing classification technology.
13.Why is the example mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A.To prove how important the positive data are.
B.To confirm that data on customers are complete.
C.To argue that retailers get their competitors’ data.
D.To explain why negative data are hard to acquire.
14.What do the underlined words “new method” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Analyzing buying intention.
B.Building a confidence score.
C.Assessing the active rate of app users.
D.Equipping the computer with confidence.
15.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The History of Classification Technology
B.Smarter AI: Machine Learning Without Negative Data
C.Bigger Data: Computers Assisting Language Processing
D.The Comparison Between Positive Data and Negative Data

参考范文:
Dear Bob,
I’m writing in the hope that you will be kind enough to do me a favor. When it comes to papercutting, there is no denying that it enjoys a great reputation in my hometown. For a long time I have been longing to write an appealing article to make it better known. However, only when I put the idea into practice did I find that my English is far from satisfaction.
As far as I’m concerned, you have a good command of written English, which impresses me a lot. Would you like to do me a favor to have my draft polished? I will pay you a visit at your earliest convenience.
I would appreciate it if you could take my request into consideration.
Yours,

第二节 书面表达
参考范文:
Dear Bob,
I’m writing in the hope that you will be kind enough to do me a favor.
Yours,
Li Hua
