Thomas Hardy, probably the most searching and knowledgeable novelist of his time, was born on June 2, 1840, in Dorsetshire, England. He died on January 11, 1928. In his youth, Hardy read much and dreamt of becoming a poet, but he studied and practiced architecture as an assistant to a London architect, winning a prize for design. The fine descriptions of structure in his novels were probably somewhat due to his architectural training.
For five years Hardy worked hard to practice writing poetry, but when he was twentyseven, he turned to fiction. His first novel finished by 1867, but according to the advice of George Meredith he decided not to publish it. After he abandoned his first novel, his another novel Desperate Remedies, appeared in 1871. During the next twentyfive years he published ten more novels and two collections of short stories.
Under the Greenwood Tree(1872) was never surpassed(超越) in happy and delicate perfection of art. This and his next novel, A Pair of Blue Eyes(1873), began to show deep irony(讽刺) which is so obvious throughout Hardy’s writings.
Far from the Madding Crowd(1874) was his first popular success. It shows Hardy’s amazing power of describing nature as symbolic background for his characters, an organic part of the action of his story. This was the earliest of what he called his novels of character and environment, which included The Return of the Native, Tess of the d’Urbervilles, his masterpiece, and Jude the Obscure. Not until he was fiftyeight years old was his first collection of poems published, and he was sixtyfour when the first part of his drama The Dynasts surprised the literary world.
1.How did Thomas Hardy benefit from his architectural career?

2.What is Thomas Hardy’s Under the Greenwood Tree considered to be?

Stan Lee, cofounder of the Marvel Universe(漫威宇宙) and cocreator of many of its most popular superheroes, died at the age of 95.
Lee was born Stanley Martin Lieber in New York in 1922. As a son of workingclass Jewish immigrants from Romania, times were hard and he lived with his family in a shabby singlebedroom apartment. After graduating from high school at 16, Lieber landed a job as an assistant at Timely Comics. By the early 1940s, he was a temporary editor for the company. It was at this time that he began using his pen name-Stan Lee. In 1947, two years after returning from serving for the U.S. Army, Lee married his wife, Joan. The two began their 70year marriage and had two children.
In the late 1950s, DC Comics breathed new life into its classic superhero and experienced a significant success with its updated version of the Flash, and later with superteam the Justice League of America.
To compete against DC Comics, Lee was given the task of creating their own group of superheroes. In 1961, Timely Comics changed its name into Marvel Comics after Atlas Comics, and that November saw the debut(首次亮相) of the Fantastic Four. Lee’s later famous and lasting creations of comicbook superheroes included SpiderMan, the Hulk, Thor, Iron Man and the XMen.
Over the course of his career, Lee was an icon of Marvel Comics. As a writer and editor and, at various points, both the publisher and vice president of Marvel Comics, Lee not only introduced interesting characters to the industry, but changed the way that comic books came together. I went to a New York Mets’ fantasy camp in 1995, an incredible experience. I was fortunate to be on a team whose pitching coach was Mel Stottlemyre, the former Yankees’ star pitcher(投手) and Mets’ and Yankees’ coach. I was upset when Mel died of cancer on Jan. 13, 2018, at the age of 77.
He was warm, friendly and treated us as if we were major leagues. He asked me whether I would like to pitch and showed me how to throw a “twoseamer”, a fastball that tends to sink, as well as a straight fourseam fastball. I knew that pitching was not for me. At age 45, my experience in organizing baseball was limited to a couple of years in Little League in the Bronx, and softball games as an adult. Mel eventually left the Mets and became the pitching coach for the Yankees. I followed his career and knew about his diagnosis(诊断) of multiple myeloma, a blood cancer, in April 2000, and a stemcell transplant.
In the summer of 2002, I was diagnosed as multiple myeloma and was told that I needed a stemcell transplant by the same group of doctors at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center that had treated Mel.
This shocked me, and frankly, I became quite depressed. I vowed that somehow I would try to speak to Mel. One day, my phone rang. Mel was calling from the Yankees’ locker room. I asked him to tell me everything about his treatment. He spent 30 minutes generously explaining all the details. I hung on every word. He told me how well he was feeling and ended the conversation by giving me his home phone number! “I feel great, and I’m not retiring,” he told me.
This incredible experience lifted my spirits. Every time I saw Mel during games on TV as I awaited my transplant, I repeated to myself, “Look at Mel. If he can do it, so can I.”
8.Why did the author say he was lucky in paragraph 1?
A.He joined a famous team.
B.He met an unusual coach.
C.He was successfully cured.
D.He was chosen as a pitcher.
9.What do we know about the author?
A.He was not skilled in pitching.
B.He was a good baseball player.
C.He called Mel for his treatment.
D.He forgot what Mel had told him.
10.How old was Mel when he was diagnosed as multiple myeloma?
A.23. B.45. C.59. D.61.
11.What would be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Skills Taught by My Former Coach
B.The Transplant Given by the Same Doctors
C.My Baseball Team Helping Me Out
D.My Coach’s Spirits Shining on Me

Though not as much as in the past, grandparents are the teachers of the Navojo(纳瓦霍人) youth. They make young people aware of life at an early age. The parents allow them the privilege of teaching the children, and the grandparents take great pride in raising them.
Young children often stay with their grandparents for years at a time, developing a close and trusting relationship. The grandparents teach them Navajo legends and the principle of life, emphasizing both new culture trends and the preservation of traditions.
The grandparents are also the leading figures in teaching the youth the arts of weaving, caring for the livestock, using herbal medicine, and other arts and crafts.
The children are taught to respect their elders, care for them, help them and learn from them. Young people are urged to listen with care to the words of their elders and keep as much wisdom as possible. Grandparents often go to social gatherings and traditional events, and young people have opportunities to learn more about their culture and traditions.
I lived with my grandmother for thirteen years, and she raised me in the old ways of our people. Although I was going to school, she taught me as much as she could about our traditions. If I had a chance, I would listen again to her wise teachings, expressed with kindness in a soft voice that touched my heart.
We used to plant corn and pumpkin every summer. They never grew big enough to feed us, but we planted them anyway. I asked my grandmother why. She said, “Grandson, our plants will be far more beautiful than the flowers outside the fence.” I didn’t understand until one day I saw their beauty as I was coming over the hill with her. She said, “Anything that is a part of you is always far more beautiful than the things which you pass by.” We had some beautiful years together. I’m glad she is a part of me and I’m a part of her.
Children used to be well disciplined, possessing more respect for culture, traditions and beliefs than they do now. The world of the Navajo has been influenced by the western world, and the grandparents have less control and influence than they used to. But the young people who have been touched by their teachings have glimpsed a way of life beyond what most people know today.
12.What can be inferred from the first paragraph?
A.Grandparents are the source of traditional culture.
B.Parents hate to take the trouble to raise their children.
C.Early schooling isn’t every popular with the young Navojo.
D.Children learn about the meaning of life from their grandparents.
13.The underlined word “figures” in Paragraph 3 probably means “ ”.
A.persons B.pioneers
C.examples D.representatives
14.Why did the author’s grandmother plant corn and pumpkin?
A.She had to feed her family members.
B.She tried to make full use of her garden.
C.She wanted her grandson to learn a life lesson.
D.She expected her grandson to learn about farming.
15.What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A.To honor his beloved grandmother.
B.To stress the greatness of the Navajo.
C.To share with readers a kind of Navajo culture.
D.To show the influence of Navajo traditions.

第二节 书面表达
参考范文:
Dear Sir/Madam,
I’m Li Hua, an exchange student from China during this summer vacation. I’m exceptionally delighted to learn that volunteer students are wanted for a Chinese painting exhibition to be held in the local art gallery. Now I’m writing to apply for the position.
The reasons for my application are as follows. First of all, having been exposed to foreign teachers since a young age, I can communicate freely with others in English. What’s more, years of being monitor makes me a brilliant organizer, which will help a lot to keep the exhibition in order. The most important factor is that my related knowledge will undoubtedly help the audience learn more about the unique Chinese art form.
All in all, my sense of responsibility will make me a qualified volunteer. I’d appreciate it if you could take my application into consideration. Nothing can delight me so much as your early response.
Yours,
Li Hua

Yours,
Li Hua
