第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
The idea of being able to walk on water has long interested humans greatly.Sadly, biological facts prevent us ever accomplishing such a thing without artificial aid—we simply weigh too much, and all our mass pushes down through our relatively small feet, resulting in a lot of pressure that makes us sink.
However, several types of animals can walk on water. One of the most interesting is the common basiliskBasilicus basilicus,a lizard native to Central and South America. It can run across water for a distance of several meters, avoiding getting wet by rapidly hitting the water’s surface with its feet. The lizard will take as many as 20 steps per second to keep moving forward. For humans to do this,we’d need huge feet that we could bring up to our ears in order to create adequate“hitting”.
But fortunately there is an alternative: cornflour. By adding enough of this common thickening agent to water (and it does take a lot),you can create a“non-Newtonian”liquid that doesn’t behave like normal water. Now,if the surface of the water is hit hard enough, particles in the water group together for a moment to make the surface hard.Move quickly enough and put enough force into each step, and you really can walk across the surface of an adequately thick liquid of cornflour.
Fun though all this may sound,it’s still rather messy and better read about in theory than carried out in practice. If you must do it,then keep the water wings handy in case you start to sink—and take a shower afterward!
21.What do we know aboutBasilicus basilicusfrom the passage?
A.Its unique skin keeps it from getting wet in water
B.Its huge feet enable it to stay above water.
C.It can run across water at a certain speed.
D..It is light enough to walk on water.
22.What is the function of the cornflour according to the passage?
A.To create a thick liquid.
B.To turn the water into liquid.
C.To help the liquid behave rapidly.
D.To enable the water to move normally.
23.What is the author’s attitude toward the idea of humans’walking on water?
A.It is risky and beneficial.
B.It is interesting and worth trying.
C.It cannot become a reality.
D.It is impractical though theoretically possible.

Would it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees communicate with each other and pass on their wealth to the next generation?
UBC Professor Simard explains how trees are much more complex than most of us ever imagined.Although Charles Darwin thought that trees are competing for survival of the fittest,Simard shows just how wrong he was.In fact, the opposite is true:trees survive through their co-operation and support, passing around necessary nutrition“depending on who needs it”.
Nitrogen and carbon are shared through miles of underground fungi networks, making sure that all trees in the forest ecological system give and receive just the right amount to keep them all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed,it affects all.
Simard talks about“mother trees”,usually the largest and oldest plants on which all other trees depend. She explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transporting important minerals to young trees so they may continue to grow. When humans cut down“mother trees”with no awareness of these highly complex“tree societies”or the networks on which they feed,we are reducing the chances of survival for the entire forest.
“We didn’t take any notice ofit,”Simard says sadly.“Dying trees move nutrition into the young trees before dying, but we never give them chance.”If we could put across the message to the forestry industry,we could make a huge difference towards our environmental protection efforts for the future.
24.The underlined sentence“the opposite is true”in Paragraph 2 probably means that trees .
A.struggle for survival
B.protect their own wealth
C.depend on each other
D.provide support for dying trees
25.“Mother trees”are extremely important because they .
A.look the smallest in size in the forest
B.pass on nutrition to young trees
C.seem more likely to be cut down by humans
D.know more about the complex“tree societies”
26.The underlined word“it”in the last paragraph refers to .
A.how“tree societies”work
B.how trees grow up.
C.how young trees survive
D.how forestry industry develops
27.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Old Trees Communicate Like Human being
B.Protect Young Trees In Need
C.Trees Are More Awesome Than You Think
D.Trees Contribute To Our Society

In America, when the eighth-graders leave the middle school, they are often worried about moving to the high school. It is a hard time for them, but it can be an exciting one as well. To make it easier, students need to get familiar with their school.
Even though they’ve done this already in the middle school, it’s still important to find where their classrooms are. Most schools take students to the high school for a visit at the end of their eighth grade year. And, most schools also have a freshman speech for parents and students before the first year begins. One way to know your high school more and make new friends is to join a club or play a sport. Schools often offer chances to join different clubs and sports. Fall activities begin in August before the first day of school. If you are not interested in sports, there are clubs for any interest, such as drama, dance, chess, photography, community service, etc. . Students from different grades are allowed to join these clubs. By joining an activity, students can find new friendships, not to mention improving their chances in future college applications. Gradually, the staircase that led to the garret, and even the passage-way to the staircase, were avoided by every one in the house, from every one fearing to speak of it, and the legend was gradually falling into desuetude. It had suddenly occurred to Cassy to make use of the superstitious excitability, which was so great in Legree, for the purpose of her liberation, and that of her fellow-sufferer.
The sleeping-room of Cassy was directly under the garret. One day, without consulting Legree, she suddenly took it upon her, with some considerable ostentation, to change all the furniture and appurtenances of the room to one at some considerable distance. The under-servants, who were called on to effect this movement, were running and bustling about with great zeal and confusion, when Legree returned from a ride.
"Hallo! you Cass!" said Legree, "what's in the wind now?"
"Nothing; only I choose to have another room," said Cassy, doggedly.
"And what for, pray?" said Legree.
"I choose to," said Cassy.
"The devil you do! and what for?"
"I'd like to get some sleep, now and then."
"Sleep! well, what hinders your sleeping?"
"I could tell, I suppose, if you want to hear," said Cassy, dryly.
"Speak out, you minx!" said Legree.
"O! nothing. I suppose it wouldn't disturb _you!_ Only groans, and people scuffing, and rolling round on the garre, floor, half the night, from twelve to morning!"
"People up garret!" said Legree, uneasily, but forcing a laugh; "who are they, Cassy?"
Cassy raised her sharp, black eyes, and looked in the face of Legree, with an expression that went through his bones, as she said, "To be sure, Simon, who are they? I'd like to have you tell me. You don't know, I suppose!"
With an oath, Legree struck at her with his riding-whip; but she glided to one side, and passed through the door, and looking back, said, "If you'll sleep in that room, you'll know all about it. Perhaps you'd better try it!" and then immediately she shut and locked the door.
Legree blustered and swore, and threatened to break down the door; but apparently thought better of it, and walked uneasily into the sitting-room. Cassy perceived that her shaft had struck home; and, from that hour, with the most exquisite address, she never ceased to continue the train of influences she had begun.
