I had just won a bidding for a 1950s cookie tin full of memories at an estate sale (不动产出售). Delighted at my victory, I took the box and gave it a shake. The contents rattled. Inside were hundreds of buttons, pins, and other items, all glittering in the sunlight. As a girl, I'd always enjoyed digging through my mom's box, just as my daughters enjoyed looking through mine.
My eye caught the movement of a swing on the front porch of the house. An old woman
watched the happenings in her yard. As I carried my purchases to my car, I stopped to chat with her. She told me she was selling almost all her possessions because she was moving to a nursing home.
Her eyes fell to the button box, and when she looked up, they were glistening with tears. I took
the lid off the tin, and her rough hands lifted a handful of buttons and then slowly dropped them back into the container. Her fist closed around a delicate pearl button, now yellow with age. "It was from my first husband's uniform," she said. "It's one of the few things that remind me of him when he didn't return home alive." They had been married seven months before he left to serve his country in World War II.
As we sifted through the box together, we found hairpins ranging from black to brown to
shades of gray and even white; a key to a music box that played a special love song; garter clips, wooden nickels, ruby buttons; all took her further down memory lane. I learned about her wedding, the birth of her children, and much more of the life she'd led for 89 years.
After our chat, I set the woman's box of memories down on the swing and slid my hands into
hers. I knew we would talk again, when I went to visit her at her new home. And I knew that when l reached my own home, my heart would pull me to my sewing room, where I would rediscover my own lifetime of memories in my own button box.
24. How did the author feel when she got the tin?
A. Curious. B. Regretful. C. Embarrassed. D. Joyful.
25. What can we infer about the old woman from the text?
A. She was the former owner of the cookie tin.
B. She didn't marry again after her husband died.
C. She had to sell many things to make ends meet.
D. 英语试题 第4页(共10页)She was to sell her house and move to a new one.

Buying green is now popular with many consumers. We choose environmentally friendly products, and we try to be conscious consumers. However, new research by the University of
Arizona has found that it has no positive effect on psychological well-being. It also has a more
limited environmental benefit than the other option simply buying less.
The study followed 968 young adults over a number of years. Throughout the study, participants responded to online survey questions about their subjunctive well-being, their life satisfaction and their psychological distress (悲伤), as well as giving information about their levels of materialism and pro-environmental(有利于环境的) behaviors.
The study found that reduced consumption buying less, repairing items instead of replacing
them, avoiding impulse purchases and so on was linked to a higher level of personal well-being and a lower level of psychological distress, but green buying did not show such links.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the study also found that young people with more materialistic values
were less likely to engage in reduced consumption. This group did, however, engage with buying green activities. Researcher Sabrina Helm suggests that this may be because buying green is still buying so it still satisfies the materialists urge to accumulate new items. These people are called “green materialists”.
However, green materialists must still deal with the same consumption-related stresses as
average materialists. If you buy and own a lot of stuff, it takes up a lot of head space. You have to worry about how to pay for it, and you have to manage all the stuff, worrying about how to keep it safe and how to keep it organized. As Helm notes, “The key is to reduce consumption and not just buy green stuff. Having less and buying less can actually make us more satisfied and happier.”
Understanding how materialistic values affect consumer behaviors, and how those behaviors
in turn affect personal well-being, is important. However, Helm acknowledges that for many consumers, changing behaviors to consume less will be challenging. “We’ve been told since childhood that there’s a product for everything and it’s OK to buy, and it’s a good thing because that’s how the economy works,” She Said.
28. What is the difference between buying less and buying green?
A. Buying green brings more life satisfaction.
B. Buying less promotes personal well-being.
C. Buying less is based on materialistic values.
D. Buying green benefits the environment more.
29. Which of the following problems does a green materialist usually have to face?
英语试题 第5页(共10页)A. The burden of ownership. B. Worries about how to stay safe.
C. Stresses from average materialists. D. The difficulty in finding green products.
30. What does Helm words in the last paragraph indicate?
A. It’s good to buy what is needed. B. It is natural to buy and sell things.
C. It’s not easy to make people buy less. D. It’s important to be wise consumers.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Materialistic Values in Behaviors B. Changes in Consumer Culture
C. Green Consumption for the Planet D. Buying Less for Your Happiness
D
You awake with a pounding heart and sweaty hands. Relax, you think to yourself — it was just
a bad dream. But are nightmares truly harmless? Psychologists aren’t so sure. Although some continue to believe bad dreams reduce psychological tensions by letting the brain act out its fears, recent research suggests that that ordeals are more likely to increase anxiety in waking life.
In one study Australian researchers asked 624 high school students about their lives and
nightmares during the past year and assessed their stress levels. It is well known that stressful experiences cause nightmares, but if nightmares serve to ease that tension, troubled sleepers should
have an easier time coping with emotional problems. The study, published in the journal Dreaming,
did not confirm that hypothesis (假设) : not only did nightmares not reduce anxiety, but people who reported being distressed (困扰) about their dreams were even more likely to suffer from general anxiety than those who experienced an upsetting event such as the divorce of their parents.
It is possible, however, that something is going wrong in the brains of individuals who
experience a lot of anxiety, so that normal emotional processing during dreaming fails, says Tore
Nielsen, director of the Dream and Nightmare Laboratory at Sacred Heart Hospital in Montreal. But Nielsen’s most recent results, published in the Journal of Sleep Research last June, actually bear out the Australian findings. The Canadian team found that having nightmares did not make dreamers more relieved in waking life — just the opposite.
What is not clear from these studies is whether nightmares play a causal role in anxiety. Most
researchers agree that if the dreams give rise to constant anxiety and concern, it may be a good idea to talk to a mental health professional about it.
32. What does the underlined phrase “that ordeals” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Fears. B. Tensions. C. Hands. D. Nightmares.
33. What do we know about the Australian and Canadian studies?
A. The Canadian study assessed people’s brain damage.
B. The Canadian study confirms the Australian findings.
C. The Australian study found bad dreams cause anxiety.
D. The Australian study concludes nightmares eases tension.
34. What should you do if you experience constant anxiety according to the text?
A. Seek professional help. B. Talk to your close friends.
C. Engage in some sleep study. D. Admit your brains are wrong.
35. 英语试题 第6页(共10页)Where is this text most likely from?
A. A popular novel. B. A biology textbook.

residents also make their tours across the country. The survey also shows more people take after
to tourism and that they spend plenty of money on them. Facing this tendency, we can’t help explore some underlying factors which are accountable for it. First, Chinese people’s living standard had been greatly improved, which allows most of them to travel around.
