Good morning, every expert. Now I’m very happy to have a chance to stand here, talking about my teaching design. The topic of my presentation is Unit6 At Christmas (story time).And the whole teaching process is made up of seven parts: Analysis of the teaching material, analysis of the students, teaching aims and learning objectives, teaching focus and predicted teaching difficulties, teaching methods and teaching procedure. First, let me talk about the teaching material.
Part 1 The Analysis of the teaching material:
This lesson is taken from Yilin edition primary school English, the fifth grade Unit8, with the topic of Christmas. As we know, Christmas is a very important holiday in western countries, it just likes our Spring Festival.
In this part, it shows students how Mike’s families celebrate their Christmas. From the order of time, the text tells us the date, the symbols, the traditional food and the activities to let students know more about Christmas.
Part 2 The Analysis of the students
Although Christmas is a western holiday, most students have known it a lot and many of them are interested in. So this topic can greatly attract their interests. It can accelerate them to involved in this lesson.
But some of these Ss have poor foundation in English. They can not express their ideas if the teacher doesn’t give them some words and sentences patterns. And some of the students have little knowledge in Christmas.
Part3 Teaching aims and learning objectives
I will talk about it from knowledge aims, ability aims and emotion aims:
For the knowledge aims:
1. Ss will be able to use the following words and phrases about Christmas. Such as Christmas, presents, Father Christmas, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, turkey, pudding, buy, put etc.
2. Ss will be able to use the order adverbs: First, Next, Then and finally.
For the ability aims:
1. Ss will improve their listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities, especially reading ability. During this lesson, they will do jigsaw reading and careful reading.
2. Ss will be able to use the knowledge they learned to describe Christmas.
3. Ss will be able to retell the text according to the mind map.
For the Emotion and culture aims:
1. Ss will know the traditions about Christmas and find the differences between Christmas and Spring Festival.
2. I hope to develop Ss’ learning interest, overcome their shyness and Ss are willing to share their opinions with each other.
Part 4 Teaching focus
According to the teaching aims, the following aims are very important.
1. Ss will be able to use the following words and phrases about Christmas. Such as Christmas, presents, Father Christmas, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, turkey, pudding, buy, put, etc.
2. Ss will be able to use the order adverbs: First, Next, Then and finally.
3. Ss will be able to use different reading skills to understand the text.
Part 5 Predicted teaching difficulty
1. Students may have difficulties in using some specific words which are related to Christmas. Such as put, buy, Christmas, presents, turkey, etc.
2. Some of the students have little knowledge in Christmas which make it difficult for them to obtain the ability and emotion aims.
3. Some of the Ss have poor foundation in English, they may have difficulty in retelling the text.
Part 6 Teaching methods
As we all know: the main instructional aim of learning English is to cultivate students’ abilities of listening, speaking, reading, writing and their good sense of the English language. So in this lesson I’ll mainly use the Ss-oriented teaching method, communicative and discussion method, task-based method and activity-based method. To use all these methods are helpful to develop the students’ abilities and make them the real masters in class while the teacher only acting as a director, or an organizer.
Part 7 Teaching procedures
[Class activities]
Step1. Warm up
1. First, I’ll present some pictures about Christmas with Christmas songs. It can give Ss a relax atmosphere and create a real situation.
2. Show the title. Unit8 At Christmas.
2. Next, I’ll show the learning activities. It can tell Ss what we will learn in this lesson. It also present the order adverbs: First, Next, Then and finally, which is one of today’s teaching focus.
Step2. Lead-in
1. In this step, Ss will know something about Christmas and learn some words in the story time.[ Christmas Eve, Christmas Day.] Here I also give them the culture tip. Ss will get to know, Christmas is the most important holiday in western countries. Then Ss will find some symbols about Christmas. It is not difficult for them to circle, They will also learn some new words here.
Step3. Presentation
- Show Today’s main character Mike. Mike is reading a book, the kingdom of Father Christmas. Do you like to read it with Mike? In this video, Ss will get a general impression about Father Christmas and some Christmas traditions.
- After reading the book, Mike wants to write a book by himself. He has finished some parts. He draws some pictures and writes some sentences. But they are in a mess, I’ll encourage Ss to help Mike finish his story book.
- Ss will do Jigsaw reading in group of four. Each person has a piece of the story, they should first read the sentences in the note and then do the match in groups. Each group has some papers, they need to stick it in the right places like this.
- Listen to the tape and finish the contents according to the time. Here they’ll also learn the order adverbs.
- Then we come to the careful reading. It contains three steps. Ss are required to answer the question: What do they do before Christmas? With different ways. The first paragraph Ss need to read with their eyes. Use the verbs buy, go and put. The second one is Listen and fill, Ss are required to read with their ears. The last one is read, underline and act. Ss are required to read with their mouths. After these three steps Ss will get a better understanding of the text.
- Then they will read the text after the tape. Pay attention to the pronunciation and intonation. This story is to be continued. If they do well in the following part, they will continue reading.
Step4 Extension
- Ss will retell the text with the help of the pictures and the blackboard design. (This is the blackboard design)
- Then they will continue reading the book. Know more traditions about Christmas.
- Finally, they will make a plan for their Christmas. I’ll give them the examples. If time is limited here. This part will be moved to the Homework.
Step5 Homework
Draw a mind map about their Christmas and write it down.
