    Jessica Burks’ home is full of opportunities. Packaged slime(黏土) in a variety of colors and pleasant smells lines one wall of living room, and, in the designated “slime room” workspace in the back, bottles of fragrance oil are arranged in rows, next to glue and an industrial-size kitchen mixer.

    But it’s not the amount of slime in Burks’ house that shocks people, she said. It’s that her 15-year-old daughter, Samantha Zumwalt, is in charge of their enterprise. The mother-daughter team run Samantha’s Slime Shop at home and the demand for their products helps them earn six figures a year. Samantha’s slime, offered in a rainbow of colors and a range of textures(质地), is in high demand. Since she started her business, she’s made more than 24,000 sales on Etsy. The customers are generally young — between 9 and 12 years old, Burks said, though some adults and teens buy slime, too. Some customers buy Samantha’s slime because they say playing with it is calming. Others want it because it gives them something to do with their hands.

    Last year, Nichole Jacklyne, a social media blogger, who reviews slime and provides DIY lessons for hundreds of thousands of followers, reviewed Samantha’s product in a video. After Jacklyne’s video, orders poured into Samantha’s shop, Burks said.

    However, Samantha’s mom was initially resistant to the girl’s slime ambitions. It took months for Samantha to convince her mom to buy the key materials to make slime. “I told her no for months,” Burks said. Finally, Burks gave in. She had been laid off from her job as an accountant, and the two dove into the slime business. Now, Burks is proud of Samantha for running the business so well, “I hope she can meet all of her business goals — whether that’s still running the slime enterprise, or buying another business out, or starting a new business,” she said. “Whatever her dreams are… is where I want her to be.”

    Could it be time to say goodbye to Earth? According to NASA, a giant asteroid is heading for Earth next month. Well, when we say heading for Earth, we actually mean its heading for Earth’s vicinity(周边), passing within 3,908,791 miles of our planet.

    Officially classified as 52768 (1998 OR2), the near-miss has been predicted to occur on April 29. According to NASA, the asteroid is traveling toward us at 19,461 miles per hour and is about half the size of Mount Qomolangma.

    The space agency first discovered the object in 1998 and said it would be “large enough to cause global effects” if it were to hit Earth. But despite being classed as “potentially hazardous (有危险的)”, scientists said it is not on the list of potential future Earth impact events.

    Currently, the agency has identified 20,000 Near-Earth Objects. Of these, only a few are considered potential impactors, which NASA tracks via their automated Sentry System.

    The near-miss 1998 OR2 might not pose a threat, but many scientists agree it’s only a matter of time before a huge asteroid collides with Earth.

    Cardiff University scientist Ian McDonald told BBC Today, “Doomsday asteroid hits aren’t confined to the past. There are always rocks flying through space. One of these will hit us and it will have pretty dramatic effects.”

    The last Earth impact was in 2013, and terrifyingly nobody saw it coming. Dubbed(被称为)the Chelyabinsk meteor, it exploded just 30 kilometers from Earth’s surface, shattering windows and rocking buildings for over 500 square kilometers, according to the BBC.

    Our ability to collect data gets far ahead of our ability to fully use it, yet data may hold the key to solving some of the biggest global challenges facing us today.

    Take, for instance, the frequent outbreaks of waterborne diseases as a consequence of war or natural disasters. The most recent example can be found in the country, where roughly 10,000 new suspected cases of cholera(霍乱) are reported each week — and history is filled with similar stories. What if we could better understand the environmental factors that contributed to the disease, predict which communities are at higher risk, and put in place protective measures to stop the spread? Answers to this question and others like it could potentially help us prevent a catastrophe.

    As a big data scientist, I studied data from wide-ranging, public sources to identify patterns, hoping to predict trends that could be a threat to global security. Various data streams are important because the ground truth data (such as surveys) is often delayed, limited, incorrect or, sometimes, nonexistent.

    For example, knowing the incidence(发生率) of mosquito-borne disease in communities would help us predict the risk of mosquito-spread disease such as dengue, the leading cause of illness and death in the tropics. However, mosquito data at a global (and even national) level is not accessible.

    To address this gap, we’re using other sources such as satellite pictures, climate data and population information to forecast the risk of dengue. Specifically, we had success in predicting the spread of dengue in Brazil at the regional, state and city level using these data streams as well as clinical observation data and online searchers that used terms related to the disease. While our predictions aren’t perfect, they show promise.

    Similarly, to forecast the flu season, we have found that online searches can complement(补充) clinical data. Because the rate of people searching the internet for flu symptoms often increases during their beginning, we can predict a sharp increase in cases where clinical data delays. All of this shows the potential of big data. The information is there; now it’s time to use it.

    W: Mr. Smith, may I talk with you for a moment?

    M: Of course. Come in, please.

    W: I’ve come to talk to you about my grade on my last paper. I want to know why I was given an “F”.

    M: Well, yours was so similar to that of another student in the class, and I think that you’d not done it yourself.

    W: I did work closely with my roommate Jean, but let me explain why. A week before the paper was due, I was too sick to do my research. Jean agreed to help me. But it was really on my own.

    M: Well, you’d been given a month to work on the paper. Wouldn’t it be better to get ahead rather than to wait until the last minute? Each student was supposed to prepare it individually. I’m afraid my decision remains the same. However, if you’re willing to make an oral presentation about the government’s role in running the economy, I’ll give you extra credit.

    W: Thank you. I’ll do that. But when?

    M: My assistant Ms. White will inform you as soon as it is decided.

    W: OK. Goodbye!

    Text 9

    M: Good morning. This is Spa Heaven. How can I help you?

    W: Well, basically, I think I’m too tired and looking for some way to relax.

    M: OK, sure. Did you know that we recently have a special offer which allows non-members to use our facilities without having to pay the membership fee?

    W: Oh, that’s great.

    M: Yeah, but the offer is just until the end of this month. Anyway, let me tell you a little about the facilities at Spa Heaven. First, we have a fitness center where you can have a weight training so that you can lose some weight.

    W: And that sounds good, but I’m not really interested in getting fit. I just want to get rid of my tiredness. Mm, well, I’d like to go swimming and I find that helps me relax.

    M: We have two 25-meter pools here.

    W: Can you tell me how much that costs?

    M: Well, for non-members, it costs just $10 for each time.

    W: OK. I think I need to do something more relaxing, you know, like yoga. Do you have anything like that?

    M: Well, yes. And during the special offer period, non-members can take part for just $35 per class.

    W: OK. Thanks very much for your help. I’ll come down this afternoon and arrange a yoga class.

    M: Sure, I’m looking forward to seeing you then.

    W: A reader wrote in to say that she was feeling left out at break because her best friend wasn’t around. Here’s our advice to her, and to all kids who feel lonely sometimes.

    It’s hard when a best friend isn’t around, maybe because she moved to a different school or a different class. You may feel lonely at break or lunchtime. You want to have new friends. But how do you make them? Maybe it seems like everybody else already has their friends. But remember, there’s always room for more friends.

    Start by looking around your classroom — thinking about which kids you’d like to play with at break. Look for chances to say hi to them, smile and be friendly. Offer to share something with or express your appreciation to them, invite someone to play with you or say “Do you want to sit here?” at lunchtime. If you have trouble doing this or if you’re feeling shy, ask your teacher to help you make new friends. Teachers are usually pretty good at matching up friends. The best way to make friends is to be a friend. Be kind, be friendly, share, say nice things, offer to help, and pretty soon you’ll have one, or two, or even more new friends.
