In 2016, the news was full of stories about dangerous drinking water in Flint, Michigan. The water had too much lead (铅) in it. Gitanjali Rao, 11, could not stop thinking about how worrying it must be to have polluted water coming out of your water tap.
There were home test machines that could detect (发现) lead in water. But these tests didn’t work very well. They took too long and often gave wrong results. Gitanjali wondered if she could create a test that was quick, easy, and right.
One day, Gitanjali read a news story about using carbon nanotubes (碳纳米管) to test for harmful things in the air. She wondered if she could use the same idea to detect lead in water.
To test her idea, Gitanjali needed a safe lab with tools that could sense tiny amounts (数量) of lead. She wrote to many labs with her idea, and every time she heard the same thing: “We can’t let an 11-year-old kid in here.” Or they didn’t reply at all. Was her idea so bad? What was she doing wrong?
Finally, Gitanjali decided she was asking the wrong people. She emailed a chemistry teacher at her school. They didn’t have a big lab, but it was good enough for Gitanjalito test whether her detector could sense lead at all. She had been paying too much attention to the equipment (设备) at big labs. But maybe she didn’t need it just to show her basic idea worked.
After many, many tries—her detector worked. Then Gitanjali made a phone app so users could see the results at once on their phones. She entered her idea in a big national competition in 2017 and later was named “America’s Top Young Scientist.”

In 1982, when just 22 California condors(兀鹫) were left in the world, scientists caught the remaining population to breed the birds. Nearly forty years later, 1,000 California condor chicks had been born since the official rescue program began.
“We’ve put a lot of effort into this—a lot of dollars, a lot of years of research, and our final goal is a population that is able to continue by itself,” said Chris Parish, director of conservation(保护) at the Peregrine Fund, a partner in the program.
Researchers began studying the birds in the 1940s and even then, the population was small. By the 1980s, experts began the slow process of catching, breeding and reintroducing the birds back into the wild. The population has since grown to more than 500, with over half living in the wild. But the birds remain in danger of dying out, and they are now found mainly in California, Arizona, southern Utah and Baja California, Mexico.
Experts have found that the leading cause—by far—is lead poisoning(铅中毒). The birds often eat dead animals shot and left behind by hunters, and they sometimes eat lead ammunition (弹药) while picking at the meat.
It was the research that made the California government order that hunters shouldn’t use lead ammunition when shooting any wildlife anywhere in the state. Parish pointed to a pilot program in Northern Arizona, where nearly 9 in 10 hunters have either used non-lead ammunition or agreed to pull the remains of shot animals away. It’s programs like that, he said, that must be developed if the conservation community wants to continue the condor’s success story.
For Parish, the fight for the California condor is bigger than just the one species(物种). “It’s not the bird that’s worth it,” he said. “It’s successfully showing the problem and solutions and acting on those solutions. That’s what we’re going to need. We’re going to need to have confidence in society that we can do it again.” Because Parish, like most conservationists, knows that the California condor is far from the last species that will need to be saved.
1. Why are the 1,000 California condor chicks mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A.To show the success of the rescue program.
B.To explain the present situation of the condors.
C.To describe the final goal of the rescue program.
D.To introduce the yearly birth number of the condors.
2. What do we know about California condors?
A.They were birds unique to America.
B.They cannot survive in the wild at present.
C.They weren’t bred by people until the 1940s.
D.They can be found in three states of America.
3. What can we learn about the program in Northern Arizona?
A.It does not meet Parish’s expectations.
B.It is going to be carried out in California.
C.It is supported by the hunting community.
D.It stresses the use of non-lead ammunition.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.The future of species conservation.
B.Happy conservation stories of wildlife.
C.Protecting condors is our responsibility.
D.The California condor fought its way back.

The meaning of silence varies among cultural groups. Silences may be thoughtful, or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in a conversation may also show stubbornness, uneasiness, or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every gap(间隙) with conversation. Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person’s needs.
Many Native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of communicating among people, just as some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do. Therefore, when a person from one of these cultures is speaking and suddenly stops, what may be implied(暗示) is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these cultures, silence is a call for reflection.
Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with conflicts among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show agreement between parties about the topic under discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her. In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority.
Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the possible meanings of silence when they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing. Nurses should recognize their own personal and cultural construction of silence so that a patient’s silence is not interrupted too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing(治愈) value of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.
1. What may a silence in a conversation not show?
A. Anxiety. B. Uneasiness. C. Delight. D. Stubbornness.
2. Which of the following people might regard silence as a call for careful thought?

Waste sorting is a procedure that involves the separation of waste on purpose into different kinds as defined (规定) by the final use for the waste. That is to say, this separation of waste is usually aimed at different ends, including for recycling purposes, or even for producing power. As such, the waste sorting could fall into sorts like paper-based materials, plastic-based materials and organic materials. The process could also be started by hand. Indeed, some companies that manage waste have some sorts of waste sorting facilities in place for this aim.
An example of the type of waste sorting that could be observed at the individual level is the common type in cities where various waste bins are set out with clear indications of the type of waste that should be put into them. Some of the waste bins have pictures indicating that only paper should be put into the bins, some are meant for cigarette butts (烟蒂), others for plastics, and the rest could be for any other type of waste. Also, persons at home could begin the process of waste sorting by dividing the waste into various kinds before taking it out. Some companies and government organizations even offer incentive, such as offering some money to consumers in exchange for them bringing in used bottles and plastics.
Some companies have specifically created facilities that are only targeted toward the large-scale application of waste sorting for the purpose of separating the various collected waste into different kinds.
One of the purposes for the application of waste sorting could be for the sake of separating materials for recycling, such as plastics and paper. It could also be for the separation of the waste into the general categories of wet and dry waste. The process could also be for the purpose of sorting commercial waste. With the application, I’m sure it is becoming easier to separate waste.

An earthquake is one of the most common natural disasters. It may cause great damage. So it is wise to learn some simple safety tips to protect yourself or your family members.
Fragile items, like those made of glass should usually be placed on a lower surface, near the ground instead of being placed on the cupboards higher up. Never place them near your bed, sofas and other furniture where you would be sitting or lying down. When there is a strong movement, these pieces will fall on the floor directly and not on you.
There is a strong chance of short circuits(短路) and fire breakouts during an earthquake. Make sure you turn off electrical connections and gas immediately when an earthquake happens.
During an earthquake, lie beneath an object that is not easily damaged. Do not go near objects that could directly fall on you. Never use the elevator to go down. Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Research has shown that most injuries happen when people inside buildings try to go out. Use the staircases at all times.
If you are outdoors, do not take shelter under a tree, streetlights, electric poles or tall buildings. If you are driving, stop your car and stay in a safe place. Do not park your car under a tree or any tall object.

Always wanted to live abroad? Now may be your best chance. More countries are inviting travelers to trade their home offices for the opportunity to live and work abroad during the pandemic(疫情).
Stanford University economist Nicholas Bloom estimates 42% of the US labor force is now working from home full time. And workers may not be returning to the office anytime soon.
As the pandemic marches on and companies like Facebook announce employees needn’t return to the office until mid-2021 (or never in the case of Twitter), some countries are shifting away from traditional tourism models that rely on a stream of short-term visitors in favor of travelers who are willing to stay for longer periods.
These destinations are attracting this new batch of “digital nomads”(数字游民) with low Covid-19 rates, decreased costs of living and a slower, more relaxed pace of life.
Starting Aug 21, remote workers can apply to live and work on the 35-square-mile island of Anguilla, a British overseas territory(领地) that has reported only three Covid-19 cases to date. Priority(优先) to enter Anguilla is being given to applicants from “low-risk” countries, defined as those with less than 0.2% infection rate, as well as long-stay travelers. A stay under three months costs $1,000 for individuals and $1,500 for a family of four. Entrance fees, which double for longer stays, cover two Covid-19 tests, a digital work permit and other costs. Unlike other destinations, Anguilla asks only for a “brief description” of the type of work one will do while there.
Travelers who apply for new year-long work visas to Barbados know within five working days whether their visa request is confirmed. There is free Wi-Fi throughout the island, including restaurants, cafes, public libraries and public parks. Visa holders can send their children to private schools or pay a small stipend to attend a state-owned public school.
Bermuda is appealing to those working at cramped home offices by touting its pink beaches, crystal waters and 18 miles of walking paths.
1. If Katharine, as well as her husband and two children, plans to stay in Anguilla for about a year, how much does she have to pay for the entrance fees?
A. $1,500 B. $1,000 C. $3,000 D. more than $3,500
2. What do Anguilla, Barbados, and Bermuda have in common?
A. They are all destinations with less than 0.2% infection rate, and attractive to long-stay travelers.
B. Visa holders can send their children to private schools.
C. They all rely on a stream of short-term visitors rather than travelers who are willing to stay for longer periods.
D. They all can attract tourists for their low Covid-19 infection rates, decreased costs of living and a slower, more relaxed pace of life.
3. What’s the author’s main purpose in writing Paragraph 3?
A. To tell us something about the pandemic.
B. To prove the pandemic marches on.
C. To show the popularity of these new destinations.
D. To introduce the subject of the reading passage.

You don’t need to travel far away to write a travel diary. Your writing can start with a family vacation or a weekend getaway. All you need is a destination or a place of departure(出发)!
1 Your trip journal can begin before your trip has started. Use your journal to start planning the things you want to do. It can be a cool restaurant where you want to eat, a hike you want to go on or different sights you want to see.
Write about what you imagine it will be. Sometimes when you travel, your destination is wildly different from what you expected. Maybe you expected the local food to be bad but it turned out to be delicious. 2 Maybe you thought you would not be comfortable with the climate while you adapted to it. Whatever, try to write it down before you arrive. It will be interesting to compare these predictions to what you have actually experienced.
3 It is always easier to remember things when they are fresh in your brain, but it may be diluted(淡化) with time going by. So try to write as much as you can during traveling every day if you can. Your journals don’t have to be long, but letting them express your feelings is the most important or exciting.
Add pictures to your journal. 4 Combining pictures with your firsthand accounts of what they represent, or what happened when they were taken, will make for(有助于) a better travel journal.
Write about your trip after you leave. It is important to reflect on your travels, so you can have a new understanding. 5

Richard Hosford fulfilled an ambition of founding a music festival in his home county in 1991. Richard said, “At that time, my aim was to create a festival with an informal atmosphere and the highest possible artistic standards.”
The festival was first planned in Canon Ray Nichols. The Gaudier Ensemble (乐团), of which Richard is a member, has returned each year to perform a wide range of chamber music (室内乐) at the festival. Richard said, “Over many years we have built a special relationship with our audience. Teaching and encouraging a love of music are important elements of the festival, which has always included a concert for children, and now runs classes for promising young local musicians. Arriving from across Europe, the members of the Ensemble stay with hosts in the village and enjoy making music with old friends in the wonderful St. Mary’s Church.”
The event is now an established favorite on the South West music festival scene and this year will mark its 25th year with a programme that includes pieces by Mozart, Francaix, Schubert and Bruch from Dec 9 to Dec 12. There will also be a late-night concert of light American gems by Gershwin, a family concert and a new commission by poet and broadcaster James Crowden and Lillie Harris from the Royal College of Music. Long ago, Mexican wolves were common all through the Southwestern US and Northern Mexico. But as more ranchers (农场主) spread across the area, the wolves were hunted until they were almost wiped out. The Mexican wolf is the rarest kind of gray wolf in North America.
In the 1970s, the US government began a program of raising Mexican wolves, and releasing them back into nature. The goal of the program was to help the wolves spread back across the area through which they had once wandered. The first wolves were released in 1998, and the program has continued since then with mixed success.
The results of the latest count of Mexican wolves were recently announced by the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). A total of 42 wolf packs were found in the wild, and half of them had pups (幼崽) last spring. Around 90 pups were born in all, and 58% of the pups survived. The count reported a total of 163 wolves, which is nearly 25% more than last year.
One change wildlife managers have made recently is placing pups into groups of wild wolves while they are young. The wolves that are returned to nature when they are young seem to be far more successful than those returned for the first time as adults. Mixing in new wolves from outside the packs also improves the overall long-term health for the wolves as a group.
For ranchers, who must protect their cows from the wolves, the increase is likely to mean more lost animals. Last year, 184 farm animals were killed in all. That’ s the largest number since 1998. One New Mexico rancher, Audrey McQueen, says the cattle(牛) she loses to wolves cost her about $50,000 a year.
The USFWS and others are studying the increase in cattle killings, and trying to figure out a way to protect both the Mexican wolves and the ranchers. Amy Lueders, who works for the USFWS, says, “Ensuring that wolves and people can coexist is an important part of long-term success.”
1. Why did the US government start the program?
A. Because the Mexican wolf is one of the rarest wolves in North America.
B. Because ranchers wanted to protect their cows from the wolves.
C. Because the Mexican wolf was almost wiped out as a result of being hunted.
D. Because the pups of the Mexican wolf can survive in nature.
2. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Few Mexican wolves lived in North America before the program.
B. A total of 42 wolf pups were found in the wild.
C. The adult wolves returned to nature more successfully than the pups.
D. 184 farm animals were killed in all in 1998.
3. What will be talked about in the following passage?
A. How to protect the farm animals.
B. How to ensure the coexistence of wolves and people.
C. How to raise more Mexican wolves.
D. How to help more adult wolves survive in nature.

The evolution of Halloween
From trick-or-treating to pumpkin carving, everybody has their favourite “terrible” season activity; however, how many of us have taken a moment to think about where these traditions come from?
The answers lie in Halloween’s ambiguous past, with many of our modern routines dating back thousands of years. In order to learn more about our most mysterious and frightening festival, the experts at Quizlet have analyzed hundreds of user-made study sets to uncover how our much-loved Halloween traditions came into being.
Halloween’s history finds its origins in the Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated around 2,000 years ago. This often involved costumes (服装) of a kind, with celebrants putting on robes (长袍) made of animals’ heads and skins. The day marked the end of the autumn harvest and the beginning of winter and the last day before the new year for Celts. They believed that this was when the border between worlds of the living and the dead was at its weakest, which is part of the reason why we associate Halloween with all things spooky today.
Interestingly, when people believed that Halloween was a time when the border between worlds was at its thinnest, they naturally feared meeting ghosts. To avoid being recognized by any wandering spirits, people would wear masks to hide their identity, or so that they might be mistaken for other ghosts.
You may have heard Halloween referred to by the more frightening sounding name, All Hallows’ Eve. This is because the festival of Samhain took place the day before the Christian celebration of All Saints Day, on 1st November, also known as All Hallows Eve.
The name of the pagan(非基督教徒) festival was adapted to reflect the popularity of Christianity, but it retained its reputation for the scary and supernatural.
1.Which of the following statements is true?
A. Halloween’s past is clearly known by human beings.
B. Halloween’s history can date back to 2,000 years ago.
C. The experts research the Halloween’s tradition based on hundreds of user- made study sets.
D. Many of our modern routines can not date back to thousands of years ago.
2. What is the meaning of the underlined word “spooky”?
A. frightening B. ridiculous C. interesting D. fantastic
3. What would people do in order to avoid being recognized by any wandering spirits?
A. Putting on robes made of animals’ heads and skins.
B. Wearing mask to hide their identity.
C. Hiding themselves in some lonely place.
D. Keeping staying at home.
4. For what did Halloween maintain its reputation?
A. Its history. B. Its origin.

When my friend asked me: “What makes your love last?” I ran through all the obvious reasons: shared interests, unselfishness, communication. Yet there is more.
We still have fun. Last Saturday at the store, we split the list and raced each other to see who could make it to the checkout first. Even washing dishes can be great fun. We enjoy simply being together. One time I came home to find a note on the front door that led me to another note, then another. I opened the door to find Scott holding my cooking kettle and a gift package. Sometimes I leave him notes on the mirror and little presents under his pillow.
There is understanding. I understand why he must play basketball with the guys. And he understands why, once a year, I must get away from home to meet my sisters for a few days of nonstop talking and laughing.
There is sharing. Not only do we share worries and parental burdens, we also share ideas. Once, Scott came home from a meeting and presented me with a thick historical novel. Though he prefers thrillers and science fiction, he had read the novel on the plane, just because he wanted to be able to exchange ideas about the book with me.
There is forgiveness. When I’m embarrassingly loud and crazy at parties, Scott forgives me. When he confessed that he had lost some of our savings in the stock market, I gave him a hug and said, “It’s okay. It’s only money.”
There is sensitivity. Last week he walked through the door with the look that told me it had been a tough day. I asked him what had happened. He told me about a 60-year-old woman who’d had a stroke (中风). He wept as he recalled the woman’s husband touching her hand. How was he going to tell this husband of 40 years that his wife would probably never recover?
I guess our love lasts because it is comfortable. We have experienced too much that has contributed to our growth, and created our memories.

Focusing on tasks is hard enough. Who can put in a straight hour of concentration when our favorite websites, apps, and other sources of instant pleasure are calling? 1 Exercise and maintenance (维护) can train our concentration to be more productive. Here are some natural ways to increase mental focus.
● Disconnect from your devices. Taking time away from your devices — and technology in general — is a great way to increase focus. 2 Without the added chatter provided by social media and the comparisons and anxieties that come with it, you’ll have more time and a greater desire to focus on the tasks in front of you, whatever they are.
● Tidy your spaces. The space around you impacts your well-being. Bright, open spaces connect us to natural light and improve our moods. Messy spaces are distracting, overwhelming, and destroy our focus. 3 Therefore it allows your brain to flourish.
● Create a schedule. Schedules are hateful to some because they’re associated with a forced sense of busyness. 4 By creating a schedule — and sticking to it — you’re training your brain to expect periods of focused work with a scheduled reward at the end.
● 5 A good workout can really be the thing that changes everything for you. I am much happier and lighter after a quick workout, because the endorphins (内啡肽) create a healthy, natural high. If you want a great way to zone in on your mental focus that is quick and easy, you can begin putting a quick jog or a few sets of sprints into your day.
A. Exercise to focus.
B. Eat for performance.
C. However, your ability to focus is like a muscle.
D. But there are some real advantages to using a schedule.
E. The methods that work best also depend on your body and brain.
F. Keeping your general environment free of mess removes your focus difficulty.
G. Leaving your technology behind after work helps you feel energetic the next day.

Face masks may help to reduce coronavirus transmission (冠状病毒传播), but as more and more people start to wear them, a new problem arises—increasing reports of dry eyes.
Scientists call this condition MADE (mask-associated dry eye), according to Professor Lyndon Jones from the School of Optometry & Vision Science at the University of Waterloo.
Our eyes become dry when there’s an imbalance in our tear film (泪膜)—the liquid layer that coats the eye’s surface. Wearing a mask can affect the tear film balance, due to the reduction of air spread outwards from the mouth and nose, according to Professor Jones. He explained: “Face masks significantly reduce the spread of air outwards from the mouth and nose. However, breathed air still needs to spread; when a mask sits loosely against the face the likely route is upwards. This forces a stream of air over the surface of the eye, creating conditions that speed up the evaporation (蒸发) of the tear film, like a steady breeze blowing over damp skin. When masks are worn for extended periods, this repeated evaporation may lead to dry spots on the surface of eyes. ”
Worryingly, having dry eyes may encourage you to touch your eyes, which could increase your risk of COVID-19. Professor Jones added: “Coronavirus transmission is possible via the mouth and nose, and, to a lesser extent, potentially the eyes. Bringing unwashed hands near the face may increase the likelihood of infection (感染). That is an additional reason to deal with MADE.”
Thankfully, there are several things you can do to relieve your dry eyes.
Professor Jones concluded: "Is wearing a mask worth it, when you may have to possibly deal with MADE? Absolutely! Masks are here for the foreseeable future. Along with social distancing and hygiene measures, they represent a very important part of our defence against the spread of COVID-19."
1. What do we know about MADE?
A. It can prevent coronavirus transmission.
B. It results in you being infected with COVID-19.
C. It comes with many wearing face masks.
D. It makes us wear face masks against COVID-19.
2. Why do our eyes become dry?
A. Face masks are worn in a wrong way.
B. The air spread is reduced in a way.
C. Evaporation of the tear film is stopped.
D. The tear film loses its balance.
3. What’s Professor Jones’ attitude toward wearing a mask?
A. Ignorant. B. Supportive. C. Anxious. D. Passive.
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Why face masks can make your eyes dry

Helicopter parenting is an expression that describes parents who are over focused on their child, like a helicopter hovering closely over him, whether he needs them or not.
1 As family sizes are getting smaller, more attention is focused on the one or two children and some parents have responded by taking more control over their lives. Also, many parents are making an attempt to develop close bonds with their children, often being overly involved in their lives. Also, some parents always fear that their children may fail in what they want to achieve, so they try to prevent the serious consequence, especially if it seems it could be avoided with parental involvement.
Sometimes the practice continues to spread due to what is called “peer (同龄人) pressure”. When parents observe other parents overparenting, it will pressure them to do the same to make sure that their own children don’t fall behind.
2 For example, by always “doing” for the child, the hovering parents don’t give the child a chance to fully develop his sense of independence. As a result, the child may lack the confidence necessary to do well in school. As an adult, he might find it difficult to deal with life’s challenges. 3 Research has shown that helicopter parents have more anxiety because they constantly judge their own value by their children’s success.
4 Experts suggest that you should let your child do tasks that he is physically and mentally capable of doing by himself, which will help to build a self-confident kid. 5 9Gradually, your child will learn independence as he steps out on his own. Meanwhile, valuable lessons can occur when making mistakes. So, if your child is allowed to make mistakes, he’s given the opportunity to learn from those lessons.
A. This parenting style also affects the parents.
B. So how can you avoid being a helicopter parent?
C. There are a number of reasons for helicopter parenting.
D. There may be various consequences of helicopter parenting.
E. The term “helicopter parents” has been widely used in the media.
F. It is also important to let your child struggle while trying new activities.
G. Some parents are just protecting their investment or acting like any other consumers.

Emergency dispatchers(调度员) often receive calls that aren’t, well, emergencies.
But something felt off to dispatcher Tim Teneyck of Oregon, Ohio, when a woman called to order a pizza on November 13. He told her she had the wrong number, only to quickly realize this had been no mistake on her part.
In a recording of the call, we can hear them both on the line. “You called 911 to order a pizza?” Tim asked. “This is the wrong number to call for a pizza.” “No, no, no...you’re not understanding,” the woman said.
When the woman replied with her apartment information, everything became clear. She didn’t want a pizza at all; she needed help. But she couldn’t tell him that directly because she wasn’t in a safe place.
While Tim has never received a call like hers in his 14 years of service, he understood her message. After a few more questions, he said, “I’m getting you now.”
As it turned out, the woman was in an apartment with a man who was physically hurting her mother. She knew he would run away if he discovered she was calling 911, so she pretended to order a pizza instead. When Tim sent officers her way, he had them turn off their sirens(警报器) before they arrived.
The officers arrested(逮捕) 56-year-old Simon Lopez, who was charged with domestic violence(被控家暴).
Oregon Police Chief Michael Navarre said they couldn’t have rescued this woman without Tim’s help. He added that it was important for people in danger to “somehow or another express to the police dispatcher that they are in trouble, and this woman did that. She did that not with her words, but with the tone(语气) of her voice.” “Other dispatchers...told me they wouldn’t have picked up on this,” Tim said.
Of course, the other hero is this clever woman who saved her mom by keeping a cool head. It couldn’t have been easy in such a stressful situation, which just makes her braver!

A. She tried to help Tim. B. She was quite hungry.

B. “Yes, he is hurting my mother.”
C. “No, I need your help now.”
D. “Yes, I need a large pizza.”
3. Which of the following can best describe Tim?

Thirteen-year-old Kaylee has a lot of friends—532, actually, if you count up her online friends. And she spends a lot of time with them.
But is it possible that Kaylee’s online friendships could be making her lonely? That’s what some experts believe. Connecting online is a great way to stay in touch, they say. However, some experts worry that many kids are so busy connecting online that they might be missing out on true friendships.
Could this be true? During your parents’ childhoods, connecting with friends usually meant spending time with them in the flesh. Kids played Scrabble around a table, not Words With Friends on their phones. When friends missed each other, they picked up the telephone. Friends might even write letters to each other.
Today, most communication takes place online. A typical teen sends 2,000 texts a month and spends more than 44 hours per week in front of a screen. Much of this time is spent on social media platforms (平台).
In fact, in many ways, online communication can make friendships stronger, “There’s definitely a positive influence. Kids can stay in constant contact, which means they can share more of their feelings with each other,” says Katie Davis, co-author of The App Generation.
Other experts, however, warn that too much online communication can get in the way of forming deep friendships. “If we are constantly checking in with our virtual words, we will have little time for our real-world friendships.” says Larry Rosen, a professor at California State University. Rosen also worries that today’s kids might mistake the "friends" on the social media for true friends in life. However, in tough times, you don’t need someone to like your picture or share your blogs. You need someone who will keep your secrets and hold your hand. You would like to talk face to face.

Fairy tales are an essential part of the child's personal development. Psychologists(心理学家) prove that fairy tales help children comprehend the reality. Fairy tales and parables(寓言故事) give us an opportunity to explain the child what is good and what is bad. They're full of positive and negative characters, which do either good or bad deeds. To put it differently, fairy tale is the reflection of real life, communications and relationships between people. I remember my childhood with a pleasant feeling in my heart. I loved listening to fairy tales. When I listened to them, I imagined the characters, their feelings and emotions. My mom wanted to develop my imagination skills.
From time to time, it's worthwhile to read parables together with kids. This activity can teach children to be kind-hearted and to obey laws in the future and foster(培养) the best moral values in them.
Faith in something good has always been the best source of power, motivation(动机) and patience. People cannot live happily without looking for a miracle(奇迹). I think that Santa Claus is the biggest miracle for every child on this planet. I know that the world of those children who believe in Santa Claus is full of joy, happiness and beauty. Let them enjoy this fairy tale while they're small. A bit later, the world will fill their hearts with realism and skepticism(怀疑态度).
Tell them that one day Santa will come and put a special gift under the Christmas tree or make their dreams come true. They just have to write a letter to Santa and ask him about something they want to get as a present. Many parents prefer to intimidate their children saying that Santa Claus won't come, if they behave badly during the year. I believe that using fears isn't the best idea to improve your child's behavior.
1. Which does the underlined word “intimidate” in the last paragraph mean?
A. frighten B. promise C. improve D. ask

C. Reading parables together with kids doesn’t deserve a parent’s efforts.
D. Fairy tales help children understand the reality.
3. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Fairy tales and parables.
B. Two Things That Help Us Bring Up Well-Rounded and Happy Kids.
C. Believe in Santa Claus.
D. Parables help children foster the best moral values.

When you love someone who has memory problems, you have to live in the moment. Jason van Genderen is a film maker from Australia who understands this all too well. His mom Hendrika is 87 years old and has both Alheimer’s disease and vascular dementia.
While caring for Hendrika can be challenging, Jason has found ways to make every day count. For example, Hendrika missed going shopping so much that Jason created an at-home version(版本) of her favorite supermarket. Next, he came up with a wonderful way to help her celebrate Mother’s Day, and the results were breathtaking! Inspired by some of his favorite childhood experiences, Jason decided to change their home into an aquarium (水族馆), much like the one he used to visit with his parents. With the help of his wife and kids, he hung special paper inside some large windows in their house and used two projectors to play a video of fish gently swimming in the water.
When everything was ready that evening, he brought Hendrika outside and made sure she was comfortable. Then he started the show, and Hendrika cried in surprise. “Jason, I’ve never seen anything like this,” she smiled as she watched the fish swimming in their new aquarium. “It’s very beautiful!” She couldn’t take her eyes off the beautiful sight as Jason reminded her of all the times when their family spent the entire day at the Sydney Aquarium.
While Hendrika couldn’t remember the “bit of magic” her son made her the next day, Jason said it was all worthwhile just to see her smile! Besides, they recorded the sweet moment, so she can relive it as often as she wants to! Jason really went above and beyond to make his mother feel special! What a moving surprise!

Baby Shark, a children’s rhyme recorded by South Korean company Pinkfong, has become the most-watched video ever on YouTube.
Played back-to-back, that would mean Baby Shark has been played continuously for 30,187 years. Pinkfong has made about $5.2m from YouTube streams alone. It took four years for Baby Shark to move up to the top of YouTube’s most-played chart, but the song is actually much older than that.
It is thought to have originated in US summer camps in the 1970s. One theory says it was invented in 1975, as Steven Spielberg’s Jaws became an box office smash around the world. There are a huge number of variations, including one version where a surfer loses an arm to the shark, and another where the protagonist(主角)dies.
But none of them could match the success of Pinkfong’s interpretation(演绎), which was sung by 10-year-old Korean-American singer Hope Segoine and uploaded to YouTube in 2015.
The song attracts children, whose appetite for repetition has undoubtedly helped it climb the ranks of YouTube’s most-watched videos." Nursery rhymes have always been sort of slow, very cute, but something that would help your children fall asleep - as opposed to Baby Shark,” Pinkfong’s marketing director Jamie Oh told the BBC in 2018. “Pinkfong’s Baby Shark is very trendy and it has a very bright beat with fun dance moves. The animation (动画) is very vivid. We call it K-Pop for the next generation.”
The company is turning the song into a movie and a musical, and wants to make Baby Shark “another classic for kids music, like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” Oh added.
1. What does the passage mainly talk about?

D. Baby Shark’s different versions.
2. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

C. Pinkfong has earned about $5.2m from Baby Shark the children’s rhyme in all.
D. Baby Shark, a children’s rhyme, was invented by South Korean company Pinkfong.

About 380 whales have died in what is suspected to be Australia’s largest stranding on record, officials say. Since Monday September21, 2020, hundreds of long-finned pilot whales have been found beached on Tasmania’s west coast. Rescuers had managed to save 50 by late on Wednesday, and they were trying to help the remaining estimated 30 whales.
Tasmanian government officials said the rescue effort would continue as long as there are live animals. The whales largely washed up on sand spits in the waters around an area called Macquarie Heads. Rescuers said they had helped 50 whales back into the sea, which they thought a “success”. Rescue efforts had been prevented by a strong tide which had brought some whales that had been saved back to shore again, they added. Whale experts said the surviving animals would be exhausted and weak. Pilot whales can grow up to 7m long and weigh up to three tonnes. Without the buoyancy (n.浮力) of the water, the whales would also be slowly crushed (压垮) by the weight of their bodies, said Prof Peter Harrison from Southern Cross University’s Whale Research Group.
Scientists say the reason is often unknown but they have a range of theories, including whales being lured (引诱) by fish to shore and losing their way. Highly social mammals, pilot whales in particular are known for stranding in groups because they travel in large, close-knit communities (关系紧密的群体) which rely on constant communication. Researchers say it’s possible that one leading individual could have mistakenly led the whole group to shore.
Pilot whales are not considered endangered, although exact population numbers are not known. Scientists believe there are about one million long-finned and 200,000 short-finned pilot whales worldwide.
1. What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A. People’s efforts to try to rescue the whales.
B. The difficulties to rescue the whales.

D. The rescue work is a great success.
2. What can we learn from the text?
A. Scientists have already known the exact reason for the whales’ stranding.

C. Rescuers had no difficulty in bringing some whales back to the sea.
D. Pilot whales particularly like stranding in groups because they travel in large, close-knit communities.

A.The Chinese. B.The French.

Add pictures to your journal. 4 Combining pictures with your firsthand accounts of what they represent, or what happened when they were taken, will make for(有助于) a better travel journal.

The festival will also welcome a group of recent Royal College of Music students who will perform alongside the Gaudier Ensemble at some concerts and work with talented local musical youngsters.

二、阅读理解(共4小题)

C. How you can wear face masks correctly
D. Why face masks can protect your eyes

1. What is the function of paragraph 1?

A. frighten B. promise C. improve D. ask
2. What can we learn from the reading passage?
A. Fairy tales are always full of positive characters.
B. Using fears is the best way to improve a child’s behaviour.

2. What can we learn from the text?
A. Scientists have already known the exact reason for the whales’ stranding.
B. Researchers guessed that it is more likely for one leading pilot whale to lead the whole group to shore mistakenly.
C. Rescuers had no difficulty in bringing some whales back to the sea.
D. Pilot whales particularly like stranding in groups because they travel in large, close-knit communities.
3. Where does the text most probably come from?
A. Newspaper. B. Textbook. C. Travel guide. D. Science fiction.
