Authentic Adirndacks; The Hedges
Fr recent years imprvements have been made—including upgrading the plumbing t accmmdate mre guests, answering t the main cmplaints in the past abut its pr capacity. The current wners have restred the camp t its riginal Adirndack-style glry. Thugh tasteless t the yunger age grup, the style earned the ldge a spt n the Natinal Register f Histric Places.
Great Lake Ldge; The Inn at Watervale
Built as a barding schl in 1892, this ldge became a summer retreat in 1917. Tday, the wner f the ldge prudly prmtes the resrt's lack f TV, Wi-Fi, and decent cell phne cverage, which makes it perfect fr recluses (隐士). Overcming extreme cld, cruel ice and peple dismissing him as mad, Slvenian Dav Kamicar became the first persn t ski nn-stp dwn Munt Everest.
After a dramatic fall ver almst sheer cliffs f snw, stnes and ice, 38-year-ldKamicar emerged in his base camp after five hurs f skiing. “I feel nly abslute happiness and abslute tiredness,”he said.
At ne stage he had t speed ver stretches f ice that cllapsed and brke underneath him and culd have sent him falling int the deep crevasses (裂缝) that dt the muntain.
The descent (下落) had been seen by many as insanely dangerus. The Darwin Awards website, which dcuments deaths which are flhardy, urged peple t lg n t Internet bradcasts f the attempt. “Keep yur eyes peeled fr a live Darwin Award," it said.
Hwever, the nly bdy t make the news was the crpse (尸体) f an unknwn muntaineer which Kamicar zipped past as he descended, ne f an estimated 120 crpses, thught t litter the slpes.
“This muntain is always full f surprises. Seeing a dead man ut there was a really shcking experience," he said.
Thanks t strategically placed cameras n the muntain and ne attached t his safety helmet, hundreds f thusands f peple witnessed his descent n the Internet, which was ne f the recrd highs ever. During the run mre than 650,000 hits were registered n his expeditin website jamming it fr a time as thers tried t access the site.
Weather cnditins were s severe that Kamicar had t abandn plans t rest n the summit befre attempting t descend. Instead, suffering frm fatigue, as sn as he reached the tp he put n his skis and flung himself back dwn the muntain.
Dealing with the muntain had already cst Kamicar tw fingers when a previus failed attempt saw him get frstbite as a fierce strm lashed the peak.
Kamicar cmes frm a skiing family and tk part in his first Himalayan skiing expeditin in 1989. Since then, he has been tireless in raising funds and spnsrship fr mre expeditins, with Everest as the permanent gal.

When it cmes t sea rescue, speed is everything. Accrding t Science Daily, the best chance t find smene alive after a ship r airplane accident at sea is during the first six hurs. The prbability reduces sharply after that. Hwever, the tides and changing weather at sea – especially the unpredictable currents (洋流) – make it hard fr rescuers t lcate peple in time, resulting in hundreds f deaths every year.
Nw, scientists frm the Swiss Federal Institute f Technlgy (ETHRW) and the Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy (MIT) have cme up with an algrithm (算法) that can quickly predict the lcatins t which peple flating in the cean will drift (漂流), speeding up search and rescue peratins at sea.
Currently, the mst cmmnly used algrithm in cean rescue is the “Lagrangian (拉格朗日算法)” apprach. But accrding t Thmas Peacck, a mechanical engineering prfessr at MIT, this apprach is nt precise enugh and significant errrs can accumulate (累积) in the prcess, leading the search team farther away frm the crrect lcatin.
The new algrithm, instead, uses the “Eulerian (欧拉算法)” apprach. The researchers believe that there are “hidden traps” in the cean – regins where currents temprarily cnverge and pull peple in, and t predict when and where these traps will frm is the key t rescue peratins. And this is exactly what the Eulerian apprach des: It interprets (诠释) the cean’s cmplex flws using mre advanced mdeling systems, allwing it t update its data quickly accrding t the ever-changing cean cnditins.
“We can think f these ‘traps’ as mving magnets (磁铁), attracting a set f cins thrwn n a table. The Lagrangian trajectries (轨迹) f cins are very uncertain, yet the strngest Eulerian magnets predict the cin psitins ver shrt times,” Mattia Serra, frmer PhD student at ETHRW, tld MIT News.
T test hw effective the new apprach is, the team did an experiment by setting manikins (人体模型) at sea frm different lcatins and using the algrithm t predict their drifting paths while mnitring their real-time whereabuts (下落) with GPS. The algrithm successfully identified all the hidden traps where the manikins eventually ended up in.
The researchers are planning t share the new algrithm with sea rescue teams t save mre peple lst at sea. “If there’s an accident in the last hur, rescuers can immediately lk and see where the sea traps are,” Peacck tld MIT News. “That’s imprtant when there’s a limited time windw in which they have t respnd.”
Hw will the new rescue algrithm help peple lst at sea?
A. By quickly predicting their crrect lcatin.
B. By changing the tides and weather at sea fr a while.
C. By using magnets in the searching prcess.
D. By prviding sea rescuers with varius slutins.
9. What des the underlined wrd “cnverge” in Paragraph 4 prbably mean?
A. Jin.B. Separate.C. Change.D. Stp.
10. What d we knw abut the Eulerian apprach?
A. It’s the mst ppular algrithm used in cean rescue.
B. It has ften led rescuers in the wrng directin.
C. It is the first t intrduce the idea f “hidden traps”.
D. It keeps cllecting infrmatin abut cean cnditins.
11. What attitude des Peacck have tward the new apprach?
A. Wrried.B. Cnfident. C. Dubtful. D. Curius.

It's nt an urban legend: crime rates d in fact rise in the summer in the U.S. A study fund that, with the exceptin f rbbery and aut theft, rates f all vilent and prperty crimes are higher during the summer than during ther mnths. The study examined data cllected during 8 years, which included vilent and prperty crimes that did nt result in death, bth reprted and nt reprted t the plice.
The data shw that, thugh the natinal crime rate drpped by 70 percent during recent years, seasnal spikes in summer remain. In sme cases thse spikes are 12 percent higher than rates during seasns in which the lws ccur. The phenmenn cnfuses many criminlgist and they wnder why.
Sme reasn that increased temperatures, which drive many ut f drs and leave windws pen in their hmes, raise the amunt f time when hmes are left empty. Others pint t the effect f students n summer vacatin wh are therwise ccupied with schling during ther seasns, while sme argue that suffering heat-induced discmfrt simply makes peple mre aggressive and likely t act ut.
Althugh these elements pssess certain persuasive pwer, their ratinality is called int questin when cases in winter are put n the map. Why aren't the rates in winter falling if heat related factrs are t blame fr the summer spike? Cntrarily, the matter shuld be viewed frm scial and ecnmic angles rather than n slar terms.
Numerus studies have shwn that rates f criminal behavir amng yung adults drp when their cmmunities prvide them with ther ways t spend their time and earn mney. This was fund t be true in Ls Angles, where gang activity was reduced when cmmunity centers fr teens were thriving and active. And generally speaking, the cnnectin between ecnmic inequality and crime is rbustly dcumented fr the U.S. And why summer sees a wrse situatin? It's prbably because it's even harder fr yungsters t land jbs that prvide fr life necessities.
S if fficials want t address the summer spike in crime, they may act differently instead f aiming straight at crimes. Simply upgrading security and severely punishing ffenses almst prduce vid effects. Instead, be pen t varius ptins and they will find that develpment f jb hunting agencies r cmmunity prfessinal training centers are accmpanying the drp f crime rate withut seasnal exceptins. After all, bread always cmes first fr everyne.
12. What puzzles schlars studying crimes?
A. The rates f rbbery and aut theft are lwer than ther vilent and pr crimes in summer.
B. The rates f crimes resulting in death are abut the same in all seasns.
C. The crime rates nt reprted t the plice are much higher during summer
D. Crime rates in summer are higher than thse f ther seasns.
13. Accrding t the authr, what is the key reasn fr the seasnal spike f crime rates?
A. Increased temperature left huses easier fr attacks.
B. The ht envirnment makes peple mre likely t be angered.
C. Yungsters find it hard t release energies at schl.
D. Peple's ecnmic needs are nt satisfied by the sciety.
14. What can be dne t fight seasnal rise f crimes?
A. Lengthen the schl time t hld students in schl during summer.
B. Enhance the safety mechanism during the summer
C. Take measures t encurage yuth emplyment.
D. Frighten wuld-be criminals thrugh harsh punishments.
15. Which f the fllwing statements is TRUE accrding t the passage?
A. Slar terms are respnsible fr the summer crime spike.
B. Crime rates in summer fall by 58 percent in the U.S.
C. LA criminal activities fall because f psitive cmmunity prgrams.
D. The crime rates in winter are lw due t lw mbility in the seasn.
