I’m abut t begin my fifth seasn f tree planting. Each year, arund this time, I have mixed feelings abut the jb. Never have I lved a jb s much while hating it with equal measure. Befre a seasn, after living in the cziness f my hme fr the winter mnths, I begin t rmanticize and desire the challenges f life in the bush.

I mainly plant trees n the cast f British Clumbia and get paid between 25 and 45 cents a tree. The jb can be prfitable: It gives planters the pprtunity t lead a raming lifestyle, with a temprary bligatin t spend a few mnths filling their bank accunts. But there are many challenges.

In the early hurs f the mrning, we jin ur teams and travel alng rugh rads deep int the wdlands. During the ride, we prepare urselves fr the difficult challenges that lay ahead.

When stepping ut f the trucks, ften in the puring rain, we’re faced with a steep chunk (块) f land that’s just been lgged (砍伐). I step int the rain and fill my bags with hundreds f tiny trees. The cnversatins with my team becme strategic with a few jkes t bst the md. Seasned tree-planters treat this mre like a sprt than a jb, and cmpetitin fills the air.

Once ur bags are full, we suppress (抑制) any reluctance and charge up that hillside. We jump frm lg t lg, and if they rll ut frm under ur feet, we catch nt branches – r anything within reach – and swing (摇摆) arund like mnkeys. We push thrugh stinging bushes. We stumble (跌跌撞撞) and fall cnstantly, always pushing urselves t g faster amng grups f insects that we ften breathe in.

While tree planting, I am cnfrnted with smene else; a self I thught I knew. It is a persn I try t cme t peace with n thse hillsides, during thse strange days f islatin and deep thinking.

Tree planting is a labratry f self-examinatin and grwth. Yu master yur mind, cnfrnting the wrst and the best in yur nature, pushing yurself as hard as yu can. A new versin f yurself awaits at the end f the experience.

Why d msquites buzz (嗡嗡叫) in yur ears? They can’t help it. Msquites’ wings make that annying buzz whenever they fly.

Bth male and female msquites buzz, but yu prbably wn’t ntice the nise f the males, because they dn’t desire yur bld. They stay away frm yur ears, eating nectar (花蜜), while the females cme t anny yu.

Scientists have discvered that buzzing is t help msquites find suitable mates. Since female msquites are larger, they mve their wings mre slwly. Males can recgnize the distinctive pitch (音高) f the females’ buzz. Luis M. Rth, wh studied yellw fever msquites fr the US Army during Wrld War II, nticed that males ignred females whenever the females were quietly resting, but when the females were flying, and therefre buzzing, the males wanted t mate (交配) with them. The males even reacted t recrdings f female msquites.

Scientists discvered what made the sund. It’s nt actually caused by the wings flapping. There’s an rgan at the base f the wings that makes the sund when the wings mve.

It wasn’t until mre recently that researchers Gabriella Gibsn and Ian Russell discvered that msquites actually change their buzz t “sing” t each ther befre they mate. When males and females fly nearby, they change the pitch f their buzz t match each ther, and if they match well enugh, they mate.

As scientists learn mre abut why msquites buzz, they can pssibly keep them frm mating. Fewer msquites mean fewer msquit bites, and fewer diseases being spread. Researcher Lauren Catr suggests that if scientists can make sterile (不生育的) male msquites wh “sing” t females just as well as fertile males, the females will chse the sterile males, and wn’t prduce fertile eggs.

There are als sme myths abut the msquites yu hear buzzing in yur ears. Sme peple say that msquites that buzz, dn’t bite. Indeed, as lng as they’re buzzing, they’re flying, s they wn’t bite yu. But nce they land, lk ut.

Accrding t the text, peple seldm ntice male msquites when they buzz because ______.

    A. their buzz is t lw t be nticed

    B. they dn’t buzz when they bite

    C. they avid humans and feed n nectar

    D. they prefer t stay in the dark

    B. Quiet female msquites are mre attractive t males.

    C. A msquit’s wing beat is respnsible fr its buzz.

    D. Male msquites are attracted by a female’s buzz.

    Befre msquites mate, they ______.

    A. buzz at a high pitch t each ther

    B. change and match their buzz

    C. dance with each ther in mid air

    D. fly in ppsite directins

Lauren Catr hpes the research n the buzz f msquites can help peple ______.

    A. cure sme deadly diseases

    B. cntrl the msquit ppulatin

    C. tell different msquit species apart

    D. change the way msquites cmmunicate

    D

Each year arund Tmb Sweeping Day, r Qingming Festival, villagers busy themselves picking leaves at tea gardens in suthern China.

Yu may have already knwn this tea traditin, because tea is China’s favrite drink. Yu may be surprised, hwever, that the UK als has tea traditins.

The UK has been in lve with tea since the 17th century, when merchants first brught it t the cuntry. Its ppularity has never waned (减少). Accrding t the Tea and Infusins Organizatin, the average British persn drinks mre than 900 cups a year.

In demgraphic (人口特性的) terms, Britain is quite varied. There are significant differences between peple accrding t regin, ethnicity (种族) and age. But a very basic difference – scial difference – is reflected in the ways that peple drink tea.

When peple think f the UK and tea, they generally have an image f the upper class in their heads. They imagine finely dressed ladies and gentlemen, sitting dwn with tiny sandwiches, drinking frm delicate prcelain (瓷器) cups, with their pinkie fingers raised.

This is knwn as “afternn tea”. It definitely (绝对地) happens, but it nly invlves a small minrity f the natin’s peple. Mst tea is drunk by the wrking ppulatin. These peple enjy tea at their jbs, nt while they are at their leisure.

Nr d they drink the same kind f tea as the ladies and gentlemen in the psh (豪华的) htels. Manual wrkers (体力劳动者) drink what is knwn as “builder’s tea”. The tea bag is left t “stew (焖)” in the mug (nt cup) fr a lng time. It will usually be heavily sweetened, perhaps because sugar is a surce f energy – and peple at wrk always need energy.

There are many British tea traditins. “Afternn tea” and “builder’s tea” are nly tw ways that British peple enjy tea. N matter what kind f tea peple drink, nr where peple drink it, all tea-drinking in the UK has a kind f ritual (仪式的) significance.

Almst all British peple wuld agree that tea is the first part f slving a prblem. When truble arises, smene will invariably say, “Let’s put the kettle n.” Nthing lks bad when yu have a warm cup – r mug – f tea in yur hands. As English actr Arthur Wing Piner put it, “Where there’s tea, there’s hpe.”

What d we knw abut tea drinking in the UK?

    A. Its histry dates back t the 18th century.

    B. British peple enjy tea in different ways.

    C. Afternn tea is gaining ppularity in the cuntry.

    D. An average British persn drinks a cup f tea every day.

    What is builder’s tea?

    A. It is a delicate tea fr peple at leisure.

    B. It is a sweet tea drunk at dinner fr energy.

    C. It is made by wrkers and served in psh htels.

    D. It’s a type f tea cmmnly drunk by wrkers at their jbs.

Arthur Wing Piner’s wrds are mentined t _______.

    A. express his great lve fr tea

    B. shw British tea has a lng histry

    C. stress that drinking tea makes peple wrk harder

    D. shw that drinking tea has special meaning t British peple

What is the text mainly abut?

    A. Tea drinking culture in the UK.

    B. The difference between Chinese tea and British tea.

    C. Hw tea drinking influences the lives f British peple.

    D. British tea traditins amng different scial classes.
