    Until last year, Zhang “BB” Xi was just anther 20-smething with a dream f making it big. The 23-year-ld frm Chngqing had arund 300,000 fans acrss all her scial media platfrms wh watched her vlgs. It was a large number, given her yuth.





    Survival f the fittest


    Frm the 800 amateurs Ruhnn identifies every mnth, between five and 10 are ffered a cntract. This gives Ruhnn exclusive prtrait rights and the right t perate the influencer’s scial media accunts and e-cmmerce stres. Influencers wrk clsely with Ruhnn t decide which prducts t market.





    The mdel isn’t unique t China: grew quickly in ther cuntries in the early 2010s as YuTube became a majr media platfrm and sme f its early stars celebrities. But it failed because many early adpters tk a fee fr managing their talent while prviding very little in return.
