Flu is a cmmn infectin f the nse and thrat，and smetimes the lungs. The cause is a virus that passes frm ne persn t anther. The virus spreads thrugh the air when an infected persn expels air suddenly.


Flu develps after the virus enters a persn’s nse r muth. The flu causes muscle pain，sudden high bdy temperature，breathing prblems and weakness. Generally，mst peple feel better after a week r tw. Medical experts have recgnized fr sme time that peple becme infected with flu during the winter mnths. But they did nt really knw why until recently.


American researchers say they nw knw why the flu virus spreads in the winter and nt in the summer. They say it is because the virus remains in the air lnger when the air is cld and dry.


Researchers in New Yrk carried ut twenty experiments with guinea pigs t investigate hw the virus spreads. The researchers fund the virus spread the mst when the temperature was abut five degrees Celsius and the humidity was twenty percent. Few f the guinea pigs develped flu as the temperature increased. The virus stpped spreading cmpletely at thirty degrees Celsius and eighty percent humidity. The researchers als fund that the animals spread the virus amng themselves nearly tw days lnger when the temperature was lw.


One f the researchers said the study shws that flu virus is mre likely t infect peple during an utdr walk n a cld day than in a warm rm. He said cld air helps the virus survive in the air and lw humidity helps it stay there lnger. That is because particles f the virus ride n the extremely small drps f water flating in the air. When the air is very humid，water drplets fall t the grund mre quickly.


The researchers say，hwever，that peple shuld nt stay in warm places all the time in cld weather t avid the flu. They say the best way t prevent the sickness is t get yearly injectins f a vaccine that prevents flu.
