The snow was falling and the roads had become dangerous. The schools were dismissed early, but much to my surprise, my appointment wasn’t canceled. So I went, feeling especially heroic. As far as I could see, I was risking my life to keep my word. Snow or no snow, I would be on time for my scheduled donation at the local blood center.
When I got there, I discovered I wasn’t alone. Four more “hero-types” were already lying back in donor chairs with lines attached to their veins (静脉), and machines quietly pumping away to collect their life-saving gifts.
Seeing my fellow donors honoring their own commitments, I realized why I was there. I lay back in my donor chair, ready to make a difference to the life of someone I would never meet.
To be honest, I’d never really thought about why I donate. I just did it. But a few months ago, during one of my regular donations I learned that my blood was specifically for a cancer patient and for a newborn baby — both patients needed what I would give in order to live. I’ve viewed my visits to the blood center differently ever since.
My wife Karen is a donor, too. And more importantly, she has been on the bone marrow list for fifteen years, ever since she signed up to provide bone marrow (骨髓) to a kindergartner with leukemia (白血病). That little girl died before Karen’s bone marrow could help her, but Karen was called again recently. Her test results were still on file, and it turned out she was a potential match for someone else. The caller asked Karen if she would still be willing to become a bone marrow donor. “Yes,” she said and then immediately began answering questions on the pages of paperwork for further testing. It was to race against time.
I wish I could say that this race was won. Unluckily, it wasn’t. The caller later thanked Karen for her participation and asked a few more questions — including whether or not she’d remain on the donor list. “Of course,” Karen answered.
We still keep making appointments. I don’t know whose life my donation may affect. Most likely it will be a stranger, but on some day the person needing blood could be you or me or maybe a loved one. It is worthwhile to take our time to donate. I like the sense of giving.
    4. Why was the man going out on such a snowy day?
    A. He was going to risk his life for fun.
    B. He was going to do a heroic deed to show off to others.
    C. He was going to give a donation to help others in need.
    D. He was going to have an important appointment with his wife.
    5. Who or what caused the man to view his visits to the blood center differently?
    A. A cancer patient and a newborn baby who needed what he gave to live.
    B. The fact that his wife would remain on the donor list after several failures.
    C. The fact that his wife signed up to provide bone marrow to a girl with leukemia.
    D. Four more “hero-types” lying back in donor chairs with lines attached to their veins.
    6. What does the author think of his wife Karen’s action?
    A. He objects to what she does. B. He thinks highly of what she does.
    C. He is indifferent to what she does. D. He doesn’t show any apparent attitude.
    7. Which of the following may the man agree with?
    A. Practice makes perfect. B. Where there is a will, there is a way.
    C. Constant dripping wears away a stone. D. The rose’s in her hand, the flavor in mine.
    C
Be black or white, the exact color of a person’s skin is determined by a combination of his parentage and random chance and it affects how every single person treats you. You can’t take your skin off, even if you’re terrified or ashamed to wear it, even if you’re sick and tired of wearing it.
Freddie Gray, who was arrested in 2016 for possessing a legal knife and died in police custody (拘留), was born Black. TamirRice, who barely lived more than one being Black, was shot at the age of 12 for playing with a toy gun in 2014. Breonna Taylor, who was shot and killed in March when two plainclothes police officers entered her apartment unannounced, didn’t choose to be Black. But the police officers who shot her chose their careers. They chose to shoot her, too. Police across America also chose to shoot 336 other unarmed Black people from 2013-2019.
Each of these victims did not possess a weapon at the time of their murder, and in all but few of the cases they lost their lives because someone “thought” they were reaching for a gun that turned out to be a wallet, cell phone or nothing at all. This is absolutely unacceptable. We’re not saying they shouldn’t have been captured with all necessary force and imprisoned accordingly. A criminal is a criminal and should be handled as such. But even a criminal, as long as he lives in this great country, is an American worthy of justified handling and a fair trial.
Black people don’t get to sign up for lives of discrimination and terror. They often found themselves moving through wave upon wave of white faces that usually mirrored the same emotions—shock, disbelief and anger. It is the fear of black skin that plays a part in each of these murders. African Americans can no longer tolerate the unjustified killings of their loved ones. As a country, it’s time to start effective dialogues to end this pitiless trend. It has to be a long struggle and pain before Black people overcome prejudice to win the chance of being understood by white ones.
    8. What is the author’s purpose of mentioning the murders in Paragraph 2?
    A. To provide examples of unjustified killings of black people.
    B. To give an explanation why police officers choose to shoot black people.
    C. To offer a description of police officers’ hatred towards black people.
    D. To make an analysis of how hard lives black people were living.
    9. What is the author’s attitude towards the killings mentioned in the text?
    A. Forgiving. B. Cautious.
    C. Disapproving. D. Indifferent.
    10. What can we infer from the text?
    A. The process of overcoming prejudice towards the black is on its way.
    B. Black people are ashamed to wear their skin color which leads to injustice.
    C. Black people will turn to violence to stop the unjustified killings among them.
    D. The police should have chosen a proper way to treat black “criminals”.
    11. What is the text mainly about?
    A. Sufferings of whites.
    B. Blacks’ calling for justice.
    C. Policemen’s fair trial.
    D. Fight for mutual trust.
    D
During those winter months, with windows overlooking long-dead gardens, leafless trees, and lawns that seem to have an ashy look about them, nothing calms the uneasy nerves more than the green plants surrounding the living spaces of one’s home. People browse through garden stores just to get a smell of chlorophyll (叶绿素) and to choose a plant or two to bring spring back into their winter-gray lives.
Now there is even more of a need for “the green” in light of recent articles warning us of the dangers of chemicals that we, ourselves, introduce into our homes. Each time we bring clothes home from the cleaners, we release those chemicals into the closed-in air of our homes. Every cleanser releases its own kind of fumes.
Some of the chemicals are formaldehyde (甲醛), chlorine, benzene, styrene, etc. Read the labels on many home products, the ingredients aren’t even listed! During the winter, when those same windows are shut tight, we breathe in these chemicals—causing symptoms much like allergies. In fact, most people probably dismiss the effects of these chemicals simply as some allergy or other. The truth is that we are experiencing a syndrome (症状) that is called Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. Now, what has this got to do with green plants? Everything healthy! Research has been conducted with two types of plants that have actually removed much of these harmful chemicals from the air.
The two plants that seem to be the best bet for ridding one’s home of such chemicals are ferns (蕨类植物) and palms. These plants release moisture (水分) and, as they do, pull chemicals from the air into their leaves. Even NASA has conducted some greenhouse experiments for long-term space exploration. Within hours, their plants had removed almost all traces of formaldehyde in the room. Both species of plants are ancient, dating back more than a hundred million years. Another feature they share is that they both live long lives, 100 years or more. This we expect from trees, but ferns and palms are plants; plants that can grow to 65 feet in the proper setting! Even their individual leaves live for one to two years (ferns) and one to nine years (palms). Perhaps it is their primary qualities that have contributed to their ability to purify their environment.
    12. Why does the author think we are in greater need of “the green” in our homes?
    A. To make us feel calmer and less worried.
    B. To bring our long-dead gardens back to life.
    C. To serve as decorations as well as refresh us.
    D. To get rid of harmful chemicals trapped there.
    13. According to the passage, which of the following statement is TRUE?
    A. The source of these chemicals released in our homes hasn’t been identified.
    B. The chemicals can be removed immediately the two plants are put into use.
    C. People tend to underestimate the effects of the chemical in the closed-in places.
    D. People usually buy household products without referring to the ingredients on them.
    14. As for the two plants, their primary qualities friendly to indoor environment include _____________.
    A. the release of their moisture
    B. their adaptability to indoor environment
    C. the ability to absorb chemicals and live long
    D. the fast growth and attractiveness of their leaves
    15. Which of the following may serve as the best title of the passage?
    A. Hidden Dangers in Your Home
    B. Research in the New Millennium
    C. NASA Experiment Has Found the Cure
    D. Common Houseplants May Purify Your Home
    第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
     根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Although people value intelligence—understanding, reasoning, the ability to learn—they also respect wisdom, or the knowledge and experience that we gain over a lifetime. In some ways, wisdom is like beauty: we value it, we desire it, and we know it when we see it. However, it is nearly impossible to define such a quality. 16
    1. Work at being social.
Studies show that people who stay connected to others show higher levels of wisdom than those who remain alone. 17 Next time you’re at a party or gathering, single out someone who’s standing alone and strike up a conversation.
    2. Practice being open-minded.
Wisdom involves understanding an issue without letting emotions get in the way. 18 Every day, make a note of the issues that bother you, and take a moment to see them from the other side.
    3. Learn how to say “I could be wrong”.
A wise person understands that it is impossible to know everything and that life is capable of taking unexpected turns. 19 Admitting that there are times when you could be mistaken will go a long way in solidifying your fame.
    4. Read the news.
20 If you don’t already read a daily paper or news online, start by going through a single front-page article from a major respected news source.
Almost everyone has the potential to become wiser, particularly if you strengthen these habits.
    A. Recognizing your errors can lead only to greater wisdom.
    B. But researchers have tried and here’s what they’ve found.
    C. Sharing interesting news can always be a good start of a friendship.
    D. Make an effort to join a new club, or invite an old friend for coffee.
    E. You do not have to admit your mistakes if you are really unwilling to.
    F. You cannot make balanced choices unless you understand world circumstances.
    G. Opening your mind means realizing that there is a life story behind everyone’s actions.

    Dear Jerry,
Learning that you are interested in the exhibition of the Palace Museum in its 600th anniversary, I’m writing to tell you about it.
The exhibition includes three topics: about the historical changes of the Palace Museum, about its architectural concepts and styles as well as the display of precious painting and calligraphy treasures. The exhibition is scheduled to last from September 10 to November 15. It is required that the visitors should book one week in advance on the official website.
I am looking forward to the exhibition because it is a good chance to experience the charm of Chinese excellent traditional culture.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
