I started teaching freshmen (大一新生) a required humanities (人文学科) curse at Stevens Institute f Technlgy a decade ag. The curse included Shakespeare, Descartes, Kant, Marx, Nietzsche, William James, Freud, Mead—yu knw, Western civilizatin's greatest minds.
I lve teaching the curse, but I dn't assume students lve taking it. S n the first day I asked, “Hw many f yu wuld skip this curse if it weren't required?” After I explained t them that they wuldn't hurt my feelings, almst all raised their hands.
They said they came t Stevens fr engineering cmputer science, math, physics, finance, digital music prductin, etc. They didn't see the pint f reading all these ld impractical things that have nthing t d with their future prfessins. When I asked them t guess why Stevens arranged these curses, smene said, smirking (假笑), “T make us wellrunded.”
Hearing the respnse, I really have t d smething t make_my_pitch_fr_the_curse. We live in a wrld increasingly ruled by science. And that's fine. But it is exactly because science is s pwerful that we need the humanities nw mre than ever. In yur science, mathematics and engineering classes, yu're given facts, answers, knwledge and truth. Yur prfessrs say, “This is hw things wrk.” They give yu certainty. The humanities, at least the way I teach them, give yu uncertainty, dubt and skepticism.
The humanities are subversive (颠覆性的). They weaken the statements f all authrities, whether plitical, religius r scientific. This skepticism is especially imprtant when it cmes t statements abut humanity, abut what we are, where we came frm, and even what we can be and shuld be.
If I d my jb by the end f this curse, yu'll questin all authrities, including me. Yu'll questin what yu've been tld abut the nature f reality, abut the purpse f life, abut what it means t be a gd persn. That, fr me, is the pint f the humanities: they keep us frm being trapped by ur wn desire fr certainty.
