TURIN, Italy, Feb. 15, 2006 (Xinhua net) -- Chinese Wang Meng won the women's 500m short track speed skating Wednesday night, reaping China's first gold medal in the Turin Winter Olympic Games.

The Olympic debutant (初次参赛者) led all the way to clock 44.345 seconds, winning the nation's third winter Olympic gold medal after Yang Yang's two in 2002.

Bulgarian Evgenia Radanova, world record holder and 2002 silver medalist, had to settle for a silver again with a time of 44.374 seconds. Canada's Anouk Leblang-Boucher got the bronze in 44.759 with Chinese Fu Tianyu disqualified for cross tracking.

The 20-year-old Wang, who has won four World Cup races over 500m, proved herself as the most consistent short tracker in the world. Her victory helped ease China's pain of losing an expected gold in the women's 500m long-track speed skating when World Cup leader Wang Manli came second to Russia's Svetlana Zhurova on Tuesday.

Like China's Athens Olympic champion Liu Xiang, Wang jumped onto the podium and waved excitedly to the cheering crowd. "Until I jumped onto the podium did I know my name had not yet been announced," Wang said, laughing. "I was just so excited and anxious to get onto the podium."

With the number of college graduates climbing to a record high this yearsome 2.12 million are entering the job market, an increase of 670,000, or 46.2 percent, over last year, many people are asking if China's first McDonald's generation", born in the early 1980s,can stand the intense competition and find a place in the job market. They say this will be a test of both China's job market and its carefree younger generation.

Do not worry. We'll get whatever we want"they tell each other to ease their own anxiety.

Born in the early days of the country's reform and opening to the outside world, growing up in the market economy, the youngsters, familiar with McDonald's and Mickey Mouse, love to eat hamburgers, and wear foreign brand jeans and T-shirts and worship Bill Gates. Compared with their parents, they enjoy more freedom in looking for a joband with that freedom coming burdens.

These college graduates are seen scouring recruitment information in newspapers and journals, the Internet and job markets nationwide.

Shortly after hotel management major, Hao Wenhua, a young woman from Chongqing in Southwest China, failed the recruitment test of a five star hotel in Guilin, South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. She appeared at a job market in Nanning, approximately 300 kilometers from Guilin, looking rather tired.

Your mobile phone rings, and instead of usual electronic signals, it's playing your favorite music. A friend sends you a favorite song to cheer you up. One day, a record company might forward new records and music videos to your phone.

The mobile business is getting into the music business. For the moment, the interest is in pleasant ring tones, but some companies are hoping to take full advantage of the next generation of mobile phones---all purpose gadgets that blend phone, personal stereo, video player and Internet browser into one. Finally, record companies might send new records and videos to fans who register their cell phone numbers.

The fans could pass music or songs along to friends--- a kind of musical trading card. Unlike Internet tracks, mobile phone downloads would be easy for record companies to control, said former record industry official Ralph Simon, who is now chairman of your mobile, based in Santa Monic, California. If you pass a song along to other phones through a network, each phone can be charged, said Simon. It's like going through a toll (收费)gate. There's more possibility for copyright control than there is on the Internet.

Massachusetts-based converse is offering a service in Portugal and the Netherlands that let people record tunes on their voice mail or send music as presents to friends. Finally, people might be able to sing karaoke and pass them along. The company is sure that people will want to use music to reach out and touch someone.

A mobile phone is not a listening machine, and you'll be disappointed if you think you can change it into a radio, said Ohad Ouziel, a creative manager for Converse in Israel. But if someone sends you a song while you are on vacation, you appreciate the feeling.

    48. The title of this passage should be _______.

    C. The Internet, A Modern Invention

A good book for children should simply be a good book in its own right, says Mollie Hunter. Born and brought up near Edinburgh, Mollie has devoted her talents to writing primarily for young people. She firmly believes that there is always and should always be a wider audience for any good book whatever its main market is. In Mollie's opinion it is necessary to make full use of language and she enjoys telling a story, which is what every writer should be doing. If you aren't telling a story, you're a very dead writer indeed, she says. I have this great love of not only the meaning of language but of the music of language, she says. This love goes back to early childhood. I've told stories all my life. I had a school teacher who used to ask us what we would like to be when we grew up and, because my family always had dogs, and I was very good at handling them, I said I wanted to work with dogs, and the teacher always said Nonsense, Mollie, dear, you'll be a writer.' So finally I thought that this woman must have something, since she was a good teacher and I decided when I was nine that I would be a writer.

This childhood intention is described in her novel, A Sound of Chariots, which although written in the third person is clearly autobiographical (自传体的) and gives a picture both of Mollie's ambition (理想) and her struggle towards its achievement. Thoughts of her childhood inevitably(不可避免地)brought thoughts of the time when her home was still a village with buttercup meadows and strawberry fieldssadly now covered with modern houses.I was once taken back to see it and I felt that somebody had lain dirty hands all over my childhood. I'll never go back, she said. Never.”“When I set one of my books in Scotland, she said,I can recall my romantic (浪漫的) feelings as a child playing in those fields, or watching the village blacksmith at work. And that's important, because children now know so much so early that romance can't exist for them, as it did for us.

    57. What does Mollie Hunter feel about the nature of a good book?

    A. It should not aim at a narrow audience.

    B. It should be attractive to young readers.

    C. It should be based on original ideas.

    D. It should not include too much conversation.

    58. In Mollie Hunter's opinion, which of the following is one sign of a poor writer?

    A. Being poor in life experience.

    B. Being short of writing skills.

    C. The weakness of description.

    D. The absence of a story.

    59. ______ made Mollie Hunter determined to be a writer.

    A. Loving of telling stories       B. Her early writing experience

    C. Her teacher                 D. Mollie's ambition

    60. What's the writer's purpose in this text?

    A. To describe Mollie Hunter's most successful books.

    B. To provide information for Mollie Hunter's existing readers.

    C. To introduce Mollie Hunter's work to a wider audience.

D.To share her enjoyment of Mollie Hunter's books.

    Dear editor,

I'm writing to tell you about the discussion we held on whether it is good to keep animals in zoos. Those who favor the idea think it provides chances for people to see wild animals. It might also develop people's love for animals and nature. Besides, animals in zoos can be protected from dangers in the wild.

However, those who are against the idea think that it's a waste of money and labor to keep animals in zoos. It'll also damage the balance of nature. Animals will lose their freedom if caged in zoos.    x

I personally feel it is wrong to take animals away from their natural living areas and keep them locked up.

    Yours sincerely,

    Li Hua
