There is probably no field of human activity in which our values and lifestyles are shown more clearly and strongly than they are in the clothes that we choose to wear. The dress of an individual is a kind of “sign language” that communicates a set of information and is usually the basis on which immediate impressions are formed. Traditionaly, a concern for clothes was considered to be an affair of females, while men took pride in the fact that they wre completely lacking clothes consciousness.
This type of American culture is gradually chaging as man's dress takes on greater variety and colour. Even as early as 1955, a research in Michigan said that men considered that the value of clothing in daily life was very important. White-collar workers in particular viewed dress as a symbol of ability, which could be used to impress or influence others, especially in the work situation. The white-collar worker was described as extremely concerned about the impression his clothing made on his boss. Although bule-collar workers were less aware that they might be judged on the basis of their clothing, they recognized that any difference from the accepted pattern of dress would be made fun of by fellow workers.
Since that time, of course, the patterns have changed, the typical white-collar worker may now be wearing the blue shirt, while the blue-collar may be wearing a white short, but the importance of drss has not become less. Other researchers in recent years have helped to prove its importance in the lives of individuals at various age levels and in different social and economic status groups.

Internet use appears to cause a decline in psychological well-being(健康), according to the research at Carnegie Mellon University.
Even people who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet experienced more depression and loneliness than those who logged on less frequently, the two-year stuey showed. And it wasn't that people who were already feeling bad spent more time on the Internet, but that using the Net actually appeared to cause the bad feelings.
Researchers are puzzling over the results, which were completely contrary to their expectation. They expected that the Net would prove socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others.
The fact that Internet use reduces time available for family and friends may account for the drop in well-being, researchers hypothesized(假设). Faceless, bodiless “virtual” communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversation, and the relationships formed through it may be shallower. Another possibility is that exposure to the wider world via the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.
“But it's important to remember this is not about the technology; it's about how it is used,” says psychologist Chiritine Riley of Intel, one of the study's sponsors. “It really points to the need for considering social factors in terms of how you design applications and services for technology.”
