In 1920, Walter and Cordelia Knott moved to Buena Park, California to farm 20 acres of rented land. Today, that land is part of the 160acre Knott's Berry Farm.
In the 1930s, Anaheim Parks Supritendent Rudolph Boysen had experimented with a new type of berry but the plants kept dying. Walter took the plants, nursed them back to health and named the new berry after its originator. Today, all boysenberries in the world can find their roots in Knott's Berry Farm. Mrs Knott added the family income by opening a chicken dinner restaurant, and then Walter built the “Ghost Town” attraction outside its doors to keep waiting diners entertained.
In the 1960s, the Calico Mine Ride and Timber Mountain Log Ride were added and the Knott's built its second themed area:Fiesta Village in honour of California's early Spanish heritage. The third themed area opened in 1975—the Roaring 20s(rethemed in 1996 into The Boardwalk)—featuring the world's first roller coaster.
In 1983, the Knott family opened a first in the amusement park industry with its sixacre land—Camp Snoopy, the world's first theme park “Land”designed specifically for kids. Wild Water Wilderness, a fouracre outdoor river wilderness area featuring the whitewater rafting ride Bigfoot Rapids, was added in 1988, followed by Indian Trails in 1993.

A boy lost in the wilderness was saved by a kangaroo. That's the story floating around after Simon Kruger, a 7yearold boy, was rescued from Australia's Deep Creek Conservation Park.
According to Australia's 7 News, the saga began when Simon wandered off after the family ate a picnic lunch. Apparently the lost boy drifted away to pick flowers for his mom. Instead, he got hopelessly lost—and without adequate warm clothing to stay out overnight in the forest.
A police search, including helicopters, followed. But Simon wasn't found for 24 hours—even though he was ultimately discovered only about half a kilometer from the family's campsite. His father Etienne Kruger thinks his son was disoriented when the rain and wind swept in after he got lost.
However it happened, Simon wasn't found for almost a full 24 hours. The overnight weather was cold and wet, dropping to a low of around 43 degrees Fahrenheit.
So how did the lost boy survive the cold, wet night? The family said that Simon's flowers for his mom attracted a kangaroo. His dad explained, “A kangaroo came closer to him and ate the flowers from him, and the kangaroo fell asleep next to him. I think God sent a kangaroo to keep him warm.”
