When I was about 11 years old, I was at my friend Jenny's house after school one day, and we were doing homework. While I was there a friend of Jenny's mom's came over to visit.
I don't remember her name or__36__what her face looked like. I just remember her__37__, her voice and the lesson she taught me.
I can still see her hands reaching out for mine in our __38__. They were so beautiful, I thought. Then I heard her saying, (and not at all in a condescending(居高临下)manner)“Oh no, that is NOT __39__you shake hands. Let me show you how.”
After that, I just remember her voice explaining the__40__of a good handshake,__41__a positive sense of __42__, looking the other person in the eye, making that first moment__43__... I think in that exchange I first understood__44__.
I respected her for taking the __45__to teach me about one of those subtleties(微妙的事情)in life. I__46__the fact that she didn't__47__down to me because I was 11 or because I didn't __48__something. And so because of that I felt somewhat respected, I mean in the way she__49__me. It felt good to be talked to like a __50__person, and not like whatever the__51__perception(观点)of an 11yearold would be. I also appreciate her instilling(逐渐灌输)the idea that if someone doesn't know or isn't__52__of something, have compassion(热情)and point him or her in the right__53__; don't be afraid to share your__54__.
I think of her every time I meet someone__55__... and I'm so thankful for her little lesson.
36.A.else B.even
C.still D.otherwise
37.A.figure B.arms
C.eyes D.hands
38.A.expectation B.introduction
C.interview D.reception
39.A.how B.when
C.why D.where
40.A.procedure B.value
C.attraction D.importance
41.A.indicating B.conveying
C.predicting D.producing
42.A.self B.pride
C.others D.impression
43.A.preserve B.occur
C.matter D.last
44.A.manners B.equality
C.charm D.respect
45.A.time B.chance
C.efforts D.occasion
It takes sb. time to do sth.“花费某人时间做……”。
46.A.recalled B.preferred
C.appreciated D.realized
47.A.look B.stand
C.bend D.talk
bend down“弯下腰来”,look down upon/on“瞧不起;歧视”。
48.A.know B.like
C.feel D.correct
49.A.reminded B.treated
C.taught D.helped
50.A.close B.good
C.real D.great
51.A.general B.extreme
C.realistic D.wrong
52.A.short B.careful
C.aware D.fond
53.A.way B.direction
C.aspect D.stage
in the right way表示“以正确的方式”,而此作者表达的意思是:把对方引导到正确的方向上来。
54.A.knowledge B.sense
C.wisdom D.experience
55.A.important B.strange
C.familiar D.new
A
We use both words and gestures to express our feelings, but the problem is that these words and gestures can be understood in different ways. It is true that a smile means the same thing in any language. So does laughter and crying. There are also a number of striking similarities in the way different animals show the same feelings. Dogs, tigers and humans, for example, often show their teeth when they are angry. This is probably because they are born with those behavior patterns.
Fear is another emotion that is shown in much the same way all over the world. In Chinese and in English literature, a phrase like“he went pale and began to tremble”suggests that the man is either very afraid or he has just got a very big shock. However, “he opened his eyes wide”is used to suggest anger in China whereas in English it means surprise. In Chinese“surprise”can be described in a phrase like they stretch out their tongues! Sticking out your tongue in English is an insulting gesture or expresses strong dislike.
Even in the same culture, people differ in ability to understand and express feelings. Experiments in America have shown that women are usually better than men at recognizing fear, anger, love and happiness on people's faces. Other studies show that older people usually find it easier to recognize or understand body language than younger people do.
56.According to the passage,________.
A.we can hardly understand what people's gestures mean
B.we can not often be sure what people mean when they describe their feelings in words or gestures
C.words can be better understood by older people
D.gestures can be understood by most of the people while words can not
57.People's facial expressions may be misunderstood because________.
A.people of different ages may have different understanding
B.people have different cultures
C.people of different sex may understand a gesture in a different way
D.people of different countries speak different languages
答案:B 由文章最后一段第一句“Even in the same culture,...”
58.In the same culture,________.
A.people have different abilities to understand and express feelings
B.people have the same understanding of something
C.people never fail to understand each other
D.people are equally intelligent
答案:A 由末段第一句“Even in the...express feelings.”

There are many languages in the world. Do you know there is a language that is used in every country in the world? The people who use it are young and old, short and tall, thin and fat. It is everybody's second language. It is easy to understand, although you can't hear it. It is sign language.
When you wave to a friend who is across the street, you are using sign language. When you smile at someone, you are saying,“I want to be friendly.”,but you are not using speech. You are using sign language. When you raise your hand in class, you are saying, “Please ask me. I think I know the correct answer.”
Babies who can't talk can point at things. They are using sign language. A policeman who wants to stop traffic holds up his hands. He is using sign language.
Many years ago, a French priest,Charles Michael de Epee, became interested in education for deaf people. He invented a finger alphabet(字母表). It is still in use. People can make the sign for letters and spell words with their hands, and deaf people can read and understand them. Soon there were schools for the deaf in many countries. The only university for the deaf is Gallaudet College in Washington D.C..
Today, in the United States, there are special TV news programs for deaf people. The newsreader tells the news in sign language. At the same time, the words appear on the TV screen.
The actors in the Theatre of Deaf don't spell every word. Sometimes they use hand signs. When they put two hands together,it means sandwich. They can make a roof with their hands when they want to show a house. One finger in front of an actor's mouth can mean quiet. You can talk to people who are behind windows that are closed. And when you go swimming with your friends, you can have conversations under water.
How many hand signs do you use every day?

Your gestures and how you hold yourself during a presentation convey as much as words might. You should face the audience rather than turn your back to them. Here are some more tips.
Don't gaze down. Never look away from your audience. Never lose eye contact with those who have come to hear you speak. Eye contact helps you connect with people and win their trust.
Don't play with your hands. Playing with your hands is distracting. Unless you are pointing to something in your presentation or making a big movement, keep your hands by your side.
Don't turn away from the audience. “Nobody wants to look at your back,” says Rosenthal, CEO of Communispond in East Hampton, NY. And you often can't be heard if you are speaking to the screen. Rosenthal likes the “think, turn, talk” method. Look at an item you are discussing to gather your thoughts, turn to look at the audience, and then start speaking.
Don't roll your eyes. You don't want to distract your audience with visual effects like rolling your eyes. This is especially true when you're responding to questions, or comments, and you don't want to appear impatient.
Don't chortle(咯咯笑). “Nobody wants to see a clown performing unless, of course, you're at the circus,” says Rosenthal.
Don't haw(支吾). Do your best to avoid “filler” words. Keep the “um”, “you know” and “like” out of your speech.
Don't look messy. You should be neat and organized. Dress for the environment.
So what should you do? Smile. Stand. Make eye contact. Open your arms. Speak loudly. Rosenthal says, “Plan for success. Look good, sound good, and know your material.”

No matter how well you understand a foreign language, misunderstanding still exists between native speakers and you. Here is such an example.
Three young Frenchmen were travelling in Britain. Though they had taken a few English lessons before their holiday, they were often in trouble because of their misunderstanding of English. One day they talked about their misfortunes(不幸) together.
The first Frenchman said, “I once heard someone shout ‘Look out’, I put my head out of a window and a bucket(一桶) of water fell on me.”
The second Frenchman said, “I was once in a ship and heard the captain shouted, ‘All hands on decks(甲板).’ I put my hands on the deck and someone walked on them.”
The third Frenchman said, “I once called early on an English friend and the maid (女佣) who came to the door said,‘He's not up yet’ When I went again for him, she said,‘He's not down yet’. I said, ‘If he's not up and he's not down, where is he?’ She said,‘He's still upstairs now. When I told you he was not up I meant he had not got up yet, so he has not come downstairs by now.’”

Body language is a nonverbal communication that becomes a key in understanding children's feelings and thoughts. The following are the basic components of body language of children:
Face—Shortly after birth,a baby shows facial expression reflecting innermost(内心深处的) feelings. At the age of three, a child has different innermost emotional expressions.
Posture—Once toddlers(学步的儿童) begin to move, they show a variety of body postures. For example, when they move slowly and hunch their shoulders(耸肩), it means they are sad.
Hands and fingers—If your children close their hands and clench them light, they are certainly upset and angry. However, if their fingers open and their arms hang beside their body, it means that they are relaxed.
Foot—If your children move their foot forward and backward, it indicates that they are thinking about something or they may feel guilty about what they have said, or they are frightened.
Distance—When a child is in a bad mood, he creates a distance between you and him by sitting in the opposite corner of the room. Otherwise, he wants to hug you when he is frightened.
It is better for you to understand some facts about body language in order to build a better relationship between you and your child. The following points are some facts about body language:
Body language is more often used than spoken language. The results of a study showed that less than 10% of emotion was expressed in words, but more than 90% was expressed in body language. Words are more often used by children to communicate the facts, while body language is used to communicate emotions.
Body language is less controllable than spoken language. Smile, body postures, the movement of hands and feet, eye contact, and other gestures are done unconsciously.
When you are trying to understand a child's body language, do not forget that body language is not an exact science. Your understanding is not always right. Increasing your experience by paying careful attention to children in every situation is the best way to improve your ability to read a child's body language.

Dear_Mr._Headmaster,
I_am_Li_Yue,_a_student_from_Class_1,_Senior_Ⅱ. I am writing to draw you attention to some improper behaviour among us students: littering and scribbling. It makes our school dirty and unpleasant, and does harm to the image of our school. I always feel ashamed whenever I see this. It is clearly not appropriate for a student to litter and scribble about. I wonder if the school could place more dustbins around and set up specific rules against such behaviour. At the same time, students should be encouraged to develop good habits and better behave themselves. I believe that, with the joint efforts of both teachers and students, our school will become a more enjoyable place in the near future.
Thank you for your consideration.
Yours_faithfully,
Li_Yue
