IV. Teaching procedure:.

Step I : Greetings

     The teacher greet the whole class.

Step II:  To show teaching aims.

Step III: Fast reading

Fast reading for general ideas

Ask the students to read the text quickly and get main idea of the passage.

What are they mainly talking about?

The similarities and differences about the ancient Olympics and modern Olympics.

Step IV: Scanning

Ask the students scan the text and find out answers for the following two questions:

2. What does he say when he hears that women are also allowed to join in ?

3. How does  Pausanias feel when he hears the Olympic Games are also about being able to run faster, jump higher and throw further?

Step V: Careful reading

   (1).Read the passage again and try to judge the following statements true or false.

   1. Both the Summer and Winter Olympics are held every two years.  

2.There are running races in the Winter Olympics. 

3.Women were admitted to join in the old Olympics. 

4.All the competitors compete for money.

5. The Olympics were born in Greece.   

   (2). Read the passage again ,and findout the similarities and differents between the old Olympics and the Modern Olympics.

Step VI: Discussion

 1.Why do many countries want to host the Olympic games while others do not?

2.Do you think that the Game will bring the host city (or the country) a lot of benefits? Why ?

   (Give students about 3 minutes to have a discussion ,then ,share their opinion with other students.)

Step VII: Homework

1. Find more information about the Games after class, and prepare a short speech by using these information.

2.Finish the comprehending exercises 1 & 2.

3. Underline the new words and phrase and some parts you find difficult to understand.
