Jhn Snw was brn in Yrk n March 15th, 1813, the ldest f nine children.
His father wrked as a labrer. While pr, his parents were determined t give their children whatever educatinal pprtunities they culd affrd. He was educated at a private schl in his native city until the age f furteen, when he was apprenticed (当学徒) t William Hardcastle, a surgen (外科医生) living at Newcastle-n-Tyne.
After serving fr a shrt time as a surgen and unqualified assistant during the chlera epidemic f 1831-1982, he became in Octber 1836 a student at the Hunterian Schl f medicine in Great Windmill Street, Lndn. He began t attend the medical practice at the Westminster Hspital in the fllwing Octber.
He graduated M.D. f the University f Lndn n 20 Dec. 1844, and in 1850 he was admitted a licentiate f the Ryal Cllege f Physicians.
