    LISTENING TEXT
CM: Are there ther famus Chinese navigatrs r is he the nly ne?LH: He is the nly ne we've gt evidence fr.CM: S there may have been thers?LH: We dn't knw. That's because a later Emperr may have destryed a lt fevidence f ther vyages.CM: I see. Where did Zheng He g?
LH: The dcuments tell us that he was brn in Yunnan. He built a pillar t recrdhis achievements. It states that he made seven vyages and visited mre than thirty cuntries. CM: Tell me abut his vyages.LH: Well, n his first vyage he visited Calicut in India. The peple there were very impressed and a little frightened when they saw s many large ships. May the strangest argument win!
The fllwing infrmatin given may help yu make yur arguments well.
The gvernment can remve pirates frm the seas. Then they can tax the traders mre.
Armies t the nrth f China are a cnstant and very real threat. They had wars with the Chinese army in the past and may d s again if China is nt prepared.
The vyages are very impressive and make peple in distant lands recgnize the greatness f China.
T defend China against the armies frm the nrth is very cstly and needs many sldiers. There' will be n mney fr a fleet.
If we d nt cntinue the vyages we will lse diplmatic and trading cnnectins.
There is little reasn t cntinue freign trade. China is s large that it des nt need freign trade t develp ecnmically.
(Em = Emperr)Em: Thse against the vyages may maketheir arguments nw.S1: Yur Excellency, we wuld like t suggest that yu d nt cntinue with these vyages. They are expensive and take many sldiers, wh culd be prtecting Chinese brders, away n trading expeditins. This means ur peple are left expsed t attacksby armies frm the nrth.
    Sample debate
S2: We are a great cuntry and d nt need t trade with ther freign cuntries t succeed ecnmically. Selling gds within ur brders is quite enugh tsecure ur future. S, Yur Excellency, there seems t be n reasn t cntinue these vyages.Em: Thank yu. Nw let me hear the arguments f thse wh want these vyagest cntinue.
S3: Thank yu, Yur Excellency. These vyages are very impressive and many peple are nw able t recgnize the greatness f China. They help build diplmatic relatins with ther cuntries. What is mre, we can c-perate with thercuntries t clear the Suth China Sea f pirates and ther trublesme peple.
S4: In additin these links can help us with ur freign trade. We can sell manythings t these cuntries. Their rulers ften ask fr mre silk and prcelain gds and are very eager fr ur friendshipand c-peratin. With ur freign trade cnnectins we can increase ur psitin inthis area and spread ur influence even wider.
Em: Thank yu fr yur advice. I have thught fr a lng time n this matter andI agree that trade with ther cuntries is gd. We can use this pprtunity t spread the greatness f China and t increase ur influence in this regin. It wuld als help ur peple if we cleared the Suth China Sea f pirates. They causedifficulties t ur fishermen and traders
and hurt many inncent lives. As fr ur nrthern brder, I will secure that by using ther trps and make sure we will be secure in the future. Thank yu fr yur help. The vyages will cntinue!
