    Surf lifesaving clubs are ppular in Australia. They were riginally frmed t prvide a rescue service fr swimmers wh get int danger n beaches. The clubs are vluntary rganizatins whse members patrl the beaches fr free. As well as carrying ut lifeguard duties,
    Backgrund infrmatin
    the clubs hld many scial events and cmpetitins related t the beach and swimming. Children between 7 and 15 can jin as junir members, called nippers. The club prvides activities fr junir members at weekends and in the hlidays. They receive training in lifesaving as well as taking part in healthy exercise at the beach.
    As much f Australia’s castline can be dangerus fr inexperienced swimmers, surf lifesavers determine the safest place fr peple t swim and place flags n the beach t shw peple where it is safe. Bathers are encuraged t “swim between the flags.
    Businesses and the cmmunity in general raise mney r dnate equipment such as bat and canes, sun shelters, lifesaving equipment and flags. On weekends, when vlunteer lifesavers are at wrk, sme twn cuncils pay lifeguards t patrl the mst ppular beaches.
    Several times during the summer, surf lifesaving clubs hld carnivals at which they display their lifesaving skills and hld cmpetitins between different clubs. Each club has a different unifrm, cnsisting f a swimming cstume and a T-shirt. Lifesavers als wear caps in their club clrs s that they can be easily identified when they are in the water.
