(2017·广西五市联考)The ancient Mayan civilizatin cllapsed due t a centurylng drught, a new research suggests.
Minerals taken frm Belize's famus underwater cave, knwn as the Blue Hle, as well as lagns(环礁湖)nearby, shw that an extreme drught ccurred between A. D. 800 and A.D. 1000, right when the Mayan civilizatin ended. After the rains returned, the Mayans mved nrth—but they disappeared again a few centuries later, and that disappearance ccurred at the same time as anther dry perid, the sediments(沉积物) reveal.
Althugh the findings aren't the first t tie a drught t the end f the Mayan culture, the new results strengthen the case that dry perids were indeed the cause. That's because the data came frm several spts in a regin central t the Mayan heartland, said study cauthr Andre Drxler, an Earth scientist at Rice University.
Frm A. D. 300 t A. D. 700, the Mayan civilizatin flurished in the Yucatan Peninsula. These ancient Mesamericans built great pyramids, mastered astrnmy, and develped bth a writing system and a calendar system, which is famus fr predicting that the wrld wuld end in 2012.
But in the centuries after A.D. 700, the civilizatin's building activities slwed and the culture fell int war and unrest.
The evidence fr a drught has been grwing in recent years. A 2012 study in the jurnal Science analyzed a 2,000yearld stalagmite(石笋)frm a cave in suthern Belize and fund that sharp decreases in rainfall cincided with perids f decline in the culture. But the data came frm just ne cave, which meant it was difficult t make predictins fr the area as a whle, Drxler said.
T lk fr signs f a drught, the team drilled the sediments in the Blue Hle f Lighthuse Lagn. The lagns are surrunded n all sides by thick walls f cral reefs. During strms r wetter perids, excess water runs ff frm rivers and streams, vertps the retaining walls, and is depsited in a thin layer at the tp f the lagn. Frm there, all the sediments frm these streams settle t the bttm f the lagn, piling n tp f each ther and leaving a recrd f the histrical climate.
The team fund that during the perid between A.D. 800 and A.D. 1000, when the Mayan civilizatin cllapsed, there were just ne r tw trpical cyclnes (气旋) every tw decades, as ppsed t the usual five r six. After that, the Mayans mved nrth, building at sites such as Chichen Itza, in what is nw Mexic.
    7.What happened after an extreme drught between A.D. 800 and A.D. 1000?
A.The Mayans were suffering a heavy fld.
B.The Mayans suddenly disappeared frm the Earth.
C.The Mayans were ften attacked by trpical cyclnes.
D.The Mayans mved t places that is nw called Mexic.
8.What is the main idea f Paragraph 4?
A.The achievements f the Mayan civilizatin.
B.The predictin the Mayan civilizatin made.
C.The effects the Mayan civilizatin had n humans.
D.The backgrund where the Mayan civilizatin began.
9.Why did the team drill the sediments in the Blue Hle f Lighthuse Lagn?
A.T learn hw the Blue Hle came int being.
B.T knw what lies n the bttm f the lagn.
C.T study the recrd f the histrical climate.
D.T see hw excess water runs ff frm rivers and streams.
10.What did Andre Drxler think f the analysis f the 2,000yearld stalagmite?
    A.Amazing. B.Ridiculus.
    C.Reasnable. D.Unreliable.

10.解析:选D。考查推理判断。根据文章第六段的最后一句话“But the data came frm just ne cave, which meant it was difficult t make predictins fr the area as a whle,Drxler said.”可知,Andre Drxler认为这种数据具有片面性,不可靠。故答案为D项。

(2017·四川成都诊断)My wife and I, recently driving thrugh Arizna, stpped at a “cllectr's shp” in Tucsn, where stnes and minerals f many kinds were n display. During the visit, we were taken int a small rm where rdinarylking rcks were laid ut n shelves. Had I seen them n sme hillside, I wuld nt have given them a secnd thught. As I lk at my universe and walk amng my fellw humans, I have the deep belief that hidden realities are all arund us: there in the physical wrld, and there als in the human wrld.

My rdinary eyes tend t stp shrt at thse envelpes we call human bdies. But we have learned that by turning n a certain pwer we can see thrugh t the inside f these envelpes.
We call this extra pwer “imaginatin”. At its highest, we call it “empathy”, the pwer t see thrugh and t feel thrugh t the inner life f ther human beings. When we turn n this lamp f imaginative sensitivity, we make the rdinary human beings arund us cme excitingly alive.
When we are aware that there are glries f life still hidden frm us, we walk humbly (谦逊地) befre the Great Unknwn. But we d mre than this: we try t increase ur pwers f seeing and feeling s that we can turn what is still unknwn int what is warmly and understandingly knwn. This, I believe, is ur great human adventure.

B.ur eyes stp shrt at rdinary human beings
C.we try hard t discver the hidden glries f life
D.we are aware f the truth f hidden realities
