Aswan is a city n the Nile in Egypt. As waters frm East Africa flwed dwn the river, the water in the Nile brught nutrients and minerals that made the sil arund the Nile fertile and ideal fr farming, but at the same time, it caused serius flds. S, t prevent the river’s flding, generate electricity and prvide water fr agriculture, the Aswan High Dam was built.
In 1899, the cnstructin f the first dam began and lasted until 1902. The dam was 1,900 meters lng and 54 meters high then. Hwever, the dam was sn fund nt big enugh and the height f the dam was raised twice. When the dam was almst verflwed again in 1946, it was decided that rather than raise the dam a third time, a secnd dam wuld be built 6 km upriver. Prper planning began in 1952. At first, the USA and Britain were t help with the finance cnstructin. But bth natins cancelled the ffer fr reasns nt entirely knwn. At last, the Sviet Unin stepped in, and pssibly a third f the cst f the dam was paid fr as a gift. The Sviets als prvided technicians and heavy machinery.Cnstructin began in 1960, and was cmpleted n July 21,1970.
The Aswan High Dam is 3,600 meters in length, and 111 meters high. It prduces a hydrelectric utput f 2.1 gigawatts and allws fr the cnnectin f mst Egyptian villages t electricity.
In additin t the benefits, hwever, damming the Nile caused a number f issues.

Narratr:The Great Wall winds thrugh vast muntains, smetimes visible, smetimes hidden. Once a great prject that underwent 23 centuries f cnstructin, many sectins f it have nw fallen int ruin r even 1.disappeared withut a trace, depending n when they were built.

This is clearly an astnishing figure, fr it is fur times lnger than what has been described in the textbks f China as the “Wanli Changcheng(10,000-Mile Lng Wall)”f the Qin Dynasty.
Since 2006, Mr Mei, tgether with surveyrs and archaelgical experts, has been measuring this sectin f the Great Wall. This, bviusly, is a tugh but fun task.
