In the mid-1990s,Tom Bissell taught English as a volunteer in Uzbekistan. He left after seven months, physically broken and having lost his mind.A few years later, still attracted to the country,he returned to Uzbekistan to write an article about the disappearance of the Aral Sea.
His visit, however, ended up involving a lot more than that. Hence this book,Chasing the Sea:Lost Among the Ghosts of Empire in Central Asia, which talks about a road trip from Tashkent to Karakalpakstan, where millions of lives have been destroyed by the slow drying up of the sea.It is the story of an American travelling to a strange land, and of the people he meets on his way:Rustam, his translator,a lovely 24-year-old who picked up his colorful English in California,Oleg and Natasha, his hosts in Tashkent, and a string of foreign aid workers.
This is a quick look at life in Uzbekistan, made of friendliness and warmth, but also its darker side of society. In Samarkand,Mr Bissell admires the architectural wonders, while on his way to Bukhara he gets a taste of police methods when suspected of drug dealing. In Ferghana,he attends a mountain funeral(葬礼) followed by a strange drinking party. And in Karakalpakstan,he is saddened by the dust storms, diseases and fishing boats stuck miles from the sea.
Mr Bissell skillfully organizes historical insights and cultural references, making his tale a well-rounded picture of Uzbekistan, seen from Western eyes. His judgment and references are decidedly American,as well as his delicate stomach. As the author explains, this is neither a travel nor a history book,or even a piece of reportage.Whatever it is,the result is a fine and vivid description of the purest of Central Asian traditions.
    11. What is the purpose of this text?
    A. To introduce a book.
    B. To explain a cultural phenomenon.
    C. To remember a writer.
    D. To recommend a travel destination.

As data and identity theft becomes more and more common, the market is growing for biometric (生物测量)technologies—like fingerprint scans—to keep others out of private e-spaces.At present, these technologies are still expensive, though.
Researchers from Georgia Tech say that they have come up with a low-cost device (装置) that gets around this problem:a smart keyboard. This smart keyboard precisely measures the cadence (节奏) with which one types and the pressure fingers apply to each key.The keyboard could offer a strong layer of security by analyzing things like the force of a user’s typing and the time between key presses. These patterns are unique to each person. Thus, the keyboard can determine people’s identities, and by extension, whether they should be given access to the computer it’s connected to—regardless of whether someone gets the password right.
    31. Where is this text most likely from?
    A. A diary. B. A guidebook.
    C. A novel. D. A magazine.
·第一步 确定题干中的关键信息:this text most likely from
·第二步 定位到原文,寻找相关信息:根据本文的话题“智能键盘”以及第二段中的“Researchers from Georgia Tech say that they have come up with a low-cost device...”,尤其是其中的关键词researchers,low-cost device等来推断,这篇文章是一篇科研报道。

    1
Waterbuurt is a residential(住宅的) development in Amsterdam, which consists of nearly 100 floating homes on Lake Eimer.
The floating homes are not ordinary houseboats but real floating houses. They only move with the changing tide(朝水). Designed by Dutch architect Marlies Rohmer, the houses have a basic design but are also comfortable. Although Waterbuurt is still a work in progress, there are some of the houses where there are already residents.
Two thirds of the Netherlands’ people live below sea-level, and with the flooding(发洪水) becoming a serious concern, there are many who believe that living on water in the European country is much safer than living on land. The prices of land homes in large city centers like Amsterdam has risen in recent years. But water is not that expensive.
“Moreover, houses in the cities have to stay there for 50 or 70 years,” Dutch architect Koen Olthuis said. “And as cities change, the only choice is to demolish these houses and build new ones. But floating buildings can be moved and adapted.”
The floating homes are built atop underwater platforms, and consists of a light steel frame(钢架) and wooden walls and paneling(嵌板). The bedrooms and bathroom are located on the lower floor, which is partially flooded. The kitchen and dining room are located on the raised ground floor, while the main living area and the outdoor terrace are on the top level.
All floating homes are designed with a lot of extras that buyers can choose, like floating terraces, a second entry, or a boardwalk around the house.
Waterbuurt is set to become the largest water settlement in the history of the Netherlands. Apart from floating houses, it will include floating parks and even floating high buildings. It is sure to meet even the most difficult buyers and win more acceptance from local people.
    1. What can we infer about the floating houses?
    A. They are easy to take down. B. They are free from flooding.
    C. The prices are slightly lower. D. The total completion is done.
    2. What does the underlined word “demolish” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
    A. Build. B. Buy.
    C. Design. D. Destroy.
    3. What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?
    A. The structure of floating houses.
    B. Preferable construction materials.
    C. Unique functions of floating houses.
    D. Advantages of buying floating houses.
    4. What is the best title for the text?
    A. The Development of Amsterdam’s Floating Houses
    B. Waterbuurt — Amsterdam’s Floating Neighborhood
    C. Reasons for Choosing to Live in the Floating Houses
    D. Waterbuurt — an Especially Successful Floating Project
C 2. D 3. A 4. B
根据文章第三段“The prices of land homes in large city centers like Amsterdam has risen in recent years. But water is not that expensive.(近年来,像阿姆斯特丹这样的大城市中心的地价已经上涨。但是水并不是那么贵)”可知,阿姆斯特丹的地价很贵,但水上的价格很便宜。由此推知,在水上修建住宅价格会便宜一些。故选C。
    2. 词义猜测题。根据所猜词后的并列结构“build new ones(修建新的房屋)”可知,只有拆除旧房屋然后才可以建造新房屋。由此可知,所猜词的意思为“拆除、摧毁”。故选D。
    3. 段落大意题。根据文章第五段“The floating homes are built atop underwater platforms, and consists of a light steel frame and wooden walls and paneling. The bedrooms and bathroom are located on the lower floor, which is partially flooded. The kitchen and dining room are located on the raised ground floor, while the main living area and the outdoor terrace are on the top level. (漂浮房屋建在水下平台上,由轻钢框架、木墙和镶板组成。卧室和浴室位于较低的楼层,部分被淹。厨房和餐厅位于凸起的地面层,而主要的起居区域和室外露台在顶层)”可知,本段主要从漂浮房屋修建的位置、修建材料以及漂浮房屋的构成等方面来介绍了漂浮房屋的结构。故选A。
根据文章第一段“Waterbuurt is a residential development in Amsterdam, which consists of nearly 100 floating homes on Lake Eimer.(Waterburt是阿姆斯特丹的一个住宅开发项目,由艾默湖上近100座漂浮住宅组成)”可知,本文主要介绍了阿姆斯特丹的一个水上漂浮住宅区。故选B。

Originally called Santa Fe, the town of Santa Claus, Indiana, selected its new name in the 1850s. The United States Postal Service refused to set a post office there because another town in Indiana had the same name, which inspired the town people to change the name of the town to Santa Claus.
In the early 1940s, industrialist Louis J. Koch bought 260 acres of land there to create the world's first theme park as a retirement project. He was troubled that the tiny hamlet of Santa Claus was visited by children who would be disappointed when they discovered Santa was not there. Then Santa Claus Land opened in 1946. offering a toy shop, toy displays, a restaurant, themed rides designed just for children, and, of course, daily appearances of Santa himself.
The history of the park is the story of a family which has, for seven decades, dedicated itself to providing millions of guests with good, old-fashioned family fun. Over the decades, Santa Claus Land flourished. Children from across the country came to sit on the real Santa's knee and whisper their Christmas wishes. Guests included Ronald Reagan, who stopped by in 1955.
As the park grew, the Koch family knew Christmas was not the only theme possibility for the park. In 1984, Santa Claus Land expanded to also include Halloween and 4th of July sections, and the park's name was changed to a more appropriate one, Holiday World. In 1993, Splashin' Safari Water Park was added. In 2006, the park introduced a new holiday. The Thanksgiving section included a recording-breaking new wooden coaster, The Voyage, which helped increase the park's seasonal attendance past the one-million mark for the first time. In 2013, TIME magazine named The Voyage the nation's best wooden roller coaster.
Throughout its history, Holiday World has set high standards for the theme park industry, with a steadfast adherence to the values established in the family.
    5. Why did a post office fail to be set in Santa Fe?
    A. To keep Santa Fe quiet. B. To save money for the town.
    C. To force the town to change its name. D. To prevent people sending letters to a wrong address.
    6. Which word can replace the word "hamlet" in Para.2?
    A. play B. park C. village D. post office
    7. According to the text, what do we know about Holiday World?
    A. It is a state business. B. It is popular with children.
    C. It has changed little since its foundation. D. It is mainly for celebrating holidays.
    8. What is the best title for the text?
    A. A theme park about Santa in America B. The records of Holiday World
    C. How has Holiday World developed? D. Why do people love to visit Holiday World?
D 6. C 7. D 8. C
根据第一段中“The United States Postal Service refused to set a post office there because another town in Indiana had the same name, which inspired the town people to change the name of the town to Santa Claus. (美国邮政管理局拒绝在那里设立邮局,因为印第安纳州的另一个小镇也有同样的名字,这促使小镇的人们把小镇的名字改为Santa Claus)”可推知,没有在圣达菲设立邮局是为了防止人们把信寄错地址。故选D。
    6. 词义猜测题。根据画线词后文“of Santa Claus was visited by children who would be disappointed when they discovered Santa was not there”可知,Louis J. Koch担心孩子们会来参观这个名叫“圣诞老人”的小村庄,结果却发现那里并没有圣诞老人,而感到失望。 A. play戏剧;B. park公园;C. village村庄;D. post office邮局。故选C。
根据倒数第二段中“As the park grew, the Koch family knew Christmas was not the only theme possibility for the park. In 1984, Santa Claus Land expanded to also include Halloween and 4th of July sections, and the park's name was changed to a more appropriate one, Holiday World. (随着公园的发展,Koch家族知道圣诞节并不是公园唯一的主题。1984年,圣诞老人乐园扩展到万圣节且在7月4日,公园的名字被改成了一个更合适的名字——假日世界)”以及“The Thanksgiving section included a recording-breaking new wooden coaster, The Voyage, which helped increase the park's seasonal attendance past the one-million mark for the first time.(感恩节部分包括一个打破纪录的新型木制过山车“航行”,这帮助公园的季节性游客首次超过100万人次)”可知,假日世界主要用于庆祝节日。故选D。
根据最后一段“Throughout its history, Holiday World has set high standards for the theme park industry, with a steadfast adherence to the values established in the family. (纵观其历史,假日世界为主题公园行业设定了高标准,并坚持在家庭中建立的价值观)”结合文章主要介绍了主题公园“假日世界”的发展历史,以及这个主题公园的一些特色和理念。可知,C选项“假日世界是如何发展起来的?”最符合文章标题。故选C。

The rumor proved all too bitterly true: Park’s hardware, a downtown institution of Orono for over 100 years, would be closing. Locals cross-examined, and begged Lin, the owner of the store, but it seemed useless. Running a small, local, family-owned hardware business was no longer profit maker. The town’s love for Park’s Hardware was just not enough to allow it to compete against the giant warehouse stores.
I was one member of the excited masses that began to walk through Park’s as, day by day, the lettering on the front window changed from “20% OFF EVERYTHING” to “30%,” “40%,” and on and on, until the only things left were the light sockets and doorknobs.
Compared with giant warehouses, a hardware store is special. I recall the time I was exploring in one giant warehouse for a wireless doorbell that Park’s didn’t carry. I found the thing, but didn’t understand the following note on the package: “Red light indicates condition of the battery.” “Excuse me,” I said to a clerk, holding the item out, “I can’t seem to find the red light.” The man examined it, and said, “Neither can I.” I compared this experience with one I usually had at Park’s. “Lin,” I’d beg. “Can you…please…I don’t know…do you think…?” And quicker than one could say, “little red light,” Lin would spring into action and together we’d sit down to find the solution.
I could buy a single screw at Park’s. At a warehouse I have no choice but to buy a box of a hundred screws. But I don’t want a box of a hundred screws when all I need is one. I just want to know the location of the little red light, and now that Park’s is gone, I realize that I never will.
    9. Why did Park’s decide to stop its business?
    A. The owner invested in other business B. The owner couldn’t make enough money
    C. Its location was not convenient for shopping D. It couldn’t win enough love from the locals
    10. What did Park’s do before closing?
    A. It had a closing down sale B. It looked for a new owner
    C. It struggled for its reorganization D. It distributed its goods to regulars
    11. What does the writer’s experience in Paragraph3 suggest?
    A. The good service of Park’s B. The benefit of having more choices
    C. The pressure of competition for Park’s D. The responsible working attitude of large stores
    12. How did the writer feel about the closing-down of Park’s?
    A. Supportive B. Sorry C. Surprised D. Uninterested

B 10. A 11. A 12. B
根据第一段中“Running a small, local, family-owned hardware business was no longer profit maker. The town’s love for Park’s Hardware was just not enough to allow it to compete against the giant warehouse stores.(经营一家小型的本地家族五金企业已不再有利可图。小镇对Park’s Hardware的喜爱还不足以让它与大型仓储商店竞争)”可知,Park’s决定停止经营是因为老板赚不到足够的钱。故选B。
    10. 细节理解题。根据第二段“I was one member of the excited masses that began to walk through Park’s as, day by day, the lettering on the front window changed from “20% OFF EVERYTHING” to “30%,” “40%,” and on and on, until the only things left were the light sockets and doorknobs.(我是一群兴奋的人中的一员,开始走进Park’s,一天又一天,前窗上的字从“一切八折”变成了“打折30%”、“打折40%”等等,直到只剩下电灯插座和门把手)”可知,Park’s在关门前有一场关门大甩卖。故选A。
根据第三段“Compared with giant warehouses, a hardware store is special. 故选A。
根据最后一段“I could buy a single screw at Park’s. At a warehouse I have no choice but to buy a box of a hundred screws. But I don’t want a box of a hundred screws when all I need is one. I just want to know the location of the little red light, and now that Park’s is gone, I realize that I never will.(我可以在Park’s买一颗螺丝钉。在仓储商店里,我别无选择,只能买一盒100颗的螺丝钉。但我不想要一盒一百个螺丝,我只需要一个。我只是想知道那个小红灯的位置,现在Park’s不见了,我意识到我永远也不可能知道了)”可推知,作者对Park 's的关闭感到遗憾。故选B。

There are many famous museums throughout the world where people can enjoy art. Washington D. C. has the National Gallery of Art (美术馆); Paris has the Louvre; London, the British Museum. Florida International University (FIU) in Miami also shows art for people to see. And it does so without a building, or even a wall for its drawings and paintings.
FIU has opened what it says is the first computer art museum in the United States. You don’t have to visit the University to see the art. You just need a computer linked to a telephone.
You can call the telephone number of a University computer and connect your own computer to it. All of the art is stored in the school computer. It is computer art, produced electronically (采用电子手段) by artists in their own computers. In only a few minutes, your computer can receive and copy all the pictures and drawings.
Robert Shostak is director of the new computer museum. He says he started the museum because computer artists had no place to show their work.
A computer artist could only record his pictures electronically and send the records, or floppy discs (软盘), to others to see on their computers. He could also put his pictures on paper. But to print good pictures in paper, the computer artist needed an expensive laser (激光) printer.
Robert Shostak says the electronic museum is mostly for art or computer students at schools and universities. Many of the pictures in the museum are made by students. Mr. Shostak says the FIU museum will make computer art more fun for computer artists because more people can see it. He says artists will enjoy their work much more if they have an audience. And the great number of home computers in America could mean a huge audience for the electronic museum.
    13. To see the art in FIU museum, your special needs include___________.
    A. floppy discs
    B. a computer and a printer
    C. pictures and drawings on paper
    D. a computer connected to the museum by telephone line
    14. What are stored in this museum?
    A. Paintings drawn by means of computer. B. Different styles of paintings.
    C. Drawings done by art students of FIU. D. Old paintings
    15. The museum was started when____________.
    A. Robert Shostak wanted to do something for computer scientists
    B. Robert Shostak wanted to help computer artists
    C. art students needed a place to show their works
    D. computer scientists wanted to do something about art
    16. The main purpose of this text is to give information about____________.
    A. famous museums through the world
    B. a computer art museum in Miami, U.S.A. C. art exhibitions in Florida International University
    D. the latest development in computer art

D 14. A 15. B 16. B
根据第二段“You don’t have to visit the University to see the art. You just need a computer linked to a telephone.(你不需要到大学去看艺术。你只需要一台连接电话的电脑)”以及第三段第一句和最后一句“You can call the telephone number of a University computer and connect your own computer to it. In only a few minutes, your computer can receive and copy all the pictures and drawings.(你可以拨打大学计算机的电话号码,把你自己的计算机连接到它上。只需几分钟,你的电脑就可以接收和复制所有的图片和图纸)”可知,为了能够看到FIU博物馆的艺术品,我们特别需要的是通过电话线链接博物馆的电脑。故选D项。
    14. 推理判断题。根据第三段“All of the art is stored in the school computer. It is computer art, produced electronically by artists in their own computers.(所有的艺术品都储存在学校的电脑里。这是电脑艺术,艺术家们用自己的电脑制作出电子作品)”可知,艺术家用电脑创作的绘画被收藏在这家博物馆。故选A项。
根据第四段“Robert Shostak is director of the new computer museum. He says he started the museum because computer artists had no place to show their work.(罗伯特·肖斯塔克是新成立的计算机博物馆的馆长。他说他创办这个博物馆是因为电脑艺术家们没有地方展示他们的作品)”可知,博物馆的成立是因为Robert Shostak想帮助电脑艺术家,让他们有地方展示他们的作品。故选B项。
    16. 推理判断题。根据第一段“Florida International University (FIU) in Miami also shows art for people to see. And it does so without a building, or even a wall for its drawings and paintings.(迈阿密的佛罗里达国际大学也为人们展示艺术。而且它没有建筑,甚至没有墙壁来存放绘画)”以及后文介绍了博物馆如何展示艺术品和成立博物馆的目的。由此可知,文章的主要目的是向读者提供美国迈阿密的一个电脑艺术博物馆的信息。故选B项。

What's the attraction of coffee shops? It's been said that JK Rowling wrote the Harry Potter books sitting in one in Edinburgh.
Many people spend hours in these places nursing a coffee as they work away on their laptops. But if you're spending all day buying one expensive coffee after another and haven't sold your first novel yet, the costs can really add up.
For those who work outside of a traditional office or just want to take time out, there's a new alternative in London: a pay-per-minute café. You can continue to stay for as long as you like in the Ziferblat coffee shop. You'll be given a clock when you come in to keep time. When you leave, you return the item and pay the bill. The cost of hanging out, eating, working and meeting new people in the place is 3p per minute-or £1.80 an hour. The shop's owner, Ivan Meetin, says, "Everything is free, except the time you spend there".
Customers help themselves to coffee and cookies. They can also bring their own food to eat there while surfing the internet through wi-fi. Meetin's customers clearly are not the types who rush to work with a paper cup to drink from at their desks. They are there for the atmosphere. He's always loved the idea of building his own house. "With my mates, we were building treehouses where rules of society didn't exist," he says.
Meetin believes his coffee shop is a bit like "social media", but with a face. Like-minded people go there to socialize. Some feel so much at home that they wash the dishes.
The concept of coffee shops, where you pay for the time and not for the cup, has proved popular in Russia. Ziferblat is part of a Russian chain. Only time will tell if the British will warm to the idea.
I'd like to try it at least once. Who knows— I might even start writing my own novel. If coffee shops are good enough for JK Rowling to spend quality time in, why can't I?
    17. How are coffee shops similar to social media?
    A. People spend hours there at a time.
    B. People go there for the atmosphere.
    C. People bring their own food to eat there.
    D. People go to meet others who share their interests.
    18. What is the main idea of the passage?
    A. J.K. Rowling writes her books in a café.
    B. You can complete a lot of work in a café.
    C. More and more money is being spent in cafés.
    D. A new coffee shop charges people by the minute.
    19. Which of the following words could best describe Ziferblat?
    A. Creative. B. Common. C. Traditional. D. Magical.
D 18. D 19. A
根据第八段“Meetin believes his coffee shop is a bit like "social media", but with a face. Like-minded people go there to socialize.”(Meetin相信他的咖啡馆有点像有人存在的社交媒体。
根据第二段“or those who work outside of a traditional office or just want to take time out, there's a new alternative in London: a pay-per-minute café.” 根据第三段“there's a new alternative in London: a pay-per-minute café.”(在伦敦有一个新式的咖啡馆,按分钟收费)及"Everything is free, except the time you spend there"(一切都免费,除了你在这所花费的时间。)

    20. 根据上文“As Chinese new Year approaches, many people go on house cleaning.(随着中国新年的临近,许多人开始打扫房子)”以及后文“In other words, get rid of things that take up space but aren’t used often or at all. If you are interested in tidying up for Chinese New Year, here are a few tips that might help you.(换句话说,就是扔掉那些占用空间但不常使用或根本不用的东西。如果你有兴趣为中国新年打扫卫生,这里有一些建议可能会对你有所帮助)”可知,上文提到中国新年打扫房子的习俗,后文则提到扔掉那些占用空间但不常使用或根本不用的东西,可推知本句属于过渡句,承接上文进一步说明清理的定义。D选项中the cleaning process对应上文中cleaning。故D选项“清理过程的一部分是清除杂乱”符合语境,故选D。
    21. 根据上文“Decluttering is important but lacks urgency, so it’s easy to keep putting it off.(清理工作很重要,但缺乏紧迫感,所以很容易被拖延)”以及后文“Make sure your family is free during this time, too, since some of the things are probably theirs. Then take an hour or two or maybe even a whole day to declutter.(确保你的家人在这段时间也有空,因为有些东西可能是他们的。然后花一两个小时甚至一整天来整理)”可知,上文提到清理工作容易被拖延,后文则提到确保家人在这段时间也有空,可推知本句是在针对上文清理工作容易被拖延的情况提出建议:当你有几个小时空闲的时候,安排一个时间来做这件事,且F选项中Schedule a time对应后文this time。故F选项“当你有几个小时空闲的时候,安排一个时间来做这件事”符合语境,故选F。
    22. 根据上文“Be prepared with a place to put items for disposal.(准备一个地方来放置要处理的物品)”以及后文“You may want separate containers for items you want to throw away, those you plan to donate and those you want to sell. Thus four boxes are needed: a box for things you’ll keep, a box for things you’ll store, one for things you’ll donate or sell, and the last one for things you’ll throw out.(你可能想要用不同的容器来装你想扔掉的东西、你打算捐赠的东西和你想卖掉的东西。因此,我们需要四个盒子:一个用来存放东西,一个用来储存东西,一个用来捐赠或出售东西,最后一个用来扔掉东西)”可知,上文提到了要处理的物品,可推知,本句承接上文举例说明要处理的物品可以是哪些东西,故E选项“它可能是一个垃圾袋,一个盒子或一个塑料容器”符合语境,故选E。
    23. 根据后文“Sorting through your things is the hard part. Now, you just have to throw out all of the trash and put all of the items you want to keep back where they belong, and make sure to have a great organizational system that will keep them neatly in place.(整理你的东西是困难的部分。现在,你只需要把所有的垃圾扔掉,把所有你想要的东西放回它们该放的地方,并确保有一个良好的组织系统,使它们保持整齐)”可知,本段主要是关于整理个人空间的建议,A选项中Reorganize对应后文中have a great organizational system。故A选项“整理你的空间”符合语境,故选A。
    24. 根据上文“Make time for weekly and daily decluttering.(每周和每天都腾出时间清理)”以及后文“Now that your home looks nice, you have to make an effort for it to stay that way by making time to keep your space organized every day and at the end of every week.(现在你的家看起来很漂亮,你必须努力让它保持这样的状态,每天和周末花时间保持你的空间有条理)”可知,后文提到必须努力让家保持这样的状态,说明清理并不能保证家一直就这么整洁,清理只是成功的一半。
