Over a hundred years ag in 1911,smething strange was fund in the glaciers f Antarctica.Grilffith Taylr—an Australian gelgist,had discvered a bld red stream puring ut f the ice cascades (瀑布) f Taylr Glacier!Ppularly knwn as the Bld Falls,scientists had nt been able t find the reasn behind the bld red liquid flwing thrugh the ice—until recently.The mystery f the Bld Falls had finally been slved.
When these falls were first discvered,scientists had believed that the red clur came frm a large amunt f red algae (海藻) cncentrated in the water.Red algae cntain a pigment (色素) which reflects red light,making the algae appear red.
This thery made sense,until it was later fund that algae d nt play a part in the red clr f the flwing liquid at all.What really causes Taylr Glacier’s waters appear bld red,is the presence f irn xide in the liquid.The waters f the bld falls are rich in salt and irn cntent,and when this water cmes in cntact with the air,it turns red—just like rust!The water in these falls is ften referred t as “brine” by scientists because f the high salt cntent in the water.

Researchers at the University f Clrad and University f Alaska fund that inside the glacier,there was a netwrk f channels and reservirs that mve the water arund.Salt water has a lwer freezing temperature.In additin,when any substance underges a change in state,it gives ff heat.Therefre,the brine actually warms itself up while it’s freezing!Hw this wrks,is that when the brine is flwing thrugh the Taylr Glacier,sme f it des freeze.As a result f changing state frm liquid t ice,the brine gives ff heat.This heat is enugh t keep the rest f the brine in liquid frm,which is why it flws ut f the glacier.
