Spending as little as $5 a day n smene else culd significantly bring yu happiness, the team at the University f British Clumbia and Harvard Business Schl fund.
Their experiments n mre than 630 Americans shwed they were measurably (显著地) happier when they spent mney n thers—even if they thught spending the mney n themselves wuld make them happier.
“We wanted t test ur thery that hw peple spend their mney is at least as imprtant as hw much mney they earn, ” said Elizabeth Dunn, a psychlgist at the University f British Clumbia.
They asked their 600 vlunteers first t rate their general happiness, reprt their annual incme and detail their mnthly spending including bills, gifts fr themselves, gifts fr thers and dnatins t charity.
“Regardless f hw much incme each persn made, thse wh spent mney n thers reprted greater happiness, while thse wh spent mre n themselves did nt, ” Dunn said in a statement.
Dunn’s team als surveyed 16 emplyees at a cmpany in Bstn befre and after they received an annual prfit-sharing bnus f between $3, 000 and $8, 000.
“Emplyees wh devted mre f their bnus t pr-scial (有益社会的) spending experienced greater happiness after receiving the bnus, and the manner in which they spent that bnus was a mre imprtant predictr f their happiness than the size f the bnus itself, ” they wrte in their reprt, published in the jurnal Science.
