    A week later, it was time fr anther swim meet. Like befre, Mike decided t enjy his favrite flavred ice cream befre they left hme. As Mike climbed ut the pl, his teammates patted (拍) him n the back. He’d taken first place again in his race.
    As it turned ut, Mike decided t have sme chclate ice cream befre every ne f the next few swim meets that came up. He began t think f it as his lucky charm. After several mnths f being placed in the tp psitins f every race he swam, Mike was feeling unbeatable. And he wuldn’t admit it, but he was als starting t feel a little uncmfrtable. All that ice cream was adding a few punds t his athletic swimmer’s build.
    It didn't take lng after that fr Mike t start cming in secnd place---and then third and then last place in his races. The lucky chclate ice cream had lst its magic. On the day f his next swim meet, his mther sat dwn at the table with him. “Mike, I think we need t talk abut this. We all lve ice cream, but it’s gt lts f fat and sugar in it, and it’s nt healthy fr yur bdy t eat s much f it.” Mike unwillingly agreed. His father ffered t g running with him few days a week t help strengthen his muscles. The extra weight sn disappeared, and Mike fund himself breathing easier at swim.
    It was the last meet f the seasn, and Mike wasn’t sure what t expect. He felt healthy again, but he didn’t knw if he still had any speed in the pl.

    Once we gt clser, we discvered the waves had pulled a by and a girl frm the pl and int the pen sea. I knew that the nearest bat wuld take at least 30 minutes t reach us. Waiting fr help wasn't a chice. I wasn't used t this srt f emergency--I’d never been trained as a lifeguard-but I didn't think twice abut trying t save them. I suppsed in a way I wanted t impress everyne: at 19, a deal like that can seem like a gd pprtunity t shw ff.
    Mises and I dived int the water and it tk us 10 minutes t get t them. When we finally reached them, they were almst lifeless with nly their heads cming in and ut f the water. We culd tell they were still alive frm their small breaths but it was clear they wuldn't have been able t stay there much lnger. I held the by and pulled him ver my bard. Mises mved the girl nt his bard. We discussed pushing them back t the shre, but we were t far ut.

    Shirley Danes yelled, “Jdie’s daddy is a garbage man!”
    Everybdy in the class laughed ut lud. Everybdy except Jdie, that is. She felt her face turn bright red.
    She lked arund the whle classrm. Everyne was laughing. Sme kids were even hlding their nses.
    Jdie lked at Mr Swales. He was angry. He almst never raised his vice, but nw he did. “Silence! I want everybdy t quiet dwn this instant.”
    The laughter stpped immediately. The sund f cars and peple ging by ut n the street came thrugh the windws. “Yu shuld be ashamed f yurselves,” Mr Swales said. “Being a garbage man... I mean, is a difficult and enrmusly useful jb. We shuld all be grateful t Mr Harris. Where wuld we be withut him? Up t ur ears in garbage, that’s where. Hw wuld yu like that?”
    “It’s nt funny,” Mr Swales went n. “Garbage is a serius matter. I think yu all we Jdie an aplgy. And after that, yu’re all ging t write Jdie’s father, Mr Harris, a nice letter t tell him hw much yu appreciate what he des fr all f us. In ther wrds, keeping ur city clear.”
