    Even when the rugged expanses of the Great Smoky Mountains were bursting with their famous fall colours, they always looked dull black and yellowish to Van Lew from the 3,590­foot­high perch of Mount Harrison. For 20­year­old Van Lew, who has been colour­blind his whole life, some colours have just been left to the imagination. He loves painting, but his wife Molly has to help him pick and mix colours.
    Last week, however, when Van Lew visited the scenic mountaintop again and looked through a special viewfinder, for the first time he saw yellows, oranges and reds exploding across the landscape. “Red is the biggest difference. I mean, I can't describe it,” said Van Lew. “It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in my life. That red, it's just lovely. It's unbelievable.”
    A colour­blind viewfinder which lets people enjoy colours that they may have never seen before was fixed on the top of the Ober Gatlinburg resort(旅游胜地) by the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development last Wednesday. It is one of three in the state. The other two viewfinders are at scenic areas of Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area near Oneida, and at the Westbound Interstate 26 overlook near Erwin in Unicoi County.
    Although the technology isn't new—eyeglasses that let colour­blind people see colours are already available—state officials believe this is the first time it's been included in a viewfinder, at a cost of $2,000 each, to help people with red­green colour­blindness. How clearly the viewfinders show new colours can vary from person to person among the 13 million or so people with colour­blindness in the country.
    State tourism officials invited people to try it out last Thursday at Ober Gatlinburg. They brought them up by ski lift, but left the details somewhat vague to maintain the element of surprise. A camera crew filmed their reactions for marketing material. Their first look drew tears, smiles and astonished faces with wonder and awe. “My heart just started beating fast,” said Todd Heil, who generally saw a lot of green. “I felt like crying, man. Too many people around.”
    For Van Lew, nothing looks the same now. It can be a little discouraging to know what he's been missing, but the possibility of tapping into a long­unseen world of lively colours is uplifting.“It's going to enable more people to experience the beauty that we live in, that I didn't know we lived in,” he said.

    Our society is generally becoming one of giant enterprises directed by a bureaucratic management in which man becomes a small, well­oiled cog in the machinery. The oiling is done with higher wages, well­ventilated factories and piped music, and by psychologists and “human­relations” experts; yet all this oiling does not alter the fact that man has become powerless, that he is bored with it. They are in a highly competitive race. To be promoted or to fall behind is not a matter of salary but even more a matter of self­respect. When they apply for their first job, they are tested for intelligence as well as for the right mixture of obedience and independence. From the moment on they are tested again and again—by the psychologists, for whom testing is a big business, and by their superiors, who judge their behaviour, sociability, capacity to get along, etc. This constant need to prove that one is as good as or better than one's fellow competitor creates constant anxiety and stress, the very causes of unhappiness and illness.
    Am I suggesting that we should return to the preindustrial mode of production or to nineteenth­century “free enterprise” capitalism? Certainly not. Problems are never solved by returning to a stage which one has already outgrown. I suggest transforming our social system from a bureaucratically managed industrialism in which maximal production and consumption are ends in themselves into a humanist industrialism in which man and full development of his potentialities—those of all love and of reason—are the aims of social arrangements. Production and consumption should serve only as means to this end, and should be prevented from ruling man.

    Imagine a future where our streets are filled with ads 200m tall, where billboards change before our eyes to give us personalised messages, and where companies track our every move as we walk through a city, pinging(发送) special offers to our phones as we near their shops.
    In fact, all of these forms of advertising are already being tested. Let's take the first of these ideas. Back in 1982, science fiction movie Blade Runner predicted a futuristic cityscape where giant adverts stretched the full height of skyscrapers. And UK company Lightvert are now doing something very similar, with one crucial difference.
    Instead of making immense physical adverts, their commercials are sent straight into consumers' eyes. They do this by attaching a strip of reflective material onto a building and projecting an image onto it. This image then “bounces” out into the world. When you pass directly in front of the image, you see it. It appears to be huge and hung in mid­air, but others can't see it. Lightvert claims this form of advertising does not stand out and can “unlock” large amounts of “high­value advertising real estate”.
    But__not__everyone__is__sold__on__the__idea__of__living__in__a__world__of__endless__ads. In Moscow, for example, a new form of advertising targeting motorists has split opinion. Drivers approaching a particular digital billboard in the city are shown adverts for a new kind of Jaguar car, but only if they are driving a different make of vehicle. Sensors in the billboard detect what kind of car you are driving, and send you an ad based on that information.
    While this may seem invasive(侵入的), it's actually the safety aspect that has concerned some observers. Researchers in Sweden have shown that digital billboards attract our eyes for longer than other kinds. In fact, they take our attention away for over two seconds, a length of time which has proved to be dangerous on the roads.
    Finally, we have “proximity marketing(邻近营销)”,where shops detect where you are on the high street and send tailored adverts to your phone. Devicescape is one company trialling the use of Wi­Fi as a means of tracking customers. Their technology could work anywhere, whether in a supermarket, a concert hall, or a bus, says Owen Geddes from their marketing team.
